In the latest findings released by the Global Hunger Index (GHI), Pakistan's standing paints a sobering picture. The nation ranked 102nd among 125 countries surveyed, shedding light on a concerning reality. Shockingly, 37.6% of children under the age of five are grappling with stunted growth, indicative of severe malnutrition plaguing the younger generation. Furthermore, a staggering 18.5% of the population battles daily against undernourishment, highlighting the widespread nature of the crisis. Delving deeper into the statistics, it becomes evident that the plight of Pakistan's children is particularly dire. A troubling 7.1% of youngsters under the age of five suffer from low weight due to malnutrition, signalling a desperate need for intervention. Tragically, the consequences of this crisis extend beyond mere statistics, with 6.1% of children succumbing to premature death before reaching their fifth birthday, largely due to malnutrition or inhospitable living conditions. By 2025, half of the world's inhabitants could reside in regions confronting water scarcity. The impact of this crisis is particularly harsh on women and children, who bear the brunt of inadequate access to clean water. Projections suggest that by 2040, approximately one in four children worldwide will reside in areas facing extreme water stress. Compounding this issue, a staggering 70% of freshwater is currently utilized for agricultural purposes, with 40% wasted or over-irrigated due to inadequate infrastructure for efficient water management. We must prioritize water conservation efforts to safeguard our existence on this planet, as water scarcity directly threatens human life and the delicate balance of Earth's ecosystems. Furthermore, the consequences of water scarcity extend beyond individual regions, potentially triggering mass migrations from water-scarce areas to regions with abundant freshwater resources.
