A rapid investigation of the state of the #NHS was recently undertaken by Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham OM KBE PC FRS, and concluded that "the NHS is in critical condition, but its vital signs are strong". Whilst the assessment of the NHS is stark, Lord Darzi emphasises some of the key remedies that can help address these challenges. Vista Health's Tom Hampshire highlights some of the key solutions that can help deliver better services, and secure its future for generations to come.
What a tough but compelling read Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham OM KBE PC FRS, and a true call to action for everyone determined to see the NHS delivering the best outcomes for the UK population from the substantial (but finite) resources we have. Reform of the NHS will be crucial but needs to be very carefully thought through. With household economic challenges and inequity, never have the NHS principles of free at point of delivery / publicly funded been so important. However, to deliver better value healthcare we must be prepared to learn from healthcare systems elsewhere in the world (and some excellent local pockets of practise in the NHS!) that: 1. Empower all care professionals to contribute to their full potential 2. Truly leverage data and technology to give actionable insights and automate processes 3. Partner with pharma and life sciences companies, leveraging their capabilities and making them an accountable part of the solution 4. Integrate patient experience, learning from the best customer-centric organisations 5. Intervene earlier in disease management, so people can avoid illness and remain healthy and economically active Let’s be optimistic and ambitious, but approach this with humility and great care.
