The Caldwell Zoo released twenty zoo-reared Attwater's prairie chickens into a wildlife refuge within their native range in Texas, USA. 🐓 A critically endangered subspecies of the Greater prairie chicken, the Attwater's prairie chicken is threatened by habitat loss and overhunting, and the zoo has been involved in its conservation for over 20 years. --- Find out more: https://lnkd.in/exjAQU89 --- #ZooConservation #ExSitu #Reintroduction #PrairieChicken

ZOO SCIENCE page, sharing resources on Zoo Conservation, Research and Education.
Sobre nós
"The Zoo Scientist" was created in September 2015, first as a Facebook page, under the name "International Zoo News". The idea was to share news and information on the role of modern zoos in conservation, research and education. As this page always tried to focus as much as possible on the scientific side of zoos, the name was changed upon the creation of the website and twitter account. The Zoo Scientist is 100% not-for-profit and it is for everyone! Zoos, zoo professionals, students and scientists of all areas are welcome, and so are general public and wildlife/animal enthusiasts. We aim to provide you with reliable, useful and educational material. We want this page to turn into one of your main sources of information for world-wide Zoo Science.

New blog out by members of the BIAZA Research Committee explores the importance of collaborations between zoos and academic institutions. 🎓 While some zoos have a more passive participation in their collaborations with academia (e.g. hosting students for data collection), many zoos actively co-run undergraduate and postgraduate degrees with their university partners, and often lead on/supervise student research projects at various levels. ----- Read here: https://lnkd.in/ewmRFjfX ----- #Zoos #HigherEducation #ZooEducation #ZooResearch

A new paper in Zoo Biology described the enclosure design and husbandry of the first ex situ population of the 'Akikiki, a critically endangered Hawaiian honeycreeper: 🌳The enclosures were developed according to the species' natural habitat: dense, multi-layered native vegetation. 🌳Automated precipitation schedule according to data from the wild: automated misting heads that mimic light to heavy rain fall. 🌳Human disturbance kept to a minimum, with video surveillance used and limited human access to aviaries. 🌳Retention of wild-type behaviours is vital for the success of captive breeding and reintroduction programmes, while also important for welfare in human care. --- Read paper (open access): https://lnkd.in/e6MZtXhX --- #exsitu #captivebreeding #reintroduction #naturalbehaviour #akikiki

Automated scatter-feeding regimes were implemented in three zoo-housed meerkat groups, and the impact on their behaviour reported in a study published in Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research (JZAR). In comparison to lumped feeding, scatter feeding resulted in: ✔ Increased foraging behaviour to levels similar to those of wild conspecifics. ✔ Decrease in food monopolising behaviour. ✔ Increased activity and visibility. ✔ Sentinel behaviour during feeding bouts (in two of the zoos). ✔ Applications to ex situ management of species. --- Read paper (open access): https://lnkd.in/edXb-3yE --- #ZooResearch #enrichment #meerkats #animalwelfare

🎉Species population data from Species360's Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) has been added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. 🤝Over 1,300 zoos, aquariums and other wildlife and conservation organisations contribute data to the ZIMS global database. These data can now be more easily integrated into conservation plans and actions for threatened species, substantially advancing the One Plan Approach to conservation. --- Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ecjMWe3R --- #exsitu #insitu #wildlifeconservation #OnePlan #iucnredlist

A study in the Journal of Zoological and Botanical Gardens MDPI tested the effects of different enrichment items on the behaviour of zoo-housed cheetahs: 🐾Video monitoring of three 4-year old female cheetahs. 🐾Tactile, visual and olfactory enrichment offered four times during both day and night-time hours. 🐾Higher engagement with visual enrichment. 🐾Low engagement with olfactory enrichment. 🐾Allogrooming more frequent with night-time visual enrichment (movie). 🐾Diverse sensory-specific enrichment strategies should be included in the ex situ husbandry of cheetahs. --- Read paper (open access): https://lnkd.in/erHyr-5n --- #ZooResearch #animalwelfare #enrichment #cheetah

Great news from Western Australia, with Perth Zoo's successful breeding of the Hairy Marron, a critically endangered crayfish species endemic to the Margaret River. Over 50 craylings were reared under the zoo's Native Species Breeding Program. 🦞The zoo and partners have been working for two years to improve conservation breeding practices for this species, with the ultimate goal of releasing animals into their natural habitat and increase the wild population! --- Read more: https://lnkd.in/euCUZHzM --- #exsitu #conservationbreeding #reintroduction #crayfish #perthzoo
