Getting immersed in your topic is usually a great idea...
... and in the past couple of years, a number of different technologies have emerged that let you record and view 360-degree "immersive" videos. Here's a nice example from David Hsieh:
This is just one of many examples of immersive imagery.
As you probably know, the New York Times is (justly, in my opinion) famous for their Google Cardboard VR stories.
But you can imagine where my interest lies--how do you search for these things?
Today's SearchResearch Challenges:
1. How DO you find immersive online experiences? (I've mentioned videos as one way to be immersed. Are there other ways to get that experience?)
2. How can you find immersive experiences by location? For instance, can you find all of the immersives that are near the Wat Chedi Luang temple in Thailand, especially ones that show the famous reclining Buddha? For instance, can you also find an immersive that shows you the view from the mountain peak that's about 5 miles (8 km) to the west of the temple?

Most importantly for this week--say HOW you found the immersive experiences. What search terms did you use? And if you learn any new concepts about immersive experiences, let us know what terms / concepts you now know.
(Keep in mind we're not looking for holodecks, but immersive experiences that you could plausibly have at home or in the office.)
Search on... immersively!
Good day, Dr. Russell and everyone.

What is Virtual Reality? and examples
Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment...By simulating as many senses as possible, such as vision, hearing, touch, even smell, the computer is transformed into a gatekeeper to this artificial world.

I tried yesterday Google Expeditions and I found out that I can't do them alone. I need to connect with someone else. Of course, Expeditions were created for teaching so it is logical that more people is needed.

Good Morning and week, Dr. Russell and everyone.
DeleteFor this Challenge, tried to find a tool or a site to find the immersive experiences. Found some very good, but not the ones Dr. Russell asked for.
Then I tried [related:www.nytimes.com/marketing/nytvr/] didn't work to get results that we need.
It was great to find VR and how is helping in Medicine, Science, Engineering and also for meditation.
I am looking forward to read Dr. Russell's answer
Anne and Deb here - one immersive experience that is very useful for schools and teachers is the virtual field trip. That sounds like it would meet the definition of an immersive experience. To find virtual field trips we did a search in Google for many results came up. These results could be limited by subject area.
ReplyDeleteAnother common school experience is to do an author visit. These can now be done using Facetime or Skype.
Virtual reality is another concept that comes to mind. We haven't used it at all in our library but know of librarians who have set up a "virtual world" and then have the students interact in that platform.
To answer the second question we thought that Google Earth would provide the answer so we went to google advanced search and limited our results to KMZ files which are Google earth files. We think you can also use KML files which are also Google Earth. We started out just searching for Wat Chedi Luang and did find tours of the temple. We tried searching for the reclining buddha this way but it didn't work so instead did as search in Google Earth for the reclining Buddha and we did find a result but wasn't what we considered immersive - was more of a place marker. We'll continue to look and see if we can find out more.
