  • International Women’s Day on March 8th is a day dedicated to honoring the achievements of women and serves as a call to action for accelerating the efforts towards gender equality and addressing the ongoing challenges women face. At Boliden, we work actively to promote positive changes in the field of gender equality and strive to create a more inclusive industry for future generations. In December 2024, a significant milestone was achieved in the mining- and metal industry with the establishment of a benchmark for gender representation and equality. This achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Boliden and the fellow members in ICMM. The initiative aims to drive more diverse, safe, and inclusive workplaces by enabling companies to track their progress in implementing equitable practices in hiring, pay, and investment in training. The benchmark will be reported in a biennial performance report starting in 2026, providing transparency and accountability for companies and stakeholders. This achievement marks a crucial step towards improved performance on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across the entire industry. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #GenderEquality #DEI

  • This week, EcoLink was inaugurated – a joint venture by Boliden Rönnskär and the local energy company Skellefteå Kraft to turn even more waste heat into district heating. The expanded district heating network means that more of the waste heat from Rönnskär will be used instead of being released into the sea, while Skellefteå Kraft no longer needs to burn peat to create heat. An improvement in Rönnskär's energy efficiency and overall, a large saving of carbon dioxide emissions. This project has been made possible through partial funding from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency via the investment support program, Climate Leap (Klimatklivet).   We extend our gratitude to our partners Skellefteå Kraft AB and all others involved in making this a success.   In the photo are Linn Andersson, General Manager of Boliden; Evelina Fahlesson, Municipal Commissioner of Skellefteå Municipality; Kristina Sundin Jonsson, Head of Administration of Skellefteå Municipality; and Joachim Nordin, CEO of Skellefteå Kraft.

  • Boliden has been granted a mining concession for the Nautanen copper deposit outside Gällivare in Sweden. Nautanen is an historic mining site, and Boliden has conducted exploration in the area for many years. In addition to copper, the mining concession includes molybdenum, silver and gold. The mining concession, which has not yet entered into legal force, can be appealed. Before any mining can be carried out Boliden will also have to apply for an environmental permit, meaning that there is more exploration as well as detailed studies to be carried out and a long way to go before any mining can be carried out. However, this decision implies an important first step on the way to secure copper for the continued electrification of society. Learn more about our Nautanen project at https://bitly.cx/psOg

  • In Aitik, we implemented ecological compensation after extending our tailings dams in 2016. The area used was a selectively logged forest lacking dead and decaying wood, vital for many insect and fungi species. Our offsetting entailed translocating old tree trunks and decaying wood from the impact area and veteranizing existing trees.    The ecological compensation in Sarkanenä was made possible through a collaboration between Boliden, the ladowner Sveaskog and SLU (Swedish University of Agriculture), where research showed that many insect and fungi species moved to the new area. Sara Carlsén, our biodiversity coordinator at Boliden, emphasized the importance of these results: “These results show that there is a large potential to increase biodiversity values in the nature surrounding our mines. When we have tried all measures to avoid and minimize impacts on species and ecosystem, the last step is ecological compensation, and it is important to know that efforts such as translocating dead wood works.”    Two years ago, we inaugurated our first Sustainability Park in Aitik. This park features a 3 km adventure trail with interactive stations where visitors can learn about forest biodiversity. It also includes a fireplace, outhouses, and an accessibility ramp at the entrance.    Read more about our Sustainability Park at Boliden.com https://lnkd.in/dwYhcTx3
