When women are at the heart of peace negotiations, the outcomes are not just stronger—they're more inclusive, sustainable, and reflective of human rights and gender equality. Yet, in Sudan, women have often been sidelined in pivotal decision-making spaces. As attention increasingly focuses on armed groups, the invaluable perspectives and solutions brought by women leaders have been overshadowed. But change is happening! The 𝗪𝗘-𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗘! programme, backed by the European Union and executed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and UN Women, is breaking this cycle. This transformative initiative empowers Sudanese women, not just socially and economically, but also amplifies their voices in peacebuilding efforts by encouraging female entrepreneurship and offering access to innovative financial tools. A standout success? The creation of three powerful advocacy movements across Kassala, Gadaref, and the Red Sea states —each driven by 25 activists, including entrepreneurs, academics, and community leaders. These women aren't just enhancing their own capacities; they’re becoming formidable champions for civil rights and peace. The contributions of these women are fundamental to reshaping Sudan’s future. In Sudan's Kassala State, the AICS team completed monitoring visits to three cooperatives and small businesses supported by the #Ghaith Resilience Fund. This 1 million euro fund, is part of the 𝐖𝐄-𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄! Programme, aims to foster the growth of SMEs, startups, farmers, and cooperatives, promoting post-conflict recovery and sustainable development. It strengthens the economic resilience of around 800 direct beneficiaries in local communities. The first visit was to a company producing soaps, detergents, and disinfectants. With the fund's support, this startup expanded production and reached more customers locally and regionally. The second visit was to an agriculture cooperative, which used the funds to purchase greenhouses to cultivate vegetable seedlings, benefiting farmers in Kassala and neighboring states. Lastly, we visited an agro-pastoral association, involved in bull semen production for improved livestock breeding, received funds to assist pastoral farmers. These visits showcased the #Ghaith Resilience Fund’s impact on beneficiaries and the broader community. Developed by AICS Addis Ababa with support from 249Startups and Microfinanza Srl, the fund contributes to sustainable development in the region. The initiative is part of the 𝐖𝐄-𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄! In #Sudan, war and political instability have severely undermined the already fragile process of financial inclusion for #women, restricting their access to education and economic resources. The destruction of financial infrastructure and school closures have reduced employment and business opportunities for women, while cultural and social barriers further increase their vulnerability to violence and abuse. Through the WE-RISE! Programme, AICS is helping to overcome these challenges by supporting approximately 5,600 women in Kassala, Gedaref, and Red Sea State. The program promotes women's empowerment through practical initiatives such as financial training courses, opening bank accounts, facilitating access to microcredit, and supporting SMEs and start-ups. Additionally, the program aims to dismantle cultural barriers that hinder women's financial inclusion. 📣The first three contracts have already been signed with The Ghaith Fund, a #financial instrument designed to support the #growth and #development of small and medium-sized enterprises #SMEs and startups, as well as small farmers, associations, and cooperatives in Sudan. These contracts will enable launching of an International child development center, an Arts and Crafts sales center, and cleaning businesses, all led by young women and men entrepreneurs from Port Sudan. The project, coordinated by 249Startups, a business incubator, is financed by European Union funds from the𝐖𝐄-𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄! project. The village of Wad El Hilu, Kassala state, continues to host a bustling bazaar of women's products that were part of the savings and loan associations of the WE-RISE! project. The initiative supported by the European Union and implemented by AICS Khartoum, together with the NGO C.d.f, represents an #opportunity for exchange as key stakeholders, including project managers, community leaders, and representatives of #Financial institutions, have come together to support these entrepreneurs. The event aimed to foster connections, paving the way for future #FundingOpportunities and #sustainable growth for these budding #businesses. The #Humanitarian crisis in #sudan has hit especially hard women and children, representing 53% of internally #displaced #people. The conflict has devastated #Livelihoods, putting women at greater risk of exploitation and gender-based violence. AICS Khartoum responds with targeted initiatives, coordinating with local and international partners to provide primary #healthcare, reproductive health services, and #psychosocialsupport to #victims of violence. 👆60 women and girls from Gedaref state are enhancing their small business endeavors through the WE-RISE! project. They participated in professional #training sessions following the Training of Trainers model, covering Food processing, #henna and #makeup, #tailoring and #fashion #design, and #microcredit #management. What is more, they received tool kits for their businesses. Conducted by the local NGO C.D.F. over three days at the end of April, these activities equipped participants with essential skills to bolster their enterprises. This initiative fosters new job prospects in Gedaref state and enriches these women's lives, contributing to economic advancement and community development.
