Gdansk's Doki Living by Euro Styl is committed to preserving the historic heritage of the area in which it was built. Among the modern blocks, there is the Montownia building. The history of this space dates back to the 1930s. During the Second World War it housed an assembly plant for submarine (U-Boot) parts, and during the communist period it served as the main warehouse of the Gdansk Shipyard. Now it has been given another life. It features authentic elements incorporated into the new interior. The original, historic structure has been preserved. The interior has been restored, including the pre-war tracks, cobblestones, three cranes and the entrance door. There is also a History Point on one of the floors - accompanied by image neon signs, which, together with interactive QR codes, expand the knowledge of the building and its history. The upper floors of the MONTOWNIA Lofts & Experience Gdańsk | MORE THAN A HOTEL, while the ground floor is occupied by a Food Hall Montownia. The new face draws on the old tradition of the shipyard canteen and community centre - modernising it, combining it with entertainment and a Gdansk atmosphere. The design of the interior architecture is based primarily on references to the historical heritage; modern interventions are minimal. Euro Styl invited renowned specialists to cooperate: Rayss Group and Studio Degutis. The signage system was treated in a similar way - both the graphic layer and the design of the information carriers are minimalist and blend in with the overall arrangement. Due to its elegant yet industrial character, the typeface Archia by Atipo Foundry was chosen for the project. It is a sans-serif font based on geometric shapes, with interesting ‘technical’ details. It was complemented by a small set of original pictograms. Another part of our work for Euro Styl and their large-scale Dok Living development. This is a new neighbourhood in Gdansk, which is being developed on post-shipyard land, in close proximity to the city centre. The outer area of the Docks is a carefully planned space with historical, shipbuilding heritage and references to it as a leitmotif. In contrast, one of the residential building presented today features common areas that deliberately contrast with the industrial style. The elegant finish in colours of broken white, black and gold is complemented by colourful large-format tiles on the floors and wall sections. The Albra Sans (by ULTRA KUHL) typeface plays a special role in the signage design of this space. It is part of a comprehensive font family with a very wide range of uses. The chosen variation of Sans is characterised by an elegant, interesting details of the individual letters and clear contrasts, which corresponds with the graphic sign of the development. The main material appearing in the wayfinding is aluminium painted in gold colour. Elements of the wayfinding system are inspired by the DOKI logo and complemented by numerous mirrors. The circles in which, for example, floor numbers and directional arrows are framed also refer to the brand's sign. Large-format but elegant graphics have appeared in the underground car park spaces. DOKI Living is an extensive mixed-use Euro Styl development located in the post-shipyard areas, with buildings like former U-Boat Hall, and near the harbour basins of the historic part of Gdansk. Due to its size, the investment was divided into several implementation phases – each of which needed to design a signage system and supporting elements that harmonized with the architecture. In one phase, the theme of the interior architecture and accompanying way finding was historical heritage. Another, on the other hand, features common areas that deliberately contrast with the industrial style. The entire development, on the other hand, is united by the outdoor area. And it is what we want to present today! The style of its signage makes direct reference to the industrial heritage of the area. The design of the information carriers appearing in this space was preceded by an in-depth analysis of historical materials. It was important to look for details alluding to the shipbuilding industry. Therefore, in addition to references in the layer of finishing materials, we decided to choose the typeface TT Tricks TypeType Foundry. It has numerous stencil variations, which is reminiscent of the stencil writing present in factory spaces. The graphic line of the visual information system also includes personalised, proprietary pictograms. NEW WAYFINDING DESIGN! The Katowice-based NOHO Investment project at Nadgórników consists of two modern buildings offering almost three hundred flats. It is a place where art meets design, modernity meets classic, aesthetics meets functionality. NOHO Investment is a nationwide, Polish developer of the premium segment. The buildings created with their participation are places offering the highest quality, functional and timeless in terms of architecture, design and attention to detail. The N14 investment was no different. It is a venue offering, among other things, unique common areas such as: a club room, coworking with a reading room, games room, cinema room, fitness room, sauna and much more. Elegant, toned and detail-focused wayfinding was required for all these structures. Thanks to its fusion with the interior architecture & informative function, it is a perfect extension of the buildings’ design. To match the elegant, yet minimalistic design of the interiors, we decided to choose Radikal font as a basis of our signage project. Radikal by Nootype is a geometric font dedicated to the research of purity. It is characterised by very interesting details. The sharp ends of the letters and the characteristic cut of their ‘bellies’ refer to the shapes present in the architecture of both buildings. The system uses them in a very interesting three-dimensional form (some of them are high-quality 3D prints). An extensive system of pictograms was also created based on Radikal’s glyphs. Thanks to this approach, the icons are proportional and consistent with the rest of the wayfinding system. Saudi Arabia project once again! 🇸🇦 The Jeddah International Book Fair is the second biggest international book fair in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after the Riyadh International Book Fair. It offers a rich and varied program, allowing visitors to explore a world of cultures and civilizations and to discover the latest literary works from 1,000 publishing houses representing 22 countries. The fair, organized by the Saudi Authority for Literature, Publishing, and Translation @mocsaudi have been held at the Jeddah Superdome & had run from Dec.12 until Dec. 21 of 2024. It featured a cultural program with more than 100 activities, including lectures, workshops and seminars led by more than 170 experts from various fields. This year it concluded with remarkable success, attracting more than 580,000 visitors! All of them were able to use carefully prepared wayfinding system, that was designed in our studio. As previously, we prepared wayfinding strategy, designed visual style, create unique pictograms, custom maps & information and dozens directional carriers for all the fair’s facilities. The characteristics and style prepared for this event were an extension of our previous concepts for this client. This gave all events under the International Book Fair (Medina, Riyhad & Jeddah) brand a consistent visual identity. We started New Year with VERY cultural wayfinding implementation! The building of the Municipal Cultural Centre in the Witosa district in Katowice is a new Katowice City - live, work & invest investment. It aims to increase the cultural and recreational offer in this part of the city and it is a response to the needs of the residents of this large housing estate. According to the plans, it will serve as a venue for various events and activities for the residents of Katowice. The building will be equipped with a multifunctional hall with a film/sound director’s room and technical facilities, making it possible to hold professional concerts and performances. The centrepiece of the hall will be a stage with a piano and an auditorium for 200 seats. In addition, the Municipal Cultural Centre will also have rooms for art workshops, ceramics, instrument lessons, dance and movement classes. Senior citizens’ club meetings and exhibitions are also planned for the facility. The task for the wayfinding system we developed is above all to label all these functionalities and areas of the building - clearly, legibly and adapted to the needs of many users. The system is also suitable for use by visually impaired people. Our aim was also to propose a signage to give character to the minimalist spaces of the building. It is based on a limited colour palette, which contrasts perfectly with the wood finishes. We have chosen the typeface Fason to write key information. It is a sans-serif typeface with an interesting character, designed by the Polish type designers from Laïc: Type Foundry (Maciej Połczyński). It is complemented by an original set of pictograms and characteristic ‘spatial’ numbers and arrows. An additional element are the rhythmic patterns appearing in some spaces. What do you think? Two days ago, Bartek Witański returned from Taiwan, where, in addition to attending the Golden Pin Design Award gala, he took part in 台灣設計週 Taiwan Design Week, where he talked about designing wayfinding systems. In addition, he also had a lecture at National Taiwan Normal University, where he shared his in-depth knowledge with the students.
