This is Next-Gen Nordic Nuclear – Decarbonizing hydrogen, electricity, synfuels and heat by developing SMR new builds.

Om oss

This is next-gen Nordic Nuclear – decarbonizing hydrogen, electricity, synfuels and heat. Also known as KNXT. After pioneering 100% nuclear electricity contracts via Kärnfull Energi, we're now also changing the way advanced nuclear gets built. Meeting an ever-increasing demand for fossil-free and reliable energy requires innovative thinking. Our entrepreneurial way of developing SMR new builds means we plan on becoming a major factor in solving Scandinavia's sustainability puzzle. Small modular reactors mean greater flexibility than traditional nuclear, and delivery of clean, fossil-free energy in multiple forms – electricity, hydrogen, ammonia, synthetic fuels and heat – likely to become the fastest, cheapest and most eco-friendly way to decarbonize the energy sector. How do we decarbonize the maritime sector and what would this mean for the Nordic region in terms of extra power production? We recently conducted some back-of-the-envelope calculations to provide a clearer picture of what we might face: 🚢 Assuming an average-sized maritime vessel (cargo, tanker, ferry, etc.) would need about 200 metric tonnes of methanol per day and spends 75% of its time at sea, that translates to approximately 55 kilo tonnes per year per vessel. 🔋 So, what does this mean for power production? Utilizing a generic 300MW small modular reactor (SMR) and commercial hydrogen and methanol production facilities, provided by the likes of Topsoe, we would need about 60MW of nuclear capacity solely for methanol production for one vessel. 📊 To put this into perspective, if we consider that roughly 400 of these vessels operates in the Nordics, we would require over 75 SMRs (23GW) dedicated just to this purpose. 🚢 Or as another example, A.P. Moller - Maersk operates approximately 700 vessels, meaning they would need close to 50GW of nuclear capacity alone. This is just one scenario in an ever-growing list of examples showing that if we aim to decarbonize in this way, we must leverage every single tool at our disposal. We can't just paint the walls, we also need to lay the foundation. Luckily, there is one such company, Kärnfull Next, who aims to do precisely that. Bringing innovation within financial modelling and project delivery to scale-up nuclear beyond what could be done by purely demanding our utilities to do so. Also, we want to mention, we are energy and derivatives experts and not maritime operations experts. So, please feel free to reach out regarding some of our assumptions in this sector or just want to discuss future possibilities.

📣 As the leading Nordic developer of #SMR projects, Kärnfull Next’s Head of Business Development John Eliasson is part of the Swedish Delegation at the Roadmaps to New Nuclear conference, co-chaired by Sweden's Deputy PM and Minister for #Energy, Ebba Busch and William D. Magwood, IV, Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency. This conference builds on the momentum of the #COP28 agreement, where 20 nations committed to tripling global #nuclear power capacity by 2050 as a critical strategy to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Now, together with global leaders, we are moving from commitment to action, paving the way for a sustainable nuclear future. Today, Kärnfull Next had the pleasure of joining a panel moderated by Phil Reid and hosted by Platform Markets Group, where Christian Sjölander, Sandro Baldi, Eric Lamendour and Andrew Murdoch discussed the possibility for nuclear to solve the power conundrum for data centers. The rapidly increasing Demand for AI datacenters together with grid and power constraints can be long term solved by a close partnerships between nuclear- and data center developers. Co location of important energy and information infrastructure will result in economies of scale in permitting and deployment. The panel highlighted the need for early cooperation and an urgency to start cooperation now as lead times in project development are longer for power production than for data centers. Just yesterday Oracle revealed that they are planning three sites for SMR powered data centers in the US and this might be the start of a joint effort in decarbonising whilst increasing capacity. #DataCenters #SMRs #NewNuclear #Decarbonisation #karnfull #KNXT

🙌🏻 Many thanks ONS for an awesome event, such a vibrant atmosphere and truly a great sign of the times that this leading #energy forum included #NuclearEnergy for the first time ever – the year it celebrates its 50th anniversary. Was amazing to meet so many new and old friends and Karnfull-supporters, and to see the #nuclear seminars packed with an enthusiastic audience. Moving focus and funding from oil to atoms is a natural step for Norway, and beyond. Stay tuned!
