Why is this still happening? Two major shipping companies were recently fined $2 million and sentenced to four years of probation for illegally discharging oil-contaminated waste and falsifying records to cover it up. The ship’s captain was even sentenced to 8 months in prison for obstructing the investigation. Despite clear regulations like MARPOL Annex I, these environmental violations keep occurring. Why are we still seeing this? Because too many operators fail to take proactive responsibility for their onboard waste water treatment systems. The solution is easy We believe the solution goes beyond just avoiding penalties—it’s about doing what’s right for the future of our planet. Our mission is clear: “Clean water overboard.” Through constant innovation, we set the gold standard in onboard water treatment, helping the industry not just stay compliant, but ensure a cleaner sea for generations to come. Contact us today to learn how our solutions can help your fleet remain compliant, avoid costly fines, and protect the oceans. https://lnkd.in/deAR8qfg Full article: https://lnkd.in/dUKurkTy #Maritime #Compliance #CleanSea #WastewaterManagement #ContactUs

Stronger Regulations Needed to Protect Our Oceans By Peter Lanzén, Co-founder of Marinfloc Every ship leaving a shipyard with a substandard water treatment system will pollute the oceans for the next 25 years. This is a hidden crisis that fails to reach the public even though it is pretty established among those ever sailed on a commercial vessel and even some regulatory bodies, yet its impact on our marine ecosystems is devastating.... The person behind the scenes, Marinfloc presents our Sales Coordinator Marie-Louise Sjöstrand. With a background as a former crew member, having worked on a variety of vessels across the globe—ranging from cargo ships to private yachts— Marie-Louise has developed a deep understanding of the maritime industry. This experience enhances her role, providing significant insight into industry practices and challenges. Tell us a bit about your role as a Sales Coordinator at Marinfloc My main responsibility at Marinfloc is to serve as the primary point of contact for all our Service agreement customers. This involves managing communication, addressing inquiries, and resolving any issues that may arise, while ensuring customer satisfaction with the services we provide. What types of questions or issues do you typically help customers and agents with? As the primary point of contact, I manage a wide range of customer requests. For example, I assist with booking their annual services and provide monthly operational updates to help them optimize their performance. This support ensures our customers are industry leaders in handling bilge, EGR, and sewage water. Additionally, I coordinate and schedule customers for courses and trainings, handling all logistics related to these events. What is the most challenging aspect of working "behind the scenes"? One of the biggest challenges is gathering accurate information in an industry that’s constantly evolving. Ships frequently change names, owners, crews, and management, making it difficult to keep all the details up to date and find the correct points of contact for our customers. However, this dynamic environment is also enjoyable and a great learning experience. For instance, just today I found out that a ship I was researching, which had changed its name, was actually a sister ship to one I had worked on as a crewmember in the past. What do you find most rewarding about your job? I truly enjoy being proactive and tackling problems, and there's a special satisfaction in seeing those issues resolved. I love witnessing how our industry evolves and how we spread knowledge using the wealth of experience we have in our company. If you had to describe your role in three words, what would they be? I would say stimulating, inventive, and highly satisfying I’m proud to play a role in ensuring clean water for our children and their future #BilgeWaterTreatment #SustainableShipping #ACleanSea #MarineInnovation

A recent study from Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden has shed light on the serious issue of greywater from ships in the Baltic Sea. The findings reveal that levels of contaminants often exceed the IMO MEPC 227(64) standards for treated sewage effluent. When we consider pollutants like Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), the data shows that untreated greywater frequently contains higher concentrations of these contaminants than the permitted limits for treated blackwater. Given that the volume of greywater generated on ships is about four times larger than blackwater, it represents a significant source of potential pollution in marine environments, especially in sensitive water bodies with low circulation, such as the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean.   These findings clearly highlight the need for action. The lack of regulations for greywater discharge is a major gap in our efforts to protect marine ecosystems. It's time for the maritime industry to adopt guidelines for managing and treating ship-generated greywater to prevent further damage to our oceans. #MarinePollution #Greywater #SustainableShipping #IMO #marpol #annexIV Read the whole article here:
