INESC Microssistemas e Nanotecnologias (INESC MN) is a private, non-profit Reseach and Development institute created in January, 2002 from the former Solid State Technology group of INESC. INESC MN operates a Class 100/10 cleanroom with optical and e-beam lithography allowing nanoscale device fabrication. INESC MN is dedicated to leading edge research and development in strategic technological areas of micro- and nanotechnologies and the application of these technologies to electronic, biological and biomedical devices. The group’s mission is to provide advanced training to undergraduated, graduated students and researchers at Master, PhD and post-doctoral levels, acting as a bridge between the Technical Engineering School (IST, Lisbon) and industrial partners worldwide. INESC-MN also offers transfer of technology to both Portuguese and international industries through collaborative research, contract research, prototyping and consulting.

We are thrilled to announce that Prof. Marco Piccardo, from INESC Microssistemas e Nanotecnologias and Instituto Superior Técnico, has been awarded the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, securing an incredible 1.5 million euros to launch his groundbreaking project #metaPOWER. Field tests with live fire in a controlled environment were conducted on August 1. Two firefighters wore Safefire prototypes beneath their standard gear during these tests. The aim was to simulate body movements in real-life scenarios of equipment handling and firefighting. Another Internship comes to an end! INESC MN hosted an incredible week-long internship focused on the fascinating world of nanotechnology. Each morning, our dedicated interns dived deep into the nanoscale, engaging in both theoretical and practical learning experiences. On the 9th of July, Instituto Superior Técnico launched #ISTsat1, the first CubeSat developed by a university team in Portugal. The #cleanroom at INESC Microssistemas e Nanotecnologias was chosen for the assembly of this small satellite. In this controlled environment, various tests were conducted to validate its functionality, including the testing of photovoltaic cells, which are essential for ensuring energy collection during its mission.
