At AdvocAid, we take this moment to express our heartfelt appreciation for the individuals and organisations that stand with us in advocating for the rights of women and girls incarcerated in Sierra Leone. Our mission is not one we can accomplish alone; it requires the unwavering support and collaboration of local, regional, and global stakeholders. We are proud to rally behind Mary Lawlor as she prepares to present her latest report at the UN General Assembly on October 17, 2024, focusing on Human Rights Defenders and the Sustainable Development Goals. Together, we are committed to ensuring that poverty does not become a pathway to women's incarceration and that no one is left behind. Thank you for your continued support as we strive for a more just and equitable world. Let's keep advocating for change! https://lnkd.in/dVwxYF9c

In #SierraLeone, the poor & most vulnerable members of society are also the most susceptible to jailing as a result of petty offences, including loitering. AdvocAid Sierra Leone is working to decriminalise #poverty, arguing that these laws push people further into hardship. . . . On 17 October, I'll present my latest report on Human Rights Defenders & the Sustainable Development Goals at the UN General Assembly. Until then, I am sharing stories of HRDs around the world who work tirelessly to advance the #SDGs in their communities & ensure that no one is left behind. #HRDsAndSDGs #UNGA79

Next to it, the text reads “In Sierra Leone, AdvocAid is working to "decriminalise poverty" by challenging laws that unfairly target vulnerable people, like street traders and persons engaged in sex work and prostitution, and often trap them in a cycle of poverty. Many of those affected are women, who lose income while in prison, making it harder to care for their families. In 2022, AdvocAid took their fight to the West African Court, arguing these laws punish the poor unjustly. The case is ongoing.” Next to the text is a black and red illustration representing hands behind bars.

🌿 Important Announcement from AdvocAid Sierra Leone - Radical Rest Week🌿 In our relentless pursuit of justice and support for women and girls needing legal interventions, we recognise the importance of self-care and reflection. That's why we take a one-week break from all operations, August 11th–18th, 2024. We understand the emotional, mental, and physical toll of advocating for the rights of those who often go unheard. Rest is essential for us to recharge and refocus our energies on the vital work that lies ahead. As Ovid wisely said, “Take rest; A field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.” Thank you for your understanding and continued support. Together, we will return rejuvenated and more committed to amplifying the voices of those we serve. 💪🌺 #AdvocAid #SelfCare #HumanRights #WomenEmpowerment #RestToRejuvenate

A cross-section of AdvocAid staff, led by our Executive Director, recently paid a visit to Commissioner Simitie Lavaly to congratulate her on her reappointment as Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission by the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone. Our Executive Director highlighted that this reappointment serves as a validation of the incredible work Commissioner Lavaly is doing to advance human rights issues. Commissioner Lavaly expressed her gratitude to the team and used the opportunity to reflect on the journey of AdvocAid. She shared insights into how AdvocAid was founded in recognition of the dire need for legal representation and holistic support for women and girls in post-conflict Sierra Leone. Commissioner Lavaly emphasized that our work remains critical to this day. We are immensely proud of Commissioner Lavaly's achievements and are inspired by her continued dedication to human rights. Together, we will keep striving for justice and equality for all. #HumanRights #AdvocAid #SierraLeone #JusticeForAll #WomenEmpowerment
