The 1st Symposium on "Bioproduction of Natural Fragrances and Flavours", held today at the Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho, brought together leading #experts in the #bioproduction of natural #compounds to explore the latest developments in this field. The event, organised by #CEB, highlighted the key results of the #ESSEntial Project, which aims to develop an integrated #bioprocess for producing #lactones, valuable compounds used as #fragrances and #flavours, from simple sugars. The round table, under the theme "Biobased Scents: Aligning Academic and Industry Expectations for Progress", provided an enriching opportunity to debate the connection between the #academic world and #industry. “Science for Global Challenges (SCIGLO)”! This is the theme of the European Researchers’ Night, which takes place on 27th September this year and #CEB will again participate. The #event, funded by the European Commission, will be held in Braga, Coimbra, Évora, and Lisbon, aiming to break down the barrier between #science and citizens and demystify the image of the distant scientist. The third edition of “Proteome 2 Gene 2 Protein” is just around the corner, and it will feature a range of dynamic and engaging #workshops! Did you know that some #viruses only infect #bacteria? #Bacteriophages, or "phages," are among Earth's most abundant biological entities and are known for specifically infecting bacteria. Bacteria often organize into #biofilms, highly structured biological communities, in response to survival challenges. At #CEB, our researchers have been exploring the complex interaction between bacteriophages and their bacterial hosts. Our research uses cutting-edge tools such as #omics, synthetic #biology, and #microscopy to identify, characterize, and control pathogenic bacteria through bacteriophages and their derived proteins. This approach opens up new possibilities in combating bacterial #infections, as phages can be used as an effective alternative to antibiotics, especially against resistant bacteria.
