📈 📺 Is ad-supported streaming the future of OTT growth? Netflix just hit 70 million monthly active users on its ad-supported plan, while Amazon is shutting down #Freevee and rolling everything under #Prime Video’s ad-supported umbrella. Two major updates that make one thing clear ❗✅ AVOD is here to stay and is fast solidifying its position in the streaming world. ❇️ Since launching its ad tier two years ago, Netflix has made it a huge success—this tier now accounts for more than 50% of all new sign-ups in key markets. With live sports, custom ad tech, and a library that keeps users coming back, they’ve built an option that doesn’t just offer value to viewers but is proving to be a real revenue driver. ❇️ Amazon, meanwhile, is phasing out Freevee, aiming to simplify the viewing experience for its users. With ads now part of Prime Video, the distinction between Freevee and Prime has blurred, so Amazon is consolidating its ad-supported content under the Prime Video umbrella to appeal to both Prime members and those who want free content. 🤔 From our perspective, it seems that Amazon likely used Freevee to size the market opportunity in its biggest regions and now feels confident transitioning to a more unified ad-supported tier within Prime Video. Although these big players took different roads, they’re now converging on a common model: Hybrid monetization on OTT. For any OTT provider aiming to reach a broader, more cost-sensitive audience, launching an ad-supported tier could be the key to growth in today’s competitive landscape. 💡 If you’re a streaming service provider exploring this strategy, here are some rules of thumb: 👉 Size the opportunity by market and segment to ensure your ad-supported tier aligns with regional preferences, platform availability and market’s differentiation strategy for other ad-funded services. 👉 Prioritize a smooth and unobtrusive ad experience to keep viewers engaged. 👉 Leverage data to personalize ads effectively, improving relevance and viewer satisfaction. 👉 Explore partnerships that expand your ad reach and boost revenue potential. An example of this is Netflix partnering with Carrefour to include its ad-supported tier in Carrefour’s loyalty program, offering subscribers additional value and reaching new audiences. A thoughtful approach to ads can truly enhance—not disrupt—the viewer experience. Accedo can support you in building a strong business case, benchmarking your service, and advising on the right investments for realistic returns.
