Return… On my way back from Luxembourg to the Netherlands, while the train crosses the Belgian Ardennes, reflecting on the political discussions in yesterday’s JHA council. I consider it to be an important part of my job to understand the ambitions voiced by ministers in the council. Although perhaps still in a very early stage, it guides the development of the agency. It very often triggers innovation both in operational concepts and in the use of technical means. Yesterday there was a lot of emphasis on return operations. That makes sense: effective migration management is not just about securing borders. Returns are a vital part of this process, ensuring that individuals who have exhausted legal options can be safely and humanely returned. While it’s true that returns are often complex and don’t always proceed smoothly, they are essential for maintaining a credible and functioning migration system. To make returns more effective, we need close coordination at every level. That’s why we’re actively working with the Member States, EU Return Coordinator and European Commission to coordinate our efforts. We are working not just within Europe but also with third countries to establish trust and build lasting partnerships that facilitate successful returns. No cooperation, no return - it’s as simple as that. The involvement of our return specialists helps Member States engage with third countries diplomatically, securing the necessary documentation for safe returns. It’s about using every tool at our disposal to ensure returns are not only efficient but respectful of individuals’ rights and dignity. In the long run, improving the returns process is about reinforcing the credibility of Europe’s migration policy. By demonstrating that we can manage migration flows responsibly, we uphold the principles of security, fairness, and respect of fundamental rights.

Big changes ahead! 🌱 Frontex has hosted a crucial meeting with experts from EU countries, the European Commission, and other key EU bodies to discuss the next steps in developing the False and Authentic Documents Online (FADO) system. This move is part of Frontex's broader effort to take over the administration and management of the platform.   🔎 FADO is an essential tool for verifying identity documents and detecting fraud across the EU’s external borders. As false documents are increasingly used in criminal activities, improving FADO will enhance security and the efficiency of border checks across Europe.   Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gjh3DvMY

⭐ Regardless of where you are in the world, the marks of doing a good job are the same: being open and responsive, and wanting to have a dialogue with other people. That is the conviction and experience of Tony – a Frontex officer and group leader from Sweden 🇸🇪 🤝 “I want to share as much information as I can with my group. When everyone gets a better picture of the situation and feels both well informed and listened to, they show a greater commitment and a willingness to contribute. Together, we can achieve more than what each of us can do individually.” Tony is working as a group leader in Frontex operation Italy. He is responsible for carrying out operational activities in the field together with his team. They support the Italian authorities in migration management in Trapani, northwestern Sicily. This summer has been less busy compared to the previous because of lower migration flow on the Central Mediterranean migratory route. Migrants are transferred to Trapani from the islands of Lampedusa and Pantelleria. There are also NGO disembarkations at the port of Trapani and autonomous landings on the islands and in the coastal area surrounding Trapani. This is Tony's first mission with Frontex. Before that, he has done several UN missions in Sudan and South Sudan. 💡 "I enjoy working internationally. It is very informative to experience the migration situation on the spot here in Italy. I'm learning how my colleagues deal with different issues in their countries and also get the opportunity to share the knowledge we have in Sweden", says Tony. Executive director Frontex (European Border and Coast Guard Agency)

Leadership at Frontex I am not really a believer in any specific leadership theory. I have seen dozens come and go. For me leadership cannot be caught in a model. Of course it might help someone to analyse or understand their leadership. But leadership in practice is, in my opinion, far too complex to be brought back to 2 or 3 dimensions. I firmly believe that the core of leadership derives from the source of one’s leadership. The why. So the most important question I ask myself and the leaders in my organization is, ‘Why do you want to lead?’. Sure, to be an effective leader, one must have a clear vision and a genuine purpose. She or he has to have a strong commitment to our mission and our values. In the case of Frontex, this is to protect Europe’s external borders and uphold European values. Leadership is not about holding power; at Frontex it’s about serving society and empowering the people around you to be the best they can be. Empowering others is a core tenet of leadership. I often hear from staff that they want to be challenged and given the opportunity to contribute more. A good leader listens to this call and creates an environment where everyone can showcase their skills and grow. By fostering trust and providing support, we build a team capable of facing any challenge. Last two days Frontex’s leadership met to have an open and fair dialogue on why we need to lead, what we need to lead and how we need to lead. With emphasis on the ‘why’. The days were intense and the conversations we had were certainly not always easy. But without exception, they were very necessary. We left the seminar with a number of action points but even more important: we left with a shared vision of what we expect from each other and what our people can expect from us as leaders.
