Interview with X Series Composer Alexei Zakharov

The X-Universe is vast and beautiful. No matter where you are in the game, or what pursuits you are involved in, music is omnipresent. The music composed by Alexei Zakharov plays an integral part in creating the atmosphere of the universe and breathing life into its different locations and situations, from calm explorations to massive battles.

Today, we want to give you a glimpse into the mind of the artist behind the music, so we welcome Alexei for a short interview about his art and work for the X4 soundtrack. Enjoy!

Welcome, Alexei! How did you get into composing music?

I think that I always loved music. Even though none of my parents were musicians, music was always playing in our house. My dad was a fan of classic rock and was listening to Queen, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep… and little me was happy to be around that. My dad later told me that instead of lullabies, he was singing metal songs to me when I was born. Though I have never had a chance to get a proper music education, I was eager to play all musical instruments I saw, like old detuned and distorted sounding pianos at friends and relatives' houses, my granddad's broken balalaika (which I inherited), and every good sounding surface to use as a drum. When I grew up, I think that it was at the age of 13, my friend and I discovered our first music software, and I think that was one of the Trackers, probably Fast Tracker. There were many other software tools we tried back in the days, it was more out of the fun and I never thought that I would end up producing music professionally.

What are your biggest musical influences?

There have been many and they were changing throughout my life. As I have already said, I was really a fan of classical rock and I'm still listening to it. Also, some much heavier metal music. It always gives me energy, not always positive, but every energy and emotion is good for producing your own music. I also love to listen to some classical music: Sveridov, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov. Movie soundtracks too, but I am not a fan of modern soundtracks, when the sound is more important than the melody. Howard Shore is great in that regard, an amazing composer of an old school of soundtrack writing. As for games soundtracks, a lot are also way too generic these days. I can probably note Gareth Coker as one of the best composers in the games industry now. That guy rocks!

How did you come to create music for the X games?

It was a mix of luck and coincidence. Back in the day, I think it was the summer of 2003, I was already a fan of the X series and just on a whim decided to write an email to Egosoft, saying how much I love their games and how good the music in there was. I also mentioned that I am producing electronic music and would love to write something for them. A couple of days later, I received an answer from Bernd, the boss himself! I was shocked and happy at the same time, but he said that they don't really need any techno music, but that I am free to send whatever I have. I decided to write something completely new and after two days I had a track that I sent to him. He seemed to like it a lot and said that it will definitely end up being used in X2. This track was "Aurora" and you can find it on the X3: Albion Prelude soundtrack, which was released much later. After that, I composed several additional tracks like this and Bernd asked me to do music for a Rolling Demo, which was supposed to be released just a couple of days after his request. I composed four tracks for it on a very tight schedule, and the music was added to it just an hour before it was released. That was my first work for Egosoft. The rest is history.

Your music provides the X games with a strong identity. How do you explore the themes of the X-Universe musically?

I just play, explore and see myself... but trying to do that in small pieces. For example, we needed music for the HUB in our newly released expansion - X4: Timelines, I was just starting the game and making it run on a desktop for some time and was trying to imagine and feel what could fit each place there. After some time, I had a strict idea of what I should compose and how it would sound. After putting the tracks inside the game, I am also spending some time running around or just standing still and listening to the music and how it feels to be inside the game. Then I am showing the stuff to the team and listening to the feedback. That's my algorithm.

How do you approach your work on new X music? What does your creative process look like?

I have already partially answered that question in a previous one, but I can try to explain how it goes on a more global scale. On a global scale, it is always going very differently and sometimes even chaotic. Music production is spread throughout the whole development cycle. Since I am doing not just music, but the whole sound in our game, sound effects production and music production stages interchange with each other all the time. Sometimes it is hard to always change the way you work, but in other ways it helps to not be overly bored with doing the same stuff all the time. When it comes to the music composing itself, it is also coming very differently. Sometimes I just force myself to sit and write something, because I have to! But sometimes, I just manically wake up in the night and run to my studio PC to write a theme that just came to me in a dream. Music is such an unpredictable thing that it can get you in very uncommon places and you never know when exactly. And of course, these spontaneous tracks are the best. For example, track "Rise of the Protectorate" was composed like that. The idea of a vocoded robotized sounding choir came to me at night.

Do you compose only with electronic instruments, or do you also work with analog instruments?

I am mostly composing using hardware synthesizers and sampled orchestra. I own 6 synthesizers which I purchased during my career in Egosoft. Not everything at once, of course. My first purchase was a Virus TI, one of the most iconic modern synthesizers, which was sadly discontinued this year. It's one of my favourites for composing space-oriented music and I think that I will never ever get rid of it. Also, I own a couple of KORGs, and the last purchase was a Clavia Nord Stage 4. But if I need to enhance my tracks with live instruments, I contact my friends in the orchestra to record things for me. Whether it's a large-scale orchestra or just single instruments, it always sounds much better. Quite often I am also using real world sounds to enhance my music. For example, for the track "Mission Control" in X4: Timelines, I recorded the sound of my metal door. After working with that sound, I pitched it down and heavily effected it, it turned into this very ominous growling sound that you can hear throughout the whole track. That is just a small example of how these tracks become alive.

Which track that you have created for X are you most proud of and why?

I think that there is not one super specific one. Of course, I love what I do, but there is always room for improvement. We should never stop learning and evolve. So, I would leave that choice to our dear players and listeners.

Have you ever encountered a creative barrier while composing? How have you overcome those hurdles?

Of course, I have and that is a part of the creative work process, when you always have to do something new, but in a way, so that your audience will be happy and not disappointed. I think that is my main blocking factor, not to disappoint, and make it as good so the team and myself are happy with the results. But, as always, most of these blocks are mainly in my head and I tend to give them too much room. What helps? Hmm... maybe walking in the forest, or sitting on a bench at the river, always different stuff. But sometimes, the most helpful thing is just to force myself to sit down and just do it.

Are there themes or musical influences that you would like to explore further in the future?

We are always trying something new. Though in slow portions. But for the future, I would like to make a bigger step in changing music. It could become darker and much heavier, but of course, it will stay melodic.

What is your single most important advice for aspiring artists?

Don't start it, haha. It will take all of your time, heart, emotions and even eats you alive… and it is not guaranteed that you will become successful in any way and make you profit. But if you are not afraid, and have already decided to overcome all of this, it is your first step to becoming successful. Just remember how hard the road can be and that many famous composers were not actually famous during their lifetime. Many of them were unhappy and never believed truly in their work. Only much later have people acknowledged their genius. So, after saying this, my advice would be to believe in your work. Maybe today, nobody listens to it, but if you will be truly faithful to your job, there will be a time when it will be appreciated!

Besides creating music for a whole universe, what do you enjoy in life right now?

Oh, I don't have much time for anything else. Probably just playing games sometimes, since this is my first passion after music. Travelling to mountains, once a year. Mountains give me a lot of energy and inspire me a lot. I would say that this is my place of power.

Honestly, I would rate this game as "Mid" despite the fact I gave a recommend, but there is no option for that. Please prepare yourself for a long review, because there is a lot to cover. The reason why I rate this "Mid" is because while it's very appealing and fun, there are some glaring issues.

As a newcomer to the series, X4 being the first game, I think my review will be very fair without fan-bias. In addition to that, I began X4 during Cradle of Humanity at version 4.0. I'd also like to mention that the only reason I found this game is because I was searching for an "offline version of Eve Online", "space RTS games", and "single-player space shooters". This just happen to check the boxes I was interested in. However, I didn't do much research, I just wanted to play. Now, after over 1400 hours of playing, I will share my own research with you.

As I begin, I must absolutely ask you to be wary of the reviews with extremely high hours played. The reason why is because, X4 is a type of game where things happen in real-time. This means, a second spent in the game is a second spent of your real life, so it is a serious time waster. Now, I'll give an example, there is a ship that takes roughly 30 minutes to build. This means that people with extremely high hours played are actually spending most of their time "waiting" around until things get completed so that they can actually progress forward in the game. And it's not just building ships, it's literally everything you do, it takes so much time.

So, if you truly value your time, "Do Not Buy This Game." The above reason is why I am "Mid" and wouldn't recommend it to the average person just passing. X4 is a game where, if you are new to the series, it demands a lot out of you and in return, you may not get a lot back. Now, X4 checked some boxes, as mentioned above. With that, X4 does try to be a game that allows you to do a ton of things. While it can do a lot of things, it also will NOT do a very great job at it. Keep that in mind.

As a sandbox game, a "session" doesn't really end until you simply get tired of it. That said, you have to find your purpose to actually play. When X4 launched, there was only 1 gamestart, you are given 1 *terrible* "newbie" ship, a small sum of money, and then yourself. You figure out the rest by piddling around. Later on, and with the DLCs, better gamestarts were added to speed up the pace of "getting into the game" and helping provide guidance to your purpose to play the game.

Purpose, in X4, you can become whatever you want. Be a Trader? Pirate? Smuggler? Or your own Faction leader? You can do that. However, there are some things to keep in mind no matter what you choose, you have to be aware that the economy and state of your game session is largely impacted by you, the player. X4 is a universe that is resource starved, despite the fact it's a huge sandbox. Part of the reason is because of lore, though, it's mainly attributed to the fact that the "simulation" of X4 demands a huge amount of CPU resources. So, make sure your CPU is very strong because X4 will run very poorly if not.
-- Your impact? X4 is resource starved. While NPC miners, traders, stations do exist, they cannot do much alone to sustain themselves. Eventually, the factions will spiral downwards until they stop functioning, literally. They exist to give the player some kind of foothold until the player can get strong enough to supplement the NPC factions, and thus the entire universe.
-- In addition, there's a constant threat called the "Xenon" which is akin to Earth's mother nature. Xenon exist to "force" things to happen. Most players will wipe Xenon, but when this happens, the NPC factions will break down, eventually. That is because they don't really have anyone to fight. NPC factions do have war with each other, but it's not major enough to "force" things to happen. So, if you eliminate Xenon, you practically "won" the game, breaking down the NPC factions in the process.
-- Why do the NPC factions break down? The economy of the game runs on war, more importantly, stuff blowing up. You have to let Xenon exist for that reason, if you want to keep your game "alive". This also means, don't allow the factions to ally up, create as much division as possible between the factions, even though Xenon is their common enemy. By allowing stuff to blow up, you enable jobs for Miners, Traders, Stations, and obviously the Military. If nothing is blowing up, you disable the need for those jobs. You have a big factor in the game's Economy.

I better speak on the AI. The AI is rather troublesome to deal with. Firstly, the player AI and NPC AI operate at different levels. One example is responding to enemies. When NPC AI gets into trouble, like a Miner being attacked, an automatic distress beacon is sent and nearby forces will respond to it, saving the Miner. For the player, this isn't a feature, so you must manually locate them and send a security force.
-- X4 is a game that requires extreme micromanagement because everything is explicit. I'll give an example. Most ships have a natural command of "Hold Position". So, if one of your ships was being attacked, it will do absolutely nothing against the attacker. Turrets will respond to enemies, if properly set, and I do mean that they have to be properly set, otherwise, they won't. Regardless, you must manually tell your ship to fight back.
-- So you see, there are extreme layers to everything which requires extreme micromanagement and as mentioned, this eats a ton of people's time. Due to that, there are tons of buttons and commands everywhere for that reason. Everything takes so much just to get functioning the way you "expect" it too. Even then, sometimes they simply don't function the way you "want" them too. There are more things I could mention, however, there are more than enough reviews that speak on the AI, and trying to manage it.

Time, time is precious. If you want to even think about playing X4, then you must set aside extreme amounts of time. One of the biggest culprits, in addition to what I've already said, is the sheer amount of time needed to "learn" this game and how the "mechanics" of the game work. For a first-timer, it took a long time to learn the basics just to simply play and start having fun. The game DOES NOT do a good job of introducing you, as a new player, to the game. The learning curve is extremely high, even some "veterans" have struggled, if that tells you anything.
-- This is the TOP reason why I "Do Not Recommend" to just the average person. I would only recommend if they are a hardcore fan of the X games. Also, I would only recommend if you wanted a game like FreeSpace or Elite Dangerous, but wanted something much more. Again, the learning curve is very high, and the time required to do anything in the game is excessive that it would turn off a large majority of people.
-- Speaking of time, there is a device called "SETA" which speeds up the "in-game" time by 6x. Let that sink in for a second. This game requires so much "Time" to do anything that they decided to invent a function to "speed up time" so you won't get too bored "waiting" around for things to happen so that you can progress forward in the game. Think about that. That just sounds really weird, doesn't it?
-- Now, there's a special caveat I have to point out about that SETA. You have to "craft" it first. So, that means you have to find "materials" to "craft" it. Those parts required have a low drop rate too. But, there's more to it. You need to farm those parts from Xenon and Khaak. Khaak are like Xenon, except they don't ever disappear, they simply respawn after a while. Regardless, you have to burn a lot of time farming for SETA, and that can take hundreds of hours.

Just get mods to greatly improve the game

Almost 1200h played, what more can I say.

The game has it's flaws, but what it does well it truly excells at. You ever heard of EVE Online? This is basically EVE Offline. Fully simulated economy, meaning every ship that is built is made up of components produced from materials which where gathered somewhere, by either the player or an NPC.
This leaves countless opportunities to influence the development of the universe and the factions therein. Become an industrial magnate and fuel a specific factions economy, making sure to keep their shipyards stocked to help them win a war.
Play as a privateer, robbing and capturing mining/trading vessels to cut off a factions supply while turning a tidy profit.
Play as a mercenary, fighting on the frontlines, or be a partisan and attack the enemies logistics.
Be a trader and become filthy rich, profiting off of the countless wars by selling to all sides.
Decide to strike out on your own, fighting for everything you own and build your completely seperate, self sufficient empire to conquer the galaxy.
Combine any or all of these ideas, and many more which I have probably forgotten, to create almost endless replayability in one of the best open universe sandboxes ever made.
Add to that various plots which, while admittedly lacking in voiceacting talent and sometimes storytelling, can fundamentally change aspects of the universe, giving you yet more tools to influence the world around you.
Pros:
-Massive sandbox universe with many different races and over 110 sectors (including all DLCs)
-The ability to make as much or as little of a difference in faction politics as you wish
-Solid combat mechanics
-Custom starts to skip things done in other playthroughs/the early game, or to create more unique challenges
-Fully simulated supply/demand in a galaxy spanning economy with endless opportunities to make a difference/profit
-Large roster of ships, ranging from tiny (6m-10m) fighter craft up to massive 2km long dreadnaughts with (almost) everything between
-Large selection of unique ship equipment to tailor your vessel(s) to your needs and budget
-Optional ship modding
-Large powerscale, one can go from a lowly courier all the way to universally dominant megacorporation with a completely self sufficient supply chain and a vast military
-Large scale fleet battles for anyone that has always wished to take on the role of space admiral
-Many great overhaul mods available, many QoL mods also, resulting in a highly customisable gameplay experience

Cons:
-Pilot AI is acceptable at best, incredibly wonky at worst
-Fleet AI has similar problems (a lot of the time using the map to give individual commands to ships/groups leads to better results)
-AI wonkyness results in losses which sometimes feel unnecesary, so don't send a whole AI fleet into a large battle if you aren't able to replace any losses taken
-Voiceacting is not this games strength, it is often delivered rather dispassionately so while the storytelling itself is often not terrible, the voiceacting does detract from it significantly
-The UI, while it has improved a lot, is still sometimes rather confusing
-In the super late game performance can become an issue on weaker machines, especially if the player prefers to employ thousands of small ships instead of merely hundreds of larger ships (satelites in particular can become problematic, though the trade subscriptions mitigate this)
-Fleet managment, especially concerning the replentishment of losses, can be a little tedious

Neutrals:
-The game has a steeeeep learning curve. flying itself is simple enough, but figuring out what to do and how to do it can be difficult. NOTE: This has improved somewhat with the newer tutorials and the timelines DLC
-Many many ways to do similar things, with it often not being apparent to a new player which way is the best. imo this adds to the challenge and replayability, especially as logistics is such a large part of the game, but I can see how some players might find it frustrating. Suffice it to say that I recently (after about 1000h playtime) discovered a really neat way to organise ware distribution that I simply had not thought of, even though now it seems so obvious.
-Several quality DLCs available, all of which expand the universe and the ship/race roster.
-Take note that the newest DLC (Timelines) does not add as much to the sandbox universe. While it adds a couple of sectors and various unique ships to the sandbox, it mainly adds a seperate gamemode with a bunch of self contained scenarios. These can be great to experiment with/learn about different aspects of the game. For example managing a large fleet consisting of destroyers and many small ships without risking all the longterm progress these would represent in the sandbox.
-Bad native controller support. It is definetly possible to set up a controller to play the game properly, but the game is not designed around a controller

Stalled Metallic Microlattice production

I have attempted setting buy sell prices, pausing production and restarting and this just does nothing. What am I missing?
