Big thank you to Collin Furtado and Tech in Asia for the chance to share more about Search Funds. (For the search fund nerds, it is worthwhile to highlight the Garlic Equity Capital is the first "Traditional" Search Fund in Singapore, which was only made possible on the back of successes from pioneering "Self-Funded" Searchers such as Scott Lee. Credit where credit's due 😊.) #searchfund #entrepreneurship
One man’s loss is another man’s gain 💰. That old idiom seems to apply to the current state of Southeast Asia’s tech ecosystem. As layoffs, plummeting valuations, and drying venture funding continue to plague the sector, a new class of investors is emerging in the region. It was fascinating to learn more in detail about how turnaround funds and search funds operate. And how are they different from VC funds. These investors aim is to get a majority stake in targeted startups, mold them into profitable businesses, and then seek quick exits via acquisitions or public listings 📈. This idea actually came about from a conversation with a VC firm that were discussing about whether to adopt an acquisition strategy 💡 . But is turnaround investing truly as straightforward as it seems? And will it take off in Southeast Asia? This is something that I explore in this piece.
