The economic cost of LGBTQ+ discrimination in Singapore is very real, and estimated to be between SGD 1.2 billion to SGD 2.8 billion. This is based on data driven research by Open for Business. We invite you to take a look at the report "The Economic Case for LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Southeast Asia", now available for download.
What’s the cost of exclusion - and the opportunity of inclusion? LBGTQ+ discrimination costs Singapore between 1.2 billion and 2.8 billion SGD (USD 882.3 million - 2 billion). Last September, we were in Singapore to launch our focus report, The Economic Case for LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Southeast Asia: Singapore, which highlights how creating LGBTQ+ inclusion can enhance the country's economic performance and global competitiveness. In this issue of Social Dimension, a publication of Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW), Kheng Leng Tok from Project X Singapore & Leow Yangfa from Oogachaga , both registered social workers, share their experiences of working with "invisible" communities in Singapore, namely sex workers and LGBTQ+ persons.
SASW Publications Standing Committee is pleased to present the January 2025 issue of Social Dimension on the topic of New Frontiers! In this issue of Social Dimension, we document and reflect upon some of the forward moves of Social Work. We have done much in terms of our tools and skills (e.g. data, podcasts, technology, expressive arts) and our practice fields (e.g. beyond our shores, climate). In addition, some of these waves of globalisation, climate change, dominion of technology cannot really be avoided. The articles have thoughtfully woven these challenges, giving us some learning points, reflections, questions, tips and inspiration to move forward. As we move into 2025, we wish you a Happy New Year as we all bravely move onward and forward. Enjoy reading and we would love to hear your thoughts and feedback too! Please email us at publications@sasw.org.sg.

During the Parliamentary debate on the Workplace Fairness Bill on 8 January 2025, MP for Nee Soon GRC, Louis Ng, spoke with conviction in favour of including sexual orientation & gender identity as protected characteristics under the proposed law. He ended his speech as follows: "I would like to end by thanking groups who have been fighting hard and tirelessly to ensure that we can live in a world without discrimination. In particular I thank groups that have been speaking up against workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. They include Pink Dot SG, Oogachaga, Same But Different, SAFE, Project X Singapore, Q Chamber, Action for AIDS Singapore (AfA Singapore) and AWARE."

On 7 & 8 January 2025, as Parliament debated the Workplace Fairness Bill in Singapore, despite the exclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics, the Minister for Manpower Dr Tan See Leng made the following assertion: "Let me state clearly that we do not tolerate any forms of workplace discrimination, including towards LGBT individuals." #workplacefairness #antidiscrimination #WFL

The workplace & employment related discrimination faced by the transgender community in Singapore is very real. Kudos to TransgenderSG & others for documenting such cases.
Trans and gender-diverse workers in Singapore face real and painful workplace discrimination 💔, and the current Workplace Fairness Bill — being debated this week 🏛️ — will do little to protect them. 💬 We hear from trans individuals about the challenges they’ve faced in the workplace, from invasive hiring practices to being denied access to toilets. These stories highlight the urgent need to include gender identity and sexual orientation as protected characteristics 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈. ✨ No one should have to choose between living as themselves and their livelihoods. Let’s work together for fair and inclusive workplaces and demand progress! 💪💼 #workplacefairness #transrights #transgenderSG
