Terracotta House (2021 | Singapore) The conservation of traditional Singapore bungalows is part of efforts to safeguard its heritage, as these structures are emblematic of past eras and all their architectural elements should be preserved. The Terracotta House is a good example of this. Its new facade was inspired by the traditional roof, which reduces the impact of new additions by combining earthy tones that contrast modern and ancient elements. The new facade is composed of smooth pieces with 300mm width in various shades, creating a pixelated effect that highlights the traditional construction. We have been working on two cladding pieces that stand out for their unconventional design, that have imposed some significant challenges throughout the entire production process. Their geometry is composed by a mix and variations of thicknesses, ranging from the minimum to the maximum feasible in production, highlighting the complexity and technical precision involved. The black pigmented body, used to reduce the contrast with the surface, is later finished with a glossy black glaze, giving it a sophisticated and distinctive appearance. Having it finished, we can confidently say that this production was a great learning experience, allowing us to refine some techniques and ultimately achieve a successful outcome. The final result? CSUMB Academic Building II (2015 | USA) The Academic Building II at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is also known as the Business and Information Technology Building. Academic Building II represents the university's ongoing modernization. Covering an area of 4,715 square meters, this facility was designed to house the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, accommodating 1,500 students in classrooms and 85 faculty offices. Located in California's coastal region, the building outdoor spaces were conceived to be connected to the existing walkways and key campus pathways, promoting integration and sustainability. Additionally, it was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, reflecting the university’s commitment to eco-friendly and sustainable practices. Its architectural design aligns with CSUMB's identity, harmonizing with surrounding buildings and creating a fluid connection with the campus environment. The CSUMB Academic Building II façade incorporates two distinct materials: louver and flat panels, both laid horizontally and connected to make a smooth transition from a full rainscreen façade to a clean curtain wall. This combination of materials makes the Academic Building II façade sustainable, functional, and visually striking! Women's Day On the eve of the Women’s Day celebration, we dedicate some words to Maria de Lurdes Ferrão. At just the age of 25, Milu, as she is known among the colleagues, joined Soladrilho 42 years ago (!) to take an essential role in the company. With training in Secretarial Studies in Lisbon, as well as French and English, she arrived at a time when language skills were crucial for the expansion of the company worldwide. Over the years, she has witnessed significant changes in the company, both in production and the introduction of new products. Despite her role maintaining the same core tasks – answering calls, welcoming clients, archiving documents, and handling bank issues and postal matters – her dedication has never changed. Among her most valuable experiences, she highlights attending ceramics expositions, moments that enriched her professional journey. Today, being close to retirement, we celebrate not only her path but also the role of all women who make a difference every day!
