The New Problem with Patient Portals 🛠️ In our previous post about technology in healthcare, we have written about the growing trend of patient portal adoption, with both patients and providers increasingly embracing this technology 💪 While we believe that patient portals are a positive development, they sometimes present new challenges – and no, it's not about outdated design or lack of certain features - that's already perfectly described in Thomas Caldera's post 👉 https://lnkd.in/gqu-psmr. The main problem is that more and more patients, especially those with complex conditions, are managing multiple patient portals 🖥️ 🖥️ It's obvious when you think about it. People with diseases that require long-term treatment, see different specialists and undergo tests in different facilities. ❗ As a result, they have to manage more patient portals! Statistics prove it - 59% of cancer patients have more than one portal, compared to 43% of people without cancer. Of course, more specialists means more patient portals, so managing your own medical data becomes a serious problem. Especially since these services are often not connected in any way. This also affects people who want to change their healthcare provider, as transferring data from one system to another can be problematic: 👉 According to @Accenture, up to 30% of people will have changed doctors by 2021 👉 A significant number of Americans (29%) encounter issues when switching doctors due to medical record transfers. This fragmentation creates a significant burden for patients and healthcare providers alike 🏥 🚨 The lack of interoperability between systems means that critical information can be dispersed across multiple platforms, making it difficult to obtain a comprehensive view of a patient's health. As healthcare technology evolves, we must prioritize #interoperability to ensure seamless information sharing and improved patient care. This level of impact demonstrates the technology's potential to enhance customer engagement and drive sales. 💼 Businesses are taking notice and acting accordingly.  👉 Over 60% of retail survey participants plan to increase their investment in AI infrastructure in the coming 18 months. Moreover, a recent PwC study found that 54% of companies have already implemented generative AI in some areas of their operations. Two key trends from #patient portal statistics 📊 #Healthcare is a special kind of service, but still, a service. Patients' expectations of what a healthcare service should look like depend, in a way, on what they are used to as customers of other companies, not necessarily related to health 🤷♂️ Take the patient portal as an example 💻 We recently came across some very interesting #statistics about the use of such services. The following survey was conducted among people who have been diagnosed with cancer. These individuals typically have more frequent contact with medical professionals and are more likely to undergo testing due to their condition. 💡 In the 2017-2018 period, 40% of patients were regular users of the online patient portal. Two years later, by the 2020-2022 period, this figure had risen to 65%, representing a 25-percentage-point increase. Of course, there was a pandemic at the time, and most health services were provided online, but it is safe to assume that even after the regulations were relaxed, the percentage did not decrease significantly. This increase in the use of patient portals is also confirmed by other, more recent studies 📚 For example, this study was conducted by Tebra in January 2024 and was an online survey of 1,358 U.S. adults who had seen a healthcare provider in the past 12 months. Throughout the report, there are a number of valuable tips for healthcare organizations, including the patient portal: 👉 73% of patients surveyed said they had access to a patient portal. 👉 Of those without access, 68% expressed a desire for one. These and other studies highlight two key trends: 💡Patient behaviors are changing – online access to medical records is becoming an expected standard of care. 💡 Healthcare providers are responding – more medical facilities now offer patient portals for accessing medical information. Healthcare leaders still see great potential in AI 🦾 This year's #survey by the Center for Connected Medicine at UPMC, in partnership with KLAS Research, reveals that #healthcare leaders continue to view #AI as the most exciting emerging technology for the industry 🤖 The "Top of Mind for Top Health Systems" report, conducted from March 12-26, 2024, gathered insights from 55 executives and leaders across U.S. hospitals, health systems, and other healthcare organizations. Respondents included C-level executives (60%), directors/managers (33%), and other healthcare leaders. Key highlights from the report: 👉 85% of respondents cited AI as the most exciting #emerging technology for healthcare. 🌟 👉 Generative AI garnered particular interest, with expectations to augment clinical care and decision-making. 💡 👉 AI was named the technology showing the most improvement over the past two years. 📈 #Ambient speech technology, a subset of generative AI, is poised to enhance physician efficiency and combat burnout.🎙️ Leaders actively seek AI use cases that could transform the industry, focusing on areas like clinical care, communications, and predictive models.🔍 The survey also highlighted significant challenges in data management for health systems. 🔗 Many organizations struggle with fragmented data that's not readily accessible in user-friendly formats. This issue is becoming more pressing as healthcare providers aim to implement AI solutions, which require a robust foundation of data aggregation and analytics capabilities. Why implement LLMs in healthcare? 🤔 AI Medical Scribes – tools for creating patient interview notes – are one of the exemplary applications of #LLMs in healthcare. Thanks to such tools, physicians can focus more on conducting the interview, leaving the creation of necessary visit notes to algorithms.⚡ In theory, it all sounds great. But in practice? It's impressive as well ✨ Recently, @Northwestern Medicine expanded the scope of their DAX Copilot application pilot. This #AI-powered tool listens to medical visits and uses AI to create clinical notes. However, it's not just a simple transcription – the tool records everything relevant from a treatment process perspective. What are the pilot's effects so far? 👉 #Physicians using this application reported an increase of 11.3 patients per month 👉 A 24% decrease in time spent on note-taking 👉 A 17% reduction in after-hours work Moreover, physicians using the application reduced their physical documentation by 30%. This serves as another example that artificial intelligence is not a temporary trend, but a genuine aid in combating administrative burden.
