Innovation and the future of sustainable mining – highlights from our Program day! Today, project leaders and innovators from Swedish Mining Innovation came together to showcase their projects – from sustainable recycling of critical metals to cutting-edge energy-efficient technologies. – Many of the projects we’re seeing today, such as battery and critical metals recycling, weren't even on the radar when the program began. Now, we're funding a wider range of circular solutions to meet the pressing demands of society's transition, says Charlotte Andersson, Program Director at Swedish Mining Innovation. The power of networking was clear right from the start. Even before the day had officially begun, Catrin Edelbro from Itasca had already forged new connections. – I came here to listen and learn, but within just five minutes, I made a valuable contact. We quickly saw the potential for future collaboration – Chalmers tekniska högskola has a need, and we have a product that could be a perfect fit, even though it hasn't been tested for this specific purpose before. While he focuses on the finer details of rock analysis, I work on the bigger picture with the entire rock mass. It's a true day of networking, with many attending just to listen and explore new opportunities for collaboration, says Catrin Edelbro. Thank you to everyone who joined us today. Together, we’re building a greener future for the mining industry. Mining innovation for a sustainable future

⛏Digging deep Innovation Drivers: The underrated social innovation catalyst Are field trips really just breezy social events, offering a participants a break from the daily work and change of scenery? In fact, they powerful arenas for transformative social innovation, enabling participants to engage with real-world challenges, collaborate across diverse groups, and cultivate new ways of thinking that drive societal progress. To enable this momentum, Swedish Mining Innovation has arranged themed learning tours for graduate students, PhD students, mining district public officials and industry R&D professionals. – In a time where the world faces increasingly complex problems, field trips offer a powerful method for cultivating the mindset, skills and communities needed to drive transformative change. Through immersive learning, participants not only broaden their perspectives but also leave with a renewed sense of possibility, equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow, says Niclas Dahlström, social innovation lead and senior project manager Swedish Mining Innovation, Swedish Metals & Minerals and LTU Business Finding the future For graduate students and PhD students the trips are also a means to connect young professionals with the inspiring challenges and leading players in the field. – One of the key objectives is to give a broader perspective of the industry, and the role of mining in society. We want to create meetings places for PhD students from all universities and mining-related research topics in Sweden, regardless of if it is Natural, Engineering, or Social Sciences, says Nils F Jansson, associate professor in Ore Geology at Luleå University of Technology and leader of the Swedish Mining Innovation #PhDNetwork that currently has nearly 100 members from 13 universities. As part of a larger project, non-profit Georange has led the learning tour aimed at municipal organisations and public officials in mining districts such as Kiruna kommun, Pajala Kommun, Gällivare kommun, Lindesbergs kommun, Ljusnarsberg, Hedemora kommun, Askersunds kommun, Jokkmokks kommun, Haparanda stad, Lycksele Kommun, Malå Kommun, Norberg, Norsjö kommun, Skellefteå Sweden, Skinnskatteberg, Storumans kommun, Övertorneå kommun and Älvsbyns Kommun. The purpose is to support municipalities in their work to ensure that mining and mineral projects contribute to positive community development and welfare. – I think it is important to meet others in the same situation, exchange ideas with others and find other skills that you may need and can contact for help, Anna Kumpula, Georange chairman and project lead. ⛏Digging deep is a glimpse into some of the many things that the program has contributed to, helped create or enabled since the start in 2013. "Safe and Sustainable Transport in Reindeer Husbandry Areas" - a project carried out by Sattajärvi Sameby, Kaunis Iron, Boliden, LKAB, Volvo Trucks, Luleå University of Technology and LTU Business closed with promising results earlier this year. Now, the project can continue to build on this progress through new funding from Vinnova, Formas, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development and Swedish Energy Agency through Swedish Mining Innovation. - The project leads to increased knowledge in society about reindeer husbandry and the mining industry. By extension, we hope that the project will inspire others to collaborate on difficult challenges and conflicts of interest. These challenges can be found anywhere in society and I am convinced that we need more concrete examples and knowledge of how to engage in dialog and collaborate to jointly find solutions, says David Kero, project manager at LTU Business.
