📹 Airpelago was recently featured in a video demo published by Swissgrid AG, the Swiss transmission grid operator. The video showcased our autonomous high-detail power line inspection process of high-voltage grids, using a DJI M350 drone and a Phase One 120-megapixel camera. 🚁 Reflections on BVLOS Operations and Safety in Drone Inspections 🚁 The reliability of the #DJI #Mavic #Enterprise platforms continues to impress me. Over the past few years, we have scaled our operations significantly, relying primarily on this platform: 📍 2021: 300 km flown 📍 2022: 4,000 km flown 📍 2023: 15,000 km flown 📍 2024: 48,000 km of power lines inspected Last year alone, we conducted over 7,000 hours of BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations—and remarkably, not a single incident was attributed to UAS-related technical failures. This is a testament to the platform’s reliability. However, we did experience two incidents where a UAS left the operational volume during an automatic return-to-home procedure in areas with significant terrain height variations. While these situations highlight the importance of careful mission planning, the overall stability of the system remains outstanding. Managing Risk in Drone Operations At a high level, drone-related risks are generally classified into two key categories: 🔹 Ground risk – The risk of drones endangering people on the ground, often due to equipment failure or uncontrolled landings. 🔹 Air risk – The risk of unintended proximity or conflict between UAS and manned aviation. Given the low rate of significant incidents and the impressive performance of the DJI UAS platforms, my biggest concern today is actually road traffic risks for our drone pilots as they travel between operations; why we now investing in this area with dedicated training and careful selection of equipment. Safety is an ongoing process, and I look forward to this week's recurrent training as we continue to refine our safety culture.
