  • Working Away from Home: Annika Karlsson’s Journey of Adaptability and Resilience 🌍 For this second post in our #WomenAtWork campaign, we’re spotlighting Annika Karlsson, a remarkable woman whose journey as a foreigner working in the Philippines exemplifies strength, adaptability, and personal growth. Moving to a new country is never easy, but Annika made the transition with grace and an open heart. She officially moved to Manila in 2018, and while it was a huge adjustment, her previous visits to the Philippines helped her get a taste of the country's warm hospitality. The shift from vacationing to living full-time, however, presented its own challenges – especially the fast-paced rhythm of Manila life. The traffic, the crowds, and the heat were worlds away from the quiet streets of her native Stockholm. What stood out for Annika was how Filipinos' welcoming nature helped her settle in. "Being open-minded and genuinely trying to understand the culture, especially the food culture, went a long way," she says. She has also learned to embrace the local work culture, where relationships are prioritized, a stark contrast to the directness she was used to in Europe. And while karaoke remains an uncharted territory for her, she’s mastered the importance of taking lunch and merienda breaks to build relationships with her Filipino colleagues! 🍽️ As a foreigner, there were definitely hurdles she had to work through. Bureaucratic systems and manual processes, which she found inefficient at first, tested her patience. Then there was the language barrier. While English is widely spoken in the Philippines, understanding Tagalog made her feel more integrated. Annika approached these challenges head-on by staying observant, asking for help, and remaining open to learning. Homesickness was another struggle, but she found solace in building a support network in Manila, including her husband’s family and her own circle of friends. It’s about having two homes, she says, “I’m saying ‘going home’ whether I’m in Stockholm or Manila.” 🏠 Professionally and personally, the experience has been transformative for her. Working in the Philippines has pushed her to step outside her comfort zone, making her more flexible, culturally sensitive, and resourceful. She’s also become inspired by the resilience of the Filipino people, learning to appreciate life more deeply. But perhaps the most life-changing part of her journey has been meeting her husband. “By now, I’ve built my own family here,” she shares, “which strengthened my feeling of belongingness.” We are so proud to have Annika as part of our team and to celebrate her journey of growth and discovery. Her story is a beautiful reminder that when we embrace change and remain open to new experiences, we grow in ways we never imagined. 🌱
