IND vs SA Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024 Final: India wins by 7 runs, clinches the World Cup after 17 years

We are into the presentation ceremony. South Africa receives the runner-up medal before Indian players receive the winner’s medal. 

Virat Kohli, the player of the match in the final, announces this was his last T20I match.

Emotional scenes here at Barbados. Hardik Pandya is in tears. Rohit Sharma is in tears! It is a moment to savour for the Indian team. 

Save a thought for South Africa too. It had the contest in its bag until Jasprit Bumrah pulled it back for the Men in Blue.

Hardik Pandya to bowl. SA needs 16 off 6 balls. Miller on strike. WICKET! That’s GONE! Has Suryakumar Yadav has just pulled off a catch for the ages? Looks clean, and he has just pulled India in front. He is at long off, takes it inches inside the boundary and goes outside the line, doffs the ball up into the air, comes back in and takes the catch.

Marco Jansen is the new batter. He gets a single to deep covers. Miller clips the fourth behind square and gets another run. A single for Jansen to long on. A single for Miller with a pull.

Bumrah into the attack. An inside edge for Miller to deep fine leg, one run. Klaasen picks two runs and gets to a half century in just 23 deliveries. That’s the fastest in a T20 World Cup final. A single to deep square leg on the fifth delivery.

Axar to Klaasen, FOUR! In the slot and Klaasen picks it down the ground. Two back-to-back wides to follow. SIX! Klaasen gets across and slog sweeps this over mid wicket. This one hits the roof. SIX MORE! This one over long on, Klaasen goes deep into his crease and smacks this 103m. FOUR! Chips this one over covers. Klaasen has taken the game away from India. Two runs off the final delivery makes it 24 off the over.

Kuldeep for his last over. Miller flicks through mid wicket and runs two. Miller sweeps the third to deep square for a single. Klaasen punches to deep mid wicket and takes a single. FOUR! Miller swipes off his backfoot and breaches the fence. SIX! Miller picks the short delivery and pummels this over mid wicket.

Arshdeep back into the attack. Klaasen pulls this length ball to deep square for a single. FOUR! De Kock shuffles across and hooks Arshdeep over the short fine leg fielder. WICKET! The change in field works, de Kock goes for another hook and picks the fine leg fielder.

David Miller in at No. 6. He gets off the mark with a single to fine leg. Two runs for Klaasen to finish the over.

Kuldeep to de Kock, one run to deep covers with a cut shot. SIX! Slightly wide from Kuldeep and Klaasen picks it over covers, deep into the stands. A single with a sweep next. De Kock is beaten on the final delivery trying to cut.

Ravindra Jadeja is the new bowler. Klaasen hits through covers off his back foot, one run. ALMOST! De Kock pulls and the ball falls just short of deep mid wicket. SIX! In the slot and Klaasen hammers it down the ground. Slightly wider now from Jadeja, Klaasen cuts to deep covers for a single. De Kock tucks the fifth towards mid wicket with soft hands and completes two runs. A single to end the over.

Hardik Pandya comes in place of Kuldeep Yadav. He starts with three dots to surprise Klaasen. SIX! Short and wide, Klaasen crunches it over sweep cover for a six. Hardik bowls a front foot NO BALL! QDK hits it high, only manages a single as he fails to capitalise on the free hit. 10 off this over as South Africa is 81/3 halfway though.

Axar Patel continues. Patel to Stubbs, SIX! This duo is looking very dangerous for India at the moment. Axar keeps it on good length but the lanky Stubbs sweeps it over deep backward square to start the over with a maximum. A couple of singles bring Stubbs back into the strike. OUT! Stubbs goes across in an attempt for another sweep and Axar cleans him up with a full ball. Big wicket for India to break this dangerous partnership.

Heinrich Klaasen gets a single off the pads. 9 off this over. 

Kuldeep Yadav continues. FOUR! Stubbs shimmies down the track to hit the overpitched delivery down the ground for a boundary. SIX! What a hit! Another full ball, in the slot and QDK bends his knees and clobbers it over deep mid-wicket for a massive six. 

Axar Patel with his second over. A couple of singles in the first two balls to start the over. FOUR! Stubbs brings out his slog sweep to find the fence at deep mid-wicket. A good recovery from Axar who leaks just a single from the last three deliveries. 

Spin from both ends. Kuldeep Yadav to bowl the last over of the PowerPlay. A couple of singles and as many doubles fetch six off the first four deliveries. FOUR! Kuldeep bowls an overpitched delivery, QDK crunches and finds the gap backward point. 10 off this over as South Africa manages 42/2 in the PowerPlay.

Axar Patel comes in place for Arshdeep Singh. A dot to start the over as Axar uses his pace to cramp Stubbs. FOUR! Width was on offer and Stubbs pounced on the outside off the delivery to crack it for a boundary at deep backward point. FOUR! QDK this time. He read the line quickly and placed it over the extra cover. 10 off this over. 

Jasprit Bumrah continues from the other end. Bumrah to QDK, FOUR! Angling away for the left-hander and QDK guides it past the slip for a boundary. He gets a couple in the next delivery after driving the full ball over deep extra covers. Just two off the last four deliveries as eight come from this. 

Arshdeep Singh continues. De Kock hands the strike to Markram with a single off the first delivery. Full ball on off, Markram tries to squeeze the ball through backward point, a dot. OUT! Arshdeep strikes from the other end! He cuts short the South Africa skipper’s stay in the middle. Keep it away from the batter and Markram edged behind while trying to drive.

Tristan Stubbs, the new batter in at no. four, gets off the mark straightaway with a single. Arshdeep to de Kock, HUGE APPEAL FOR EDGE! Keeper Pant is confident as Rohit takes a review for a caught behind. But there was a huge gap as QDK survives. Just three off this over. 

Jasprit Bumrah from the other end. de Kock is beaten before he manages a single off-the-pads for leg byes. Bumrah to Hendricks, OUT! BOWLED! What a ball! A brilliant delivery which shapes out to clean up Hendricks’ off stump as Bumrah gives the first strike to India.

Skipper Aiden Markram is the new batter in at number three. FOUR! Ah, a cracking shot by Markram to get off the mark with a boundary. Two dots to end the over as five come from the second over. 

Arshdeep starts over the wicket, Hendricks has the strike. A full ball, inswinger, Hendricks taps as a dot to start the over. Arshdeep to Hendricks, EDGED! But did not carry to keeper Pant. This is it swings away for the batter but bounces just before the keeper. Hendricks gets a leg byes single. de Kock gets off the mark with a single in the fifth delivery. FOUR! Hendricks pounces on the short flat ball outside off as the batter cracks it through point for the first boundary. 6 off the first over.

Here we go! Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock walk in the middle. Arshdeep Singh has the new ball.

Nortje to bowl the last over. He starts off with a wide outside off to Dube. Full and whipped away to deep midwicket for a single by Dube. One more for Hardik at long-off as he can’t put the full toss away. FOUR! Misses the yorker and hammered past mid-on by Dube to the boundary. OUT! Dube has to go. 

Jadeja comes in and slices the ball over point for a couple. 

OUT! Jadeja slices this high in the air and brilliantly taken by the mid-off fielder off the last ball of the innings. India finishes with 176/7, which happens to be the highest team score in a T20 World Cup final.

Jansen with the ball. Angling away outside off to Kohli, he misses a drive and South Africa goes upstairs to check for a caught behind. However, called a no-ball for overstepping. Kohli steps out next ball and misses an expansive pull. FOUR! Full toss on the pads and put away to the square-leg boundary for four runs by Kohli. Slapped down the ground next ball for a couple more. SIX! Massive hit by Kohli and that has gone miles over deep midwicket. In the slot and Kohli absolutely bludgeoned this one. OUT! Slower one and Kohli has pulled this straight to the long-on fielder. 

FOUR! Hardik is greeted with a welcome stroke of luck first ball. He gets a top edge on the pull and the ball goes behind the keeper for a boundary. 

Virat Kohli c Kagiso Rabada b Marco Jansen 76 (59b 6x4 2x6)

Rabada bowls out. SIX! Outside off and Kohli finally breaks the shackles with a six over long-on. FOUR! Short and pulled away by Kohli to the deep square-leg boundary. He steps out next ball and flicks this through midwicket for one more. This a full toss wide outside off and an extra for India. Finally a good over for India, 16 from it and that’s also 150 up for India. 

Nortje to begin proceedings at the death. Three singles off the first three deliveries. A single for Kohli and that brings up his fifty off 48 balls. FOUR! Dube makes room outside off and cuts this to point boundary. 

Shamsi comes back. Kohli is just unable to fetch the boundaries. Backs away outside leg-stump to launch this straight to the deep midwicket fielder for a single. FOUR! Slog-sweep from Dube and he fetches a boundary in the deep midwicket region. Punched down the ground by Dube for a single to end the over. 

Jansen again. SIX! Stand and deliver from Dube. He stands tall and clubs this over long-on for a maximum. Kohli steps out and pulls to deep midwicket to end the over with a single. 

SIX! Rabada comes back and Axar greets him with a maximum down the ground. That’s 100 up for India in 13.1 overs. Kohli steps out, Rabada goes short in reply and this goes over the batter’s head. Wide ball called for height. 

OUT! Direct-hit at the bowler’s end and Axar is short of his crease. Kohli flicked this off his pads, and de Kock picked it up and took aim at the stumps at the non-striker’s end with perfection. 

Shivam Dube is the new man in. 

Axar Patel run out (Quinton de Kock) 47 (31b 1x4 4x6)

Nortje returns. Just five runs from the over, including a wide down leg-side. India will need to accelerate now, with the run rate 7.53. 

Shamsi continues. Axar misses the sweep right in front of the stumps but he is lucky to get an inside edge on that . Just three singles off the first four deliveries. The partnership is now worth 51 runs. SIX! Slog sweep by Axar and he just gets the ball over the long-on fielder and fetches a maximum. 

Jansen comes back. Leading edge for Axar first ball and he gets a single at deep third-man. Just four singles off the first four balls. Dabbed to deep third by Axar for one more. Drifting down leg-side and wide ball called. Pulled to short-fine for one more by Kohli to end the over. 

Tabraiz Shamsi for the first time today. Starts off with a wide. Kohli continues taking single. Shamsi attacking the stumps. No room allowed. Kohli pushes the ball behind square leg and steals a double. Sweeps towards midwicket and takes another double. 

Maharaj is back for his third. Both Kohli and Axar aren’t looking in a hurry. Focus on strike rotation. In the slot and Axar once again takes out the slog sweep and it goes for a SIX! Superb hit. Nine runs from the over. 

Markram continues. Strike rotation continues between the two. In the slot for Axar and he slog sweeps it for a SIX over midwicket boundary. Another attempted sweep, didn’t time it well but gets a single. 10 runs from the over. 

Anrich Nortje is here. Kohli pushes the ball towards deep point for a single. India has switched to conservative mode after three wickets fell in the PowerPlay. Not many attacking shots. Slower bouncer and Kohli pulls for a single. Four singles in that over. 

Aiden Markram brings himself in. Axar takes a single on the first ball. Kohli gives him the strike back on the next ball. Three singles in three balls. Not much spin out there so far. India dealing in singles. Six singles in that last over of PowerPlay. 

Rabada again. SKY cuts towards deep third and takes a single. Kohli pushes towards mid off and steals a quick run. OUT! SKY is gone. Length ball and SKY looks pull over fine leg but is caught in the deep. He goes for 3(4).

Axar Patel in at number five. Pushes the first ball towards midwicket and starts off with a four. Short ball, Axar cuts, slight misfield by the fielder at point and he gets a single. 

Maharaj again. Kohli drives, ball was in the air for a while, towards long off and takes a double. Short ball and this time Kohli slaps the ball past cover and gets a boundary. Six runs off the over.

Rabada into the attack. Kohli lets the first ball go to keeper. Defends the second ball. Pushes the third ball towards mid on, no run. Hits the ball towards extra cover and takes a single. Suryakumar Yadav is the new man in. Defends the first ball. Lofts the next ball, JUST over mid on. They run a double. A close call. 

Keshav Maharaj from the other end. Rohit cuts and and it goes between first slip and short third for FOUR. Rohit takes out the reverse sweep and hits in the same region for same result! Defends the third ball. Sweeps and is caught! Rohit is gone. He sweeps straight to square leg fielder inside circle. South Africa strike early. Rohit is out for 9(5).

Rishabh Pant in at number three. Pant sweeps and ball goes in the air and is caught by de Kock. Umpires are having a chat but South Africa is celebrating. Doesn’t seem to be a bump ball. Pant has to go for a two-ball duck. 

Jansen to Rohit, pushes the ball towards leg side and takes a single. Kohli on strike. Wide outside off and Kohli drives the ball past extra cover for FOUR! Full on the pads, and Kohli flicks the ball towards square leg for another boundary. And another drive towards cover and takes a double this time. Lets the ball go. Good length outside off. Drives straight and ends the over with a FOUR! Terrific start for India and Kohli.

Done with India’s national anthem. South Africa follows.

Suryakumar Yadav - Playing in the final is not easy. Easy to say it’s just another game, there is pressure. But if there is no pressure, there is no fun. Excited by my role. Have always enjoyed it. Wind direction plays a big role here. Know what my strengths are and back myself. Back of the mind, it feels really good to know I have a good record against SA but you have to start afresh on the day.

Rohit Sharma: We’re going to bat first, looks a good pitch. We’ve played one game here, the scores have been really good. Just about understanding individual roles, it’s important to remain calm and play it like it’s another international game against a good team. We’re going unchanged.

Aiden Markram: Would’ve batted first as well, looks very dry. But we get first crack with the ball so hopefully we can do well. At times we haven’t been at our best but we’ve still managed to win. We want to be as close as possible to perfect. There’s absolutely no pressure on us, we’ve never been in a final and we just want to enjoy it. Same team for us
