About us
The Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group is a group of policy analysts, scholars and researchers, established as a joint initiative of the European Fund for the Balkans and the Centre for Southeast European Studies of the University of Graz. The goal of the Group is to support the integration of the Western Balkans in the European Union, and to contribute to the consolidation of democracy in the region, through the facilitation of evidence-based policy dialogue. To this end, BiEPAG is conceptualized as a platform to bring closer the various political and developmental stakeholders of the individual countries of the Western Balkans – on one side, and the bodies and branches of the European Union and the governments of its constituent countries – on the other. Our experts are Florian Bieber (Coordinator), Marko Kmezić, Corina Stratulat, Alida Vračić, Bojana Baća, Damira Kapidžića, Donika Emini, Srdjan Cvijić, Gjergi Vurmo, Dejan Jović, Vedran Džihić, Tena Prelec, Jovana Marović, Dimitar Bechev, Zoran Nechev, Nicolaos Tzifakis, Marika Djolai, Natasha Wunsch, Srdjan Majstorović, Matteo Bonomi, Milica Delević.

For Al Jazeera Balkans, I offered a comprehensive analysis of demographic trends, the current state of affairs in the Western Balkans, and the implications of depopulation and immigration influx in the region. "While numbers are important in demography, an excessive focus on them can divert us from the ultimate objective—enhancing the quality of life for people in the region. Investing in health, education, and affordable housing can reduce inequalities and support families, regardless of their size. These investments inherently encourage individuals to build families. The region must cultivate solutions that seamlessly integrate family life with the demands of modern society," said Alida Vračić.

Last week I was in Sarajevo for the 10th anniversary of BiEPAG 🌟 It’s been quite a journey, for me personally, over the past six years, working with a group of terrific thinkers to promote European integration and democratic development in the Western Balkans. Alas, there is still (a lot) of work to do. EU leaders have often engaged cynically with elites in the region who promote corrosive and damaging deals. The people in the Western Balkans need to feel like a part of Europe, not a super-periphery where problems are dumped. It’s time for the EU to recognise and support their genuine efforts. https://lnkd.in/dfUaTD2E Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group

“So, the scenario of us becoming an EU member in 2028 is possible, but it implies that the EU should be honest, as well as that Montenegro has no right to make a mistake. By that date, apart from the reforms, we must push pro-Russian parties out of the Government.” ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dCd_YRMb

When Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group was launched in mid-May 2014 in Sarajevo, 🇷🇺 had already annexed Crimea, and the conflict in eastern 🇺🇦 was raging. At the same time, 🇧🇦 faced its worst floods in recent history. The February protests had subsided, but their scale and violence led 🇬🇧 foreign secretary William #Hague to call them a ‘wake-up call for all of us.’ 🇪🇺’s response: July 2014: President Juncker ruled out any 🇪🇺 enlargement before 2019. August 2014: Chancellor Merkel launched the Berlin Process to push regional integration. Back then, no one took 🇪🇺 membership prospects for 🇺🇦 or 🇧🇦 seriously. Today in Sarajevo with #BiEPAG friends, reflecting on the past 10 years and looking ahead. European Fund for the Balkans (EFB) Aleksandra Tomanic Florian Bieber Jovana Marovic
