🏗️ Construction update! 🏗️ Recently, the team in Boden installed the hot DRI bins, which will hold direct reduced iron as it makes its way from the DRI tower to the melt shop. The bins are not only the first pieces of process equipment to be installed, they are also a key interface between the green iron plant and the steel mill!

Accelerating the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries

What makes green hydrogen green? Our giga-scale electrolyzer, which we will use to produce green hydrogen, will not only be Europe's largest, but also one of the biggest in the world! Green hydrogen, produced from water using 100% renewable electricity, has the potential to transform hard-to-abate industries, starting with steel and iron.

The days are getting shorter in Boden, but progress at the world's first large-scale green steel plant continues apace. Europe's first new steel mill in 50 years is taking shape, with game-changing innovations that make it possible for us to produce near-zero emission steel, setting a new industry standard. We're shaping a cleaner world for future generations.

"I spent 20 years working at the same company in Finland, starting as an operator and working my way up to production manager. Hydrogen has been a big part of my career, and so I know a thing or two about it. In the end, hydrogen is hydrogen, and I know how it behaves and how to respect it, but now we’re using new, greener technology. When you spend half of your life at the same company, you have a good familiarity with a place and you know the people and they know you. But when I saw the opportunity at Stegra, it felt right to join. I think we are doing something really important and right for all of us. Here, I get to help build something new, without dealing with the burden of history. And to be able to leave a legacy in that way is pretty special. Since joining Stegra, it’s been quite an experience. I like the company and the ideas behind it – it’s really go big or go home. We are aiming for the sky, and I believe we will make it successful." – Teemu Suursalmi, Head of hydrogen, Boden operations

Our plant will be the first in the world to have an integrated system for green hydrogen, iron and steel. The water treatment processes are a very important part of the infrastructure at our plant. We will use a solution that ensures a holistic water management system for the steel plant and it includes elements such as treatments for ultra-pure water, wastewater recycling and zero liquid discharge. We have come as far as we have today, by working with the right partners in different areas. To make sure we have a sustainable water treatment plant in Boden we have partnered with greenfield investment partner, John Laing and Aquatech, a leading provider of zero-liquid discharge water treatment services. This collaboration is a good example of the types of partnerships that are needed to support the shift towards sustainable solutions in hard-to-abate industries like steel, leveraging each players’ strength. John Laing’s as an international investor and active manager of core infrastructure assets and Aquatech’s as a provider of sustainable water and process technology solutions and ours as in industrial impact company. How do we make steel greener? That's the topic of a recent business school teaching case from the Financial Times, featuring Stegra! We are shown as an example of a company using an established steelmaking process (DRI-EAF method) but swapping out fossil fuels for green hydrogen, which we will also produce. We are happy to be featured as an example of what is being done to decarbonize steel. And we hope other companies can learn from our example and join us in bringing emissions down! We're raising the roof! The autumn colors are out in full force in Boden, and progress continues at our site. The conveyor tower, which will transport green sponge iron from our direct reduction tower to our steel mill, is getting closer to its final height of more than 100 meters, and the roof is taking shape at the melt shop!

What a Climate Week we had last week! Representing Stegra in New York were Lina Håkansdotter, our Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, and Maria Persson Gulda, our Chief Technology Officer. Here are some of their takeaways from a week with a lot of positive vibes, but where it’s clear the speed of change is not quick enough to break the curve of emissions and stop climate change! 🗣️ For Maria, the highlight was a meeting with the White House, where officials listened with curiousity and interest as she spoke about our green premium as well as the importance of a price on carbon and the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. 🏭 For Lina, the biggest highlight was taking opportunities to leverage our partnerships. We joined LeadIT, a group of like-minded countries and companies focused on decarbonizing industry, and were also the first Climate Solutions Company within ERI (Exponential Roadmap Initiative). 🎙️Word seems to have traveled fast about our name change, from H2 Green Steel to Stegra, and the response has been so positive! Our new name represents our ambition, rising to the challenge and pushing forward, and moving beyond steel – to decarbonize the whole industry, our focus needs to be on producing green hydrogen and iron where it's both environmentally and economically advantageous. 🗺️ Among the companies focused on climate, there is always a positive tone, and there is progress with the growth of renewable energy and climate impact investments. But the speed of change is still not fast enough, and we need policymakers to do more to set a price on carbon globally, as well as encourage financial institutions to take more risks earlier and in smaller projects, in order to accelerate the pace of change! 🤝 It’s fantastic to be able to exchange ideas and find inspiration, and we are happy to see that Stegra is also inspiring others, both policymakers and business leaders!
