We perform interdisciplinary research and deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society.
Sobre nós
Established in 2009, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) is a collaborative research and technology organisation founded by Spain and Portugal. Headquartered in Braga, northern Portugal, INL operates within an international legal framework to conduct interdisciplinary research and implement nanotechnologies for the benefit of society. INL focuses on strategic research areas that deepen our understanding of fundamental phenomena, serving as the basis for the development of innovative technologies. By progressing through the innovation pipeline, these technologies aim to address current global challenges, aligning with the priorities outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Key areas include clean water, clean energy, zero hunger, good health, and overall well-being. The INL community is now about 500 people. INL’s mission is two-fold: to carry out excellent research in nanotechnology, and to engage with society by means of technology transfer and public outreach. This twin approach guides the organisation to navigate the unknown universe of science, and to identify new research areas at the intersection of established knowledge fields. The overarching objective is to advance research anchored in nanotechnology towards new science and novel methodologies, and to devise nanotechnology-based solutions, in the physical and human environments, mediated by cutting-edge research in information and communication technologies.

Congratulations to Francisca Oliveira on successfully completing her Master's in Bioengineering on October 7, 2024! Her thesis, titled “Single cell-derived 3D cancer models towards advanced metastatic breast cancer studies”, marks a significant milestone in the field of cancer research. Conducted at INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, her research was supervised by Dr. Alexandra Teixeira and Dr. Miguel Xavier from the Diéguez Research Group, along with Dr. Rui Henrique from ICBAS- Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences/Universidade do Porto. Francisca focused on creating cancer spheroids from single breast cancer cells and explored the impact of gold nanostructures (GNSs) on their growth. This work aligns with the 3DSecret project, an EU-funded initiative that aims to revolutionize cancer research by using advanced microfluidic platforms. These platforms will enable the isolation of circulating tumour cells, and their culture into 3D spheroids, and multi-parametric analysis. Francisca’s research paves the way for deeper insights into metastatic breast cancer, bringing us closer to innovative treatments and improved patient outcomes. We’re incredibly proud of her contributions and look forward to seeing her future achievements! #INL #INLnano #Nanotechnology #Bioengineering #CancerResearch #INL #3DSecret #BreastCancer #Innovation #Nanotechnology #Research

🌍 #WorldFoodDay is celebrated every year on October 16th, bringing together over 150 countries to raise awareness about poverty and hunger. It’s a day that reminds us of the global need for sustainable food solutions and equitable access to nutrition. At INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, we're committed to making a difference in this area. Nanotechnology plays a vital role in addressing food challenges—from enhancing food safety through smart packaging to developing nanosensors that detect contaminants and improve food shelf life. With these innovations, we are contributing to more sustainable and efficient food systems, a key aspect of tackling world hunger. To mark this special day, we are also celebrating the third anniversary of a unique initiative—the INL Recipe Book: Multicultural. This collection of recipes, created by our diverse INL community, is more than just a cookbook; it’s a symbol of our belief in the power of science, culture, and collaboration to make the world a better place. Since its launch in 2021, this book has been a reminder that food connects us all, just as our work in nanotechnology connects scientific innovation with real-world solutions.
