Advance Research. Spark Innovation.

About us

The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) is a joint effort by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Established in April 2011, SMI develops strategies and programmes to achieve its mission with key focus areas in sectors such as port, shipping and maritime services. SMI charts the maritime research strategy and promotes greater industry-academia R&D collaborations to be undertaken in Singapore. Through a whole-of-government approach, SMI drives initiatives with industry-wide impacts to enhance the overall competitiveness of the local maritime industry; and to strengthen research and development (R&D) capabilities in support of Singapore as a global maritime knowledge hub. • At a meeting held yesterday with the management team and staff of the SMI-funded Centres of Excellence (CoE) and Programme Partners, SMI’s Deputy Executive Director, Dr Xinwei Chen, reaffirmed the critical role of R&D in transforming Singapore’s maritime sector, as we shift from efficiency-driven to innovation-driven growth. This is the key to strengthening our connectivity, productivity, resilience, and sustainability in the global maritime landscape. There is a Chinese saying “同舟共济” (crossing a river in the same boat), which reflects the spirit of mutual support and cooperation. Dr Chen encouraged the CoEs and Programme Partners to foster closer collaboration, strengthen cross-centre synergy, expand their research outreach, and anchor key maritime research initiatives for Maritime Singapore. Through an interactive discussion on each Centre’s 2025 Work Plan, the team explored new opportunities for partnerships and interdisciplinary research to drive impactful solutions for the industry. SMI will continue to deepen conversations and collaborations with the research community to steer innovation and transformation for the maritime sector. #SMI #Maritime #MaritimeSG #Research #Innovation #Collaboration #Partnerships #Synergy #Resilience #Sustainability #Transformation Maritime Energy & Sustainable Development Centre of Excellence (MESD) COE for Next Generation Ports SP Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety (CEMS) TCOMS - Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore Centre of Excellence for Autonomous & Remotely Operated Vessels Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC) iTrust SUTD Singapore Institute of Technology
