Congratulations to Francisca Oliveira on successfully completing her Master's in Bioengineering on October 7, 2024! Her thesis, titled “Single cell-derived 3D cancer models towards advanced metastatic breast cancer studies”, marks a significant milestone in the field of cancer research. Conducted at INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, her research was supervised by Dr. Alexandra Teixeira and Dr. Miguel Xavier from the Diéguez Research Group, along with Dr. Rui Henrique from ICBAS- Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences/Universidade do Porto. Francisca focused on creating cancer spheroids from single breast cancer cells and explored the impact of gold nanostructures (GNSs) on their growth. This work aligns with the 3DSecret project, an EU-funded initiative that aims to revolutionize cancer research by using advanced microfluidic platforms. These platforms will enable the isolation of circulating tumour cells, and their culture into 3D spheroids, and multi-parametric analysis. Francisca’s research paves the way for deeper insights into metastatic breast cancer, bringing us closer to innovative treatments and improved patient outcomes. On October 14, 2024, INL proudly introduced Prof. Ado Jorio as our new Deputy Director-General (DDG) in a ceremony that marks a significant step forward for our organization.   Director-General Prof. Clivia M Sotomayor Torres highlighted the strategic importance of this appointment, noting key milestones such as the rationalization of research themes and collaborations under the European Chips Act.   Local leaders, including Alderwoman Olga Pereira, emphasized the strong ties between INL and Braga, reflecting our shared commitment to innovation and community growth.   In his inspiring speech, Prof. Jório focused on the limitless potential of technology and outlined our strategic areas of focus: Research and Development, Facilities and Services, and Innovation and Technology Transfer. INL is developing super-hydrophobic sleeves for painting robots as part of the PRR GreenAuto Agenda. These nanotechnology-based coatings repel water and paint, significantly cutting waste and extending the lifespan of the sleeves, all without relying on harmful PFAS chemicals. 🔬✨ C. elegans: A Key Model in INL’s Nanosafety Research, Aligned with Insights of The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine | at INL, C. elegans plays a vital role in advancing nanosafety research. Nivedita Chatterjee - Staff Researcher at INL - explains how this model organism helps us study the biological effects of nanomaterials, providing valuable insights into gene expression and toxicity. This research aligns closely with the discoveries highlighted by the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which emphasises the role of microRNA in gene regulation— central to our work at INL. The study of C. elegans allows us to understand better how miRNA influences responses to nanomaterial exposure, ultimately ensuring safer nanotechnology applications for human health.
