We are an independent nonprofit accelerating solutions to ensure a healthy Baltic Sea for future generations by 2030.
Om oss
We are a solution and business oriented non-profit organisation founded by Zennström Philanthropies. Our mission is to improve the health of the Baltic Sea. To achieve the most impact, we focus our efforts on the predominant issue affecting the Baltic Sea, namely eutrophication, causing dead bottoms, algae blooms, fish mortality and poor water transparency. We work in collaboration with researchers, governmental institutions, other non-profit organisations, private sector and entrepreneurs. Our projects are selected based on their cost efficiency and impact potential. If we continue the historic efforts, we can bend the curve on eutrophication and reach a state where the Baltic Sea starts restoring itself, by 2030

On October 30, our Business Manager, Kamil Jagodziński, took part in the "Baltic Ports for Climate Conference 2024" 🌊, held in Tallinn and organised by the Baltic Ports Organization and Port of Tallinn. The conference highlighted some of the biggest environmental challenges facing the Baltic Sea: #OffshoreWind, #Decarbonization, and #AlternativeFuels. 🌱⚓️ During the morning session, Kamil took the stage and presented our latest "Catalogue of Best Practices and Technologies for Handling Dry Bulk Goods – focusing on fertilizers and phosphate rock". His presentation was met with great enthusiasm and generated valuable feedback. ✨ The event was also a fantastic opportunity to expand our network and connect with leaders in the #MaritimeIndustry. 🌐 #BalticPorts #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Networking

We recently shared the news about our cooperation agreement with Fabryka Zieleni SA. After partnering with us a prevention cover has been installed and we can confirm that it has already had its first tests and it worked great! 🚢 💦

We’re pleased to showcase Fabryka Zieleni SA’s initiative in partnership with us! Their new prevention cover is a significant step forward in reducing emissions during transshipment and enhancing quay cleaning efficiency. Together, we are committed to protecting the Baltic Sea🌊!
Dzięki naszemu partnerstwu z Race For The Baltic wprowadzamy do użytku nowy sprzęt portowy - pokrywę ochronną, która zabezpiecza przestrzeń między burtą statku, a nabrzeżem. Dzięki niej skutecznie zredukujemy emisje podczas przeładunku i zminimalizujemy czas potrzebny na sprzątnięcie nabrzeża. Ta inicjatywa podkreśla nasze zaangażowanie w ograniczanie wpływu naszych działań na środowisko morskie. Razem troszczymy się o Morze Bałtyckie! 🌊

📣Launch of the Dry Bulk project and PortSHAZ kick-off in Elbląg, Poland We’ve kicked off the Dry Bulk Project, building on our Port Project experience. Co-financed by the Interreg South Baltic Programme PortSHAZ, this new project focuses on reducing leakage of phosphorus-rich materials like fodder and grains in ports, with best practices and innovative technical solutions at the core. On October 8-9, we joined the PortSHAZ kick-off in Elbląg, Poland, alongside partners from across the Baltic region including Elbląg Sea Port Authority, K2 Solutions Foundation, Coastal Research and Planning Institute (CORPI), and the Institute for Sustainable Economy and Logistics. Discussions highlighted innovations in sustainable maritime operations, including cargo leakage prevention. We were excited to visit the Vistula Spit canal, a major new infrastructure investment in the region. A special thanks to Arkadiusz Zgliński (Port of Elbląg), Kamila Nowicka (Interreg South Baltic), Rafał Koba, and Marcin Kalinowski (K2 Solutions) for the event and the valuable expertise you provided. We're eager to build on this momentum and contribute to advancing sustainable maritime activities in the South Baltic region🌾🌊. Reed makes the headlines as reed harvesting is well underway in the Gryt archipelago, Östergötland, carried out by Svensk Vassklippning AB. Maria Gustavsson, water ecologist and project manager for #BalticReed at the County Administrative Board of Östergötland (Länsstyrelsen Östergötland), was interviewed on-site by Sveriges Radio. 🎙️ She explains that when reeds are cut today, most are left to decompose, which causes the nutrients to gradually return to the aquatic environment. A key aspect of the project is to repurpose the reeds as a valuable resource. Therefore, the harvested reeds will be used to produce items such as straws or planting soil. For more details about the harvested pilot areas check out the County Administrative Board's website 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfr8MAe4 🎧 Listen to the full radio segment here (in Swedish): https://lnkd.in/dW6GF-q8

Check your inbox for the latest newsletter from Race For The Baltic! 📬 During the third quarter, there has been a lot of activity in our new projects. We have conducted field tests measuring the effects of gypsum treatment as well as structure liming in #GYPREG. 🌱👑 In addition, we were visited by H.R.H. The Crown Princess, who had the opportunity to speak with researchers, spread gypsum, and observe its effects on the water. In BalticReed, reeds have been harvested, product tests have been conducted, and we are already seeing products on the market! We have also started a new project where we’ve bulked up on knowledge from the Port project. This time, it’s all about the handling of fodder and grains in ports. Introducing: the Dry Bulk project which is partly financed by the EU project #PortShaz. 💦 Stay tuned for more news about our new project and sign up for our newsletter! https://lnkd.in/dUSVjXcj Or read the newsletter here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dMPHQrKd

Did you know that the buildings and construction sector is responsible for a significant carbon footprint, accounting for a staggering 37% of global emissions? The BalticReed project aims to explore the potential of coastal reed in promoting low-carbon construction and architecture. This week, the project organised a two-day study trip to Estonia, bringing together architects, roof thatchers, reed harvesters, and entrepreneurs from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Estonia. The first day a seminar, focusing on the use of reed as a sustainable building material, was arranged in collaboration with Professor Kimmo Lylykangas, head of the Architecture Unit at TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, as part of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2024. On the second day the group visited UKU - Pure Earth, a special thanks to UKU for showcasing your products and the production of reed boards, which are used as panels under plaster and for interior design. Reed has been utilised in construction for centuries, and visits like these are an important step in sharing knowledge and expertise, ensuring the continued development and spread of reed-based innovations in construction and architecture. 🤝 EKOLUTION , Sutu, UKU - Pure Earth, Joar Nilsson, Svenska Stråtäckarföreningen, Svensk Vassklippning AB, Ruokomestarit, AW2 architecture & interiors, Leapfrog Projects - Business Advisory, Katrineholms kommun, Xamk - South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, John Nurmisen Säätiö, Race For The Baltic, Arcada University of Applied Sciences, Ålands Landskapsregering.
