Social Impact 2.0 - Developing the Leader in Leadership When the term "social impact" first emerged in 1969, it ignited a movement that gained mainstream traction in Asia around 2019. Over the years, we've defined social impact primarily in environmental and social terms, placing heavy emphasis on metrics and measurement. While this has guided us in the right direction, the progress has stagnated, with little meaningful advancement in recent times. The solution lies not in another impact framework or innovative finance mechanism, but in addressing the root of the matter - the carpenter, not just the tools. We've spent countless hours perfecting our Theory of Change, but have we paused to reflect on our own transformation? After all, an organization can only be as effective as the person leading it. We cannot give what we do not possess. Introducing Social Impact 2.0 - Developing the Leader in Leadership. It's time to elevate our game and invest in the change that starts from within. Without inner transformation, the Captain of the boat can only steer so far. Let's focus on empowering the changemakers behind the impact, because true, lasting change begins with the self. Are you ready to take social impact to the next level? Join us at https://lnkd.in/g96uh9gS at our upcoming TBNA Conference in Singapore as we explore this profound shift. #SocialImpact2_0 #LeadershipDevelopment #InnerTransformation #ImpactLeadership #ChangeFromWithin #LeadershipMatters #HumanCenteredImpact #PurposeDrivenLeadership #TransformationalLeadership #NextLevelImpact #TBN #TBNA #TBNAsia Dorothy Ching Melvyn Mak Jeremy Han Tim Tan

Turning the Poverty Pyramid on its Head: The Acton Institute’s Poverty Inc. is a full-length documentary about the fatally flawed poverty industry. Despite largely good intentions, billions and billions of dollars of aid have not helped the poor. What the rest of the world needs to climb out of poverty are things we take for granted in the industrialized world: the rule of law, private property, and opportunities for entrepreneurship. As Kris Mauren points out, “Nobody wants to stay poor and depend on other people. People have talents and abilities and they want to do for themselves. Many people are just excluded from the natural order of things and from the economy.” Does this mean we discourage giving? No, it means that we transform our giving because the current paradigm doesn't work. Let's take the case of a Rwandan egg farmer in Poverty Inc. He was just getting his business started when a well-meaning American church decided to send free eggs to his starving countrymen. Overnight, the local entrepreneur found himself unable to sell his own goods in the market, and though locals benefited for a short time, when the church turned its philanthropic attention elsewhere, it had driven the farmer out of business and inadvertently crippled the local egg economy. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson said, “Our aim is not only to relieve the symptoms of poverty, but to cure it and, above all, to prevent it.” In 2024, poverty remains the biggest issue facing the world (UN). Status quo is not working. Human flourishing is limited, if not impossble in the face of poverty. Time to disrupt the traditional models that typically only addresses the symptoms of poverty, ie: providing access to material necessities. To forge an effective pathway out of poverty, we need to enable social mobility, evolve social entrepreneurship, and encourage social investments. To enable social mobility, we need to tackle inequality in our societies. Every individual should be equally empowered to succeed in life without being unfairly strangled by the lack of social mobility. Social entreprenership is not new, however, even after so many years, the infrastructure to support social enterprises remains lacking. Our understanding and appreciation for social enterprises needs to evolve for them to succeed. By combining profit-making with a social mission, social enterprises address poverty through innovative business models to attain sustainable solutions. Moving away from traditional investments to social investments like impact investing has proven to be a challenge, mainly because people are hung up on the question of "concessionary returns". Ultimately, that is the wrong question. The right question should be, "what are your values?" When values are aligned with purpose, social investments are a clear winner. 𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐱 𝐈𝐭? Blended finance and other social finance tools have been hailed as game-changers in development finance, promising to fill the financing gap for impactful projects. However, despite the hype, these tools have struggled to gain traction, and their promise remains largely unfulfilled. Was the dream too good to be true? One major issue lies in the design of these instruments. They often assume that philanthropic capital should be used to mitigate risk for private investors, with the expectation of drawing in more private capital. However, from the philanthropist’s perspective, their capital shouldn’t be used to de-risk investments for private investors. This approach has prioritized the generosity of philanthropists over aligning with the values of private investors. Even mechanisms like first-loss capital aren't straightforward—while gains are shared, losses are borne by the philanthropist. Is relying on philanthropic funds to mobilize private capital the fairytale ending we hoped for? Or is it time to redesign these instruments to ensure a more equitable arrangement for all parties involved? Let’s rethink the way we structure blended finance and explore how we can create solutions that truly balance the interests and values of both philanthropists and private investors. Redemptive Philanthropy: Transforming the Way We Give 🤝🏼 Most people operate with a scarcity mentality—"I win, you lose." Society conditions us to be competitive, to tip the power dynamic in our favor so that we win and control. This mindset often spills into philanthropy, where giving becomes more about the giver—feeling good and exerting influence—than about genuine impact. Over time, we’ve seen a shift to an abundance mentality—"win-win." Here, philanthropists engage in trust-based philanthropy and unrestricted giving, focusing on "doing good." But is "feeling good" or even "doing good" enough? Does it truly benefit the recipient or advance the social cause? Enter Redemptive Philanthropy—an "I serve, we win" approach. Redemptive philanthropists go beyond traditional giving. They seek to restore and renew, bless others, and give of themselves in ways that transform both the giver and the recipient. Alongside capital, they bring humility, gratitude, and acceptance to the table, leveling the power dynamic and turning the traditional pyramid on its head. In this model, the redemptive philanthropist is here to serve, elevating social enterprises and nonprofits to the highest levels of human flourishing and unlocking their full potential to pursue their social causes. Beyond "feeling good" or "doing good," the redemptive philanthropist understands that the true essence of philanthropy is the love of humanity—love that transforms both the giver and the receiver. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐔𝐬? Most people don't think about the logistics that bring food and products to their doorsteps. However, these supply chains are often vulnerable to exploitation of the weakest links, who tend to be destitute. Consider the poor farmer at the beginning of the food supply chain, the factory worker, the cotton picker, or the child scavenging for plastic bags in piles of rubbish – their voices are rarely heard. For a long time, exploitative labor practices, discrimination, inequality, lack of worker rights and protection, environmental injustice, and a lack of transparency were rampant in supply chains focused solely on shareholder value and low consumer prices. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 Values-based supply chains incorporate ethical, social, and environmental concerns, addressing systemic issues such as poverty and inequality. This model shifts the focus from shareholders to stakeholders, prioritizing value creation throughout production, distribution, and consumption. It emphasizes sustainability and social responsibility at every step. Because getting your products fast and cheap is no longer good enough. Humanity matters, and it includes everyone, including that poor child from the slums. Join us at the upcoming TBNA Conference to explore how we can transform supply chains for the better.
