How would you manage scope creep in an agile BI project without compromising deadlines?

Heres a quick breakdown of my Optimizes Visual Analytics Process (OVAP): -Gather requirements. -Iterate on wireframes with the end user and the Manage who can provide sign off. -Irerate on data mapping for said wireframe with a Data SME who can also provide sign off -Get sign off for Wireframes and data mapping -Dev -Internal/peer testing and feedback loop -UAT -implement feedback that is aligned with signed off wireframes and mapping -Move to prod -Transition If something that comes in that is net new and is a large add or more than a couple hours of additional work, you need to tell that person/manager that that will need to be handled in the next phase or you need to restart your process and thus the timeline.

Managing scope creep in an Agile BI project without compromising deadlines is a challenging task and can only be achieved through meticulous planning. Defining scope clearly at the onset of the project is imperative. Also, the stakeholders should understand and agree to it. In my experience of working on BI projects, I have found regular communication with stakeholders about the project updates extremely helpful. In this way scope creep can be identified early and handled swiftly.

Weekly or semi weekly touch points reviewing progress and sometimes showcasing said progress. Keep the OVAP in mind through those conversations. A large part of BI is managing expectations not only with the end-users/client but vertically managing your own leaders expectations.

Within the OVAP we would push these new features to future iterations. If the BI tool is full built out and you are in the middle of a sprint working through a feature it is easy to bump up the net new feature in the backlog. This is normally in the PO however. Again moving outside of the Devs role in a true agile/scrum org. Regardless, Grooming the backlog is pertinent to ensure value is delivered continuously.

Velocity is often how BI devs are are measured as effective workers. In the OVAP it is pertinent that the sign-off has its own ticket assigned to that manager that provides it. If there are kickback, pre-work, scope, change, etc that SHOULD NOT count against the dev. If this happens you are not measuring that actual work being done nor the productivity. If there are continuous iterations, that is part of why the retros exist. To identify and learn from why the work isn't getting done the first time.
