🔍 New Working Paper Alert! 🔍 QoG - Quality of Government Institute is excited to announce a new working paper by Hilma Lindskog and Daniel Carelli, "Children of the State: Ideological Education Increases Support for Autocratic Leadership" (QoG Working Paper Series 2024:10). This paper explores the significant role that ideological content in education can play in shaping political attitudes, particularly in fostering support for autocratic leadership. Through a comparative analysis of historical educational data and survey responses, the study reveals that while education typically reduces support for autocracy, this effect is diminished or even reversed when students are exposed to authoritarian content in school curricula. By exploiting reforms in compulsory education across several countries, the paper leverages a regression discontinuity design to provide causal evidence supporting the association identified in the initial study. Together, these studies offer key insights, such as: 📜 The impact of authoritarian ideology in curricula on long-term political attitudes. 👩🏫 How teachers aligned with the state ideology amplify these effects. 🌍 The complex relationship between education systems and support for democracy or autocracy across various countries. 👉🏿Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gEq82ECJ #Education #PoliticalAttitudes #QoGInstitute #Governance #Autocracy #Research

Conducting research on the causes, consequences and nature of Good Governance and the Quality of Government
Om oss
The Quality of Government (QoG) Institute was founded in 2004 by Professor Bo Rothstein and Professor Sören Holmberg. It is an independent research institute within the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg. We are about 30 researchers who conduct and promote research on the causes, consequences and nature of Good Governance and the Quality of Government (QoG) - that is, trustworthy, reliable, impartial, uncorrupted and competent government institutions. Our research addresses the questions of how to create and maintain high quality government institutions and how the quality of such institutions influences public policy and socio-economic conditions in a broader sense. While Quality of Government is our common intellectual focal point, we apply a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives. Around thirty researchers are currently engaged in different projects organized or funded by the QoG Institute. A central part of establishing the QoG Institute has been the construction of a comparative data base and we believe that we now have the most complete data set pertaining to this type of research. We offer several open-source datasets, a variable search tool, visualization tools and some extra information, all about Quality of Government.
