The Strong Nations for Africa Programme 2024 has successfully concluded in Singapore this week! Over the past week, our 18 participants from 9 countries in Africa engaged in robust discussions and immersive learning experiences at the Institute of Technical Education. They explored various industrial parks, gaining insights into Singapore's approach to fostering a supportive business environment and encouraging entrepreneurship. Participants also explored Singapore’s residential heartlands on their own, gaining valuable insights into how housing and communal spaces are designed to enhance social cohesion and unity. Under the guidance of our expert facilitators - Don Y K Yeo, Jared Poon, Kee Hean Soh, Melody Hong, Yi Young Lam and CIG’s CEO Wei Neng Wu, participants deepened their understanding of the role of governments in building wise, prosperous and unified nations. As one journey concludes, another one begins. Our participants will be returning home with renewed purpose, armed with valuable knowledge and supported by a strong community of leaders built through the programme that are collectively committed to strengthening governance in their respective countries.

  • CIG delivered a virtual lecture to around 350 government leaders and officials from Indonesia about the Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI). Leveraging the CGGI framework, we discussed Indonesia’s performance relative to peer countries in the region and beyond, as well as the trends associated with Indonesia’s performance over the last four years. Attendees also shared their perspectives on “good” government and the capabilities that matter most for effective government. • A warm welcome to the second cohort of the Strong Nations for Africa Programme (SNFAP)! We are excited to be working with this great group of 18 senior government leaders from 9 countries in Africa. They have each demonstrated excellence and enthusiasm through completing a robust selection process, based on the highest standards of professional merit and anchored by a series of international assessment panels. The group has just completed the first segment of the SNFAP in Potchefstroom, South Africa - a week filled with knowledge activities, learning journeys and mutual exchanges with colleagues and experts. We love the energy, warmth and expertise of our participants, and look forward to continuing this journey with them in Singapore! Heartfelt gratitude to the Honorable Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Republic of South Africa, who spoke at the SNFAP opening ceremony and emphasised the importance of working together to nurture a culture of continuous learning and ensure the development of public sector leaders. Our CEO Wu Wei Neng also affirmed the importance of strong and resilient nations in Africa and the crucial role of government. A special thanks also to our partners African Association For Public Administration and (AAPAM), the DPSA of South Africa and North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit for your collaboration and partnership!

  • The Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG) is thrilled to be back in Lusaka (Zambia), especially with the delightful cooling weather. This time, we're eager to forge a new partnership with the Anti-Corruption Commission Zambia (ACC) and reconnect with the National Prosecution Authority (NPA). We had the privilege of working with nearly 70 incredible public sector leaders from both organisations. The goal for both workshops was to build robust organisations founded on trust, leadership, and integrity With the ACC, we conducted a four-day workshop to bolster leadership capability development and share international anti-corruption policies and tools. Similarly, our seven-day workshop with the NPA focused on driving organisational transformation as we delved into crucial areas such as building trust through leadership, optimising processes, and mastering stakeholder engagement and management. Both ACC and NPA are pillars of robust rule of law and integrity in Zambia. They play a crucial role in maintaining public trust, preventing corruption, and ensuring justice and equality. We are inspired by their dedication to these principles, which empower their organisations to serve the Zambian people with excellence. It was an honour working alongside the dedicated teams at ACC and NPA! #GoodGovernance #Integrity #AntiCorruption #Leadership

  • The CIG team made our first (and hopefully the first of many) visits to the beautiful National School of Government campus and offices in Pretoria, South Africa. We were delighted to see Principal Busani Ngcaweni and Chief Director Dino Poonsamy again, and to meet other senior colleagues and experts for the first time. Discussions between NSG and CIG, which have now spanned three continents, have emphasised the depth of alignment between the two organisations and our missions – to support public sector professionalisation and values, and strengthen state capacity and skills building. Following our earlier MOU signing in Singapore, the NSG and CIG teams discussed priority areas of collaboration and an action plan of concrete initiatives. Thanks also to our NSG colleagues for, inviting us, and participating and sharing views at CIG's masterclass on public sector capacity building and repositioning to meet changing demands. Your expertise and familiarity with opportunities and challenges in public sector training enabled a valuable and interesting discussion.

  • South Africa is set to play a significant international role in 2025 as the presidency of the #G20. As South Africa demonstrates and strengthens its impact in fostering international dialogue and cooperation, CIG is also excited to announce the start of an official partnership with its Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed on 1 August 2024 by DPSA's Director-General Yoliswa makhasi and CIG's Chief Executive Officer Wei Neng Wu. It establishes the framework for DPSA and CIG to work together on human resource and institutional development initiatives through capacity building programmes, international exchanges and the co-development of case studies and knowledge products. We look forward to supporting DPSA's meaningful endeavours as it advances its mission of building a professional, ethical and capable public service.

  • CIG was in Ho Chi Minh City earlier this week to launch the third run of the Modern and Effective National Governance Programme for Emerging Leaders (MENGPEL), together with our long-time partner, the Vietnam National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA). Over the next two months, senior leaders from central and provincial governments will participate in the four-segment training programme, focusing on key themes such as leadership, internationalisation and digitalisation, systems thinking, and building strong organisations. We also took the opportunity to meet with officials from the Ho Chi Minh City government, including its mayor Mr. Phan Van Mai, to explore potential collaborations. We are happy to continue our journey with the Vietnamese government, supporting them to strengthen government capabilities.
