In our last event before the summer, our speakers' insights were enlightening, and their chemistry was absolutely charming. 📍Bernardo Ferreira de Carvalho, the Co-Founder & CEO of Oceano Fresco, showcased how Oceano Fresco is driving the change in the world of aquaculture by growing high-quality bivalve species. Protein demand will double in 30 years, but the most significant protein sources, namely for species at the peak of the trophic scale, are unsustainable. Bivalves as one of the lowest species on the trophic scale has a low footprint and the advantage of blending taste and high nutrition. We can’t wait to see Amêijoas à Bolhão Pato powered by Oceano Fresco. 📍Joana Rosa, researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB, showed us literally the future. Her lab is developing cellular aquaculture to produce protein without killing the oceans. Their multi-award work is building a cost-effective, circular process to produce fish protein at scale without the need for animals. Their research is exceptional and particularly relevant due to its use of microalgae to prevent the need for animal use and make the overall process more efficient. 📍Rui Rodrigues, Partner @ Indico Capital Partners, walked us through the VC perspective. Their Blue Fund is on the leading edge of sustainable capital funding, being one of the most significant worldwide ocean-focused funds. Their investment process mixes traditional VC practices with a strong ESG foundation. If you’re working in this sector and looking for funding, Indico might be a key player in helping you grow. Finally, the 30-second pitches, the closest part of the event to our hearts, were once again full of energy and a strong desire to leverage the community's collective brain. A massive thank you to Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute for hosting us, Climate Circle Lisbon for partnering with us for this special event, and SOGRAPE and MC Food Lab for their invaluable support. See you later in the year!

There was a lot to learn and take away from our last event on Partnering with Big Food to create win-win startup-corporate collaborations. 📍André Soares Campos told us all about how SOGRAPE's innovation department ensures that the company's development strategy and business objectives are aligned. The company has a close relationship with startups and even has its own small venture capital fund for them. With the help of these young specialists, the company can grow and remain relevant without the slow pace of large businesses. 📍Maria Tolentino, the Country Director of Too Good To Go, spoke about various initiatives to reduce food waste. These initiatives concern both businesses and individuals. For example, food expiration dates have been updated. Instead of "expiration date", they now say "best before". They suggest that before discarding a product, one should smell and taste it rather than simply following the label's instructions. 📍Milana Dovzhenko, co-founder of Bairro, walked us through how their tech connects small and large companies to customers, massively simplifying the work and cost for companies looking to sell directly to customers. Her insights on closely managing relationships with large businesses at all stages are critical to ensuring success in those partnerships. Thank you to the speakers for sharing their insights and to the suppliers who shared their beautiful products with everyone. See you on the 4th of July for our last event before the summer.
