Switzerland vs Italy Euro 2024 highlights, round of 16: SUI 2-0 ITA; Italy knocked out of Euros

Switzerland has knocked the defending champions out in a powerful and dominant display!

Frueler’s half volley from the edge of the box goes miles over the post.

Cristante plays a dink into the box for Zaccagni who heads it to Scamacca but his first touch finish inches away from goal struck the post. Italy is still trailing by two goals. Schocking!

Switzerland on the front foot again as it passes around Italy’s box in a commanding nature. The Swiss seem to be too good for the Azzurri on this occassion.

Euro 2024: What happened the last time Italy conceded a goal in a knockout fixture of Euros?

Italy was left shocked when Remo Freuler opened the scoring for Switzerland against it in the round of 16 clash of Euro 2024 at Frankfurt in Germany on Saturday.

Switzerland has completely dominated the first half in all departments and will not be thrilled with its one goal cushion because it could have bigger lead looking at the plethora of chances it created in front of goal. Italy needs to regroup and come up with a better attacking plan heading into the second 45 or it will have an early knockout in Euro 2024! 

Rieder takes a freekick from the right as he curls it in perfectly into the near post but is met by an even more perfect diving safe by Donnarumma.

El Shaarawy makes a late tackle on Schar and is awarded a yellow card.

Shaqiri is seen warming up and maybe he will get into the game in the second half!

Switzerland breaks into a quick attack as Vargas plays a pass into the box meeting Freuler’s run into the box who was unmarked as he finished it into the near post!!!!

Barella pulls back and slots a long ball into the box for Cristante but the ball bounces a but ahead and into the keeper.

Embolo is through on goal from the left but hit far post attempts is easily saved by Donnarumma who was off his line.

Akanji plays a skillfull pass into the centre of Italy’s defensive half to Frueler but he misplaces his pass into the final third.

El Shaarawy wins a free-kick 27 metres away from goal as Italy gets a big chance. Di Lorenzo gets a dink into the box but is offside. Big chance goes begging for Italia.

Swizterland breaks into a counter as Vargas pushes the ball ahead and plays it to Embolo on the left but his cross for Ndoye on the far post goes straight into the keeper’s gloves.

Fagioli tries to find Chiesa deep in the right flank for Italy but the ball runs out of bounds.

Italy launches its first attack from the right as Cristante receives a threaded pass but his cut-back pass into the box is cleared away by Rodriguez for a corner which amounts to nothing.

Xhaka crosses it in from deep onto the left side of the post as Ndoye connects but the shot failes to find the net.

Switzerland plays a set-piece as it switches wing by squaring it. Rieder crosses it into the box from the right for Akanji but Italy clears it away.

Switzerland is trying and building on the left flank but Italy is not letting it cut into the final third. Aebishcer is fouled by Cristante. Barella goes down and is limping.

Swiss on the front foot again as Vargas crosses it from the left cleared away by Italy.
