  • Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) highlighted its ongoing dedication to advancing kidney health through cutting-edge treatments, research, and patient-centered care. The global healthcare community observed World Kidney Day on March 13 2025, a perfect opportunity for HMC to highlight awareness about kidney health as well as an overview of specialized services and treatments. HMC’s kidney services encompassed a comprehensive range of treatments, including advanced dialysis therapies, kidney transplantation, and specialized care for complex kidney conditions. The Corporation’s multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, surgeons, nurses, and support staff worked collaboratively to provide personalized care, ensuring optimal outcomes for patients. "At HMC, we are committed to providing the highest standard of renal care," said Dr. Hassan Al Malki, Head of Nephrology at HMC. "Our state-of-the-art facilities and commitment to continuous improvement enabled us to offer the latest advancements in kidney disease treatment. We were proud of the advancements we made in dialysis, including home dialysis, and the overall management of chronic kidney disease." HMC’s dedication to providing world-class kidney services was evident in its investment in infrastructure, technology, and staff training. This included the recently launched Kidney Transplant Precision Medicine Program, which marked a significant advancement in kidney transplant care, particularly for high-risk patients with hereditary kidney diseases. Additionally, an eight-bed ambulatory dialysis unit was opened in 2024 at Muaither Health Center as part of a joint initiative between HMC and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) to bring life-changing services closer to patients. "World Kidney Day provided a valuable opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of kidney health," Dr. Al Malki added. "We were committed to educating the public about the risk factors for kidney disease and the importance of early detection. By working with our healthcare partners in Qatar to promote healthy lifestyles and regular check-ups, we could help prevent kidney disease and improve the lives of individuals affected by it." Kidney disease can affect people of any age, gender, and race, and it is estimated that one in 10 people in Qatar had some form of kidney impairment. World Kidney Day is a global campaign that spreads knowledge about preventive behaviors, risk factors, and how to live with kidney disease. While early detection allowed for disease care and management, kidney disease-related mortality continued to increase each year. #HMC #Healthcare #KindeyHealth #Nephrology #KidneyTransplant #dialysis #KidneyDisease #Doha #Qatar #RenalCare #WorldKidneyDay2025 #March13

As the leading specialist healthcare provider in Qatar, HMC offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options to ensure early detection and effective treatment and management of glaucoma, helping to preserve vision and improve the quality of life for patients. Glaucoma is a common eye disease that can lead to irreversible vision loss if not diagnosed and treated in time. It occurs when the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged due to increased pressure in the eye. Dr. Zakia Al Ansari, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of the Glaucoma Unit at HMC, explains: “Glaucoma is often called the ‘silent thief of sight’ because it can develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Regular eye examinations are crucial for detecting the condition early and preventing permanent vision loss.” HMC provides comprehensive and world-class care for glaucoma patients – treating more than 500 patients each month, utilizing the latest advancements in ophthalmology. Through its specialized glaucoma clinics, the corporation offers a multidisciplinary approach that includes highly trained specialists, cutting-edge technology, and personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs. Our focus is on early detection, effective treatment, and continuous follow-up to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.” HMC encourages the public to prioritize their eye health by scheduling regular eye check-ups, especially for individuals at higher risk of glaucoma, including those over 40, individuals with a family history of the disease, previous eye injury, previous ocular surgeries or diseases, people who are of African, Asian or Hispanic descent, and patients with underlying conditions such as diabetes and those who are very nearsighted or far-sighted. HMC recommends that individuals at higher risk of glaucoma should get screened at 35 years of age. A complete eye exam should be repeated every 1 to 3 years, less or more often depending on the level of risk and overall eye health. All smokers and users of tobacco and nicotine products have been urged by the Tobacco Control Center at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to benefit from the holy month of Ramadan and use it as an opportunity to give up smoking forever. Dr. Ahmed Al-Mulla, Director of the Tobacco Control Center—a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating center for treating tobacco dependence—stressed that fasting is a great way for smokers to overcome their addiction to tobacco and nicotine products. He emphasized that avoiding smoking for extended periods of time during the day strengthens the self-discipline required to stop smoking and reduces both psychological and physical dependence on nicotine. “The center reports a noticeable yearly increase in the number of smokers attempting to quit during Ramadan, and the therapeutic interventions whether behavioral or medicinal, can greatly increase the chances of successfully stopping permanently,” Dr. Al-Mulla noted. Dr. Jamal Bashi, Smoking Cessation Specialist highlighted the importance of avoiding habits and behaviors that trigger the urge to smoke, such as consuming stimulants or spending time in environments that encourage smoking. He also suggested participating in social and religious activities, drinking plenty of water, using sugar-free gum in the evening, and using miswak during the fasting hours. “Withdrawal symptoms from smoking typically appear only during the first week of Ramadan and that most smokers can overcome them without medical intervention. However, the Tobacco Control Center offers medical help to those who have trouble in stopping smoking,” Dr. Bashi added. Additionally, Dr. Bashi warned against certain harmful behaviors that smokers tend to practice during Ramadan, which can be extremely dangerous to their health. Among these is smoking heavily after breaking fast which raises the risk of heart attacks and strokes and can result in a sudden rise in blood pressure. Furthermore, smoking more cigarettes in the evening increases nicotine addiction, making it more difficult to stop after Ramadan. According to Dr. Al-Mulla, HMC’s Tobacco Control Center offers a wide range of treatments to assist smokers in quitting. These treatments, which are provided through specialized programs that have been scientifically proven to be successful in assisting patients on their path to quitting smoking, include behavioral therapy, medication-based treatment, and laser therapy. Since its establishment, the center has successfully treated thousands of smokers, reducing the health and economic burden on smokers, their families, and the healthcare system. The center encourages all individuals looking to quit smoking to take advantage of its services during the holy month and book an appointment by calling: +974 40254981 or +974 50800959. #HMC #Healthcare #Tobacco #SmokingCessation #TobaccoControlCenter #Doha #WHO #QuitSmoking #Ramadan2025
