Accelerating the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries

Last week, Stegra contributed to the relaunch of the European Parliament’s Cleantech Friendship Group, which is supported by EU policymakers and cleantech industry leaders, including our CTO Maria Persson Gulda and EU public affairs lead Ola Hansén. With over 30 MEPs from across political groups, this growing coalition underscores the crucial role of cleantech in driving Europe’s green industrial development and global competitiveness. President von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Commission's strong commitment to scaling up cleantech and advancing industrial competitiveness. And the message is clear. Europe must stay the course on decarbonization and innovation. Now it's time to turn ambition into action!

Building the foundation for the future! 🏗️ Our construction crews are hard at work on the equipment foundations for the steel mill process equipment, installation of which will begin in the coming months. Here, you can see foundation work for the roughing mill equipment, which will be part of our CSP hot rolling mill. Here, steel, concrete, and hard work are coming together to create the world's first large-scale green steel plant. Exciting progress ahead!

At Stegra, we know that diverse teams drive innovation, strengthen our culture and lead to better results. We base our choices on science, as always, rather than opinions or populistic ideas. That’s why we are committed to building an inclusive workplace where different perspectives and experiences are valued every day. Women have long been underrepresented in the steel industry, but we are actively working to change that. We aim for gender balance across all levels of our organization, including leadership, and we are continuously striving to level the playing field. While more men still apply for our roles, we believe that true progress comes from actively challenging the status quo. Right now, women make up more than 40% of our employees, and the gender balance in the management team is 50/50. It's unparalleled in the steel industry, but we are still not where we want to be and know there is still work to do as we grow. Our goal is not just representation but also creating a workplace where everyone feels a true sense of belonging. The women at Stegra drive innovation and progress, and are shaping the future of heavy industry. Are you ready to make an impact? Explore our open positions or join our talent pool. We'd love to hear from you!

As the complexity and number of colleagues at our Boden site grows daily, safety remains one of our main focus areas. We recently ran a Level 2 First Aid Course on-site, featuring intense, hands-on scenarios ranging from catastrophic bleeds to multi-injury events. “It’s always refreshing to see a company truly invest in emergency response capabilities,” says HSE Supervisor Gerald Fox. “Not as a box-ticking exercise, but as a real commitment to keeping people safe. We really had to think on our feet in high-pressure scenarios.”

Stegra joined President von der Leyen's Strategic Dialogue on Steel yesterday, along with some other companies and organizations in the value chain of the European steel industry, to give our input to the Steel and Metals Action Plan. Executive Vice Presidents Séjourné and Ribera and Commissioners Hoekstra and Šefčovič also joined the meeting. For European industry to continue to be competitive, we need to have companies that adapt, innovate and modernize to provide what customer's are asking for. And our customers are clear with us – they want steel with lower emissions.

Progress is taking shape at Stegra’s green hydrogen plant in Boden! We’re nearing completion of the steel structure and cladding on our first electrolyzer building, while the second is coming together quickly. This momentum brings us closer to delivering green hydrogen at scale, a crucial step as we build the world's first large-scale plant for green hydrogen, green iron and green steel. The decarbonization of hard-to-abate industry isn’t just an idea. It’s happening in Boden!

This past summer, Microsoft visited us in Boden to document our journey toward production of steel with near zero CO2-emissions. Microsoft is one of our investors through their Climate Innovation Fund. With access to abundant green power in northern Sweden, we will reducing emissions from steel by up to 95%, supporting automakers, appliance manufacturers and other industries in their decarbonization efforts, and creating lasting benefits for the Boden region. Watch the video to see how innovation and sustainability come together at Stegra!
Stegra, one of our Climate Innovation Fund portfolio companies, is developing the world’s first large-scale green steel plant, replacing coal with hydrogen from renewable energy. These efforts are reducing carbon emissions from steel production by up to 95%, helping to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries like construction and automotive manufacturing. Discover how green power is helping Stegra lead the charge toward a cleaner future.

In January, Michael Koegel moved to Boden from south Texas. With more than 15 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, most recently from the caster maintenance department at a steel mill in the U.S., Michael will be a Mechanical Maintenance Manager in the casting area. "Coming here from south Texas, I'm not sure this part of Sweden could be any more different than what my family is used to. Before we got here, my wife and kids hadn't even seen actual snow, but we're really enjoying the change. This is a big step for us, but starting up a steel mill like this is the kind of thing you get to experience once in a lifetime, and I couldn't pass it up. So far, we're enjoying Boden. Racing cars is my hobby, and volunteering at the rally last weekend really got me excited about what I could do while I'm here."

🎂 Stegra turns four today! 🎂 Looking at what we have done this past year, it's hard to believe that we have accomplished so much in such a short time. But everything Stegra has achieved comes down to our team's unified focus on building our plant and operations in Boden so that we can kick off production of near-zero emissions steel next year. During these past 12 months, we have made significant progress in all areas of the facility. From pouring the foundation for our direct reduction tower in March 2024 to raising the first steel for our cold rolling mill and green hydrogen plant late last year, we are moving full steam ahead to make the Boden plant a reality. But not just that – we also took a big step in changing our name from H2 Green Steel to Stegra to reflect our long-term ambition to decarbonize hard-to-abate industry for good. Check out the progress on our steel mill and DR tower this past year!
