Drones can be used in many scenarios and one of our previous tasks was to scan a damaged ship. With the help of Lixel L2 Scanner, mounted on DJI M350, we collected point cloud data of the ship, making it easier for parties to visualize the damage. L2 scanner provides denser point clouds with a scan speed of 320,000 points/second. Coupled with the SLAM technique, the whole ship, including the sides, can be scanned. Point cloud of the vessel is available immediately after the mission is completed and can be further refined using desktop software. Our pilots spent the past week out at sea battling the sun and operating in challenging conditions in order to provide timely aerial footage of the oil spill to Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). We could do this at short notice due to the numerous exercises that we participated in with MPA. Kudos to the pilots' hard work.
Thanks to the support of partners and volunteers, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) & agencies continue to make progress on recovery efforts following the oil spill resulting from the allision between 𝑽𝒐𝒙 𝑴𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒂 & 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒓 on 14 June 2024. Identification of oil slicks in affected areas facilitate deployment of oil recovery vessels and instruments particularly for spills in areas which are harder to spot at the surface level. MPA and Meteorological Service Singapore officers and our Institutes of Higher Learning work together to model tidal and wind conditions. Upon detection, vessels towing current busters, supported by drones, and skimmer systems, are deployed to collect the oil. Current Buster Systems consist of a boom with skirt that extends below the water surface to corral and consolidate oil on the water surface to be more easily collected, while skimmer systems utilise craft-towed booms to corral oil on the water surface and a skimmer to “lift” the oil off the water surface into storage tanks onboard vessels. While 3,100m of boom was earlier planned, a total of 3,400m of booms have been deployed. Containment booms, which are large floatation devices used to create a barrier to trap and isolate spilled oil, help further spreading of oil slicks and facilitate recovery. Absorbent booms, made of oleophilic materials that absorb oil they come into contact with, have also been deployed along stretches such as East Coast Park, as well as preventatively at biodiversity-sensitive areas at Chek Jawa, Coney Island and Pasir Ris Park which remain unaffected. The northern part of Pasir Panjang Container Terminal, where the spill started, has also been cleared of oil slicks at sea. On shore, vacuum pumps are deployed to remove surface oil, and trained personnel donning Personal Protective Equipment are removing oil contamination on the beaches. A bulk of the oil-stained sands along beaches have been cleared, including the beaches on St John’s, Lazarus and Kusu Islands, and thorough cleaning of rock bunds has begun. In addition, Singaporean authorities are in touch with our Malaysian and Indonesian counterparts to cooperate on efforts to address impact of the spill. Many thanks to colleagues from Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore, Ministry of Transport, Singapore, MPA, National Environment Agency, National Parks Board, PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency, Sentosa Development Corporation, Singapore Food Agency, Singapore Land Authority (SLA), Oil Spill Response Ltd, T&T SALVAGE LLC, SINGAPORE SALVAGE ENGINEERS PTE LTD, Avetics Global, Skyscapist Pte Ltd, Skyports Drone Services, Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP), ST Engineering Geo-Insights, Station Satcom, entrepreneurs, volunteers and members of public for the close cooperation over the past few days as we work on cleaning up the remaining spillage. https://lnkd.in/gBrnsDAT

Last week, Avetics assisted The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in establishing full scale #methanol bunkering capabilities. Avetics #drone supported The Emergency Operations Centre at MPA's control room. Equipped with volatile organic compound detector and infrared camera, our drone supervised the ship-to-ship bunkering operation for any methanol leaks and flames in the event of any accidental leak happened. The operation progressed smoothly, and now the Port of Singapore is a step closer to provide larger volumes of low- or zero- emissions marine fuel.
