What a disappointing multiplayer (Vent, rage, help)
I've beaten Dark Souls 1, 3, and Elden Ring. First time trying Dark Souls 1 multiplayer. Given 4 cracked red eye orbs around Undead Burg. Invade 4 times, each in Undead Parish, each against hosts that haven't even defeated Gargoyles.

Didn't realise PvP boils down to pretty much only backstabs. Tried parrying, didn't get a single parry off even though I tried timing it instead of spamming it. Tried dodge rolling and getting hits in when I see an opening, doesn't matter, host's weapon just does more damage to me than mine to them. Even when I try dodging the host's attacks, the phantom bleed build up on their weapon means I'm on a time limit and have to kill them soon before I die to bleed procs.

So I try fishing for backstabs to see if I can win at least one invasion. I do what one guy did to me and try to roll through the Host as they swing, meaning I'll be behind them and get backstab. Everytime I tried it though, I couldn't roll through the host and just ate their attack.

I know reds are supposed to be at a disadvantage when invading, but even if one of these hosts were an actual new player, the fact that I couldn't even get one kill is pathetic. The combat is nothing like Elden Ring's which is the only game I've gotten comfortable with the multiplayer.

Any advice? How do I successfully get backstabs off? What are the do's and don'ts of pvp? Thanks. Rant over

practice a lot and learn backstab. play ds2 for balanced pvp.

a lot of players that i invade who have elden ring hours never lock on and that makes them into an absolutely free kill. don't be like them.

your assessment of the pvp is correct -- it all revolves around backstabs. because they hard counter most things. stick with it if you like it -- you can get very fine at backstabs.

as for bleed -- if you roll through the hit that would otherwise pop the bleed, it cancels it. works in ER too actually.

Playing the game against mobs and then jumping into PvP your timing will be off because of the network connection. Also, experience in other DS games will not translate well, each game in the series is subtly different re: mechanics, timing etc. As others posted, going to have to keep at it to get gud... LOL, couldn't resist.

Find the honesty in your post refreshing. Think about it this way, maybe you made some newb's day by being his first invasion kill! I will never forget mine on the roof of Sen's Fortress.

DS1 PvP, among all the titles, punishes mistakes the hardest. Unlike DS3 and Elden Ring, you aren't going to pull through in an invasion unless you know what you're doing and you can see what your opponent is doing and counter it.

DS1 PvP is mechanically complex, and isn't just a moshpit like in Elden Ring. Elden Ring's PvP is the most casual-player friendly, because you can just use generic spam with good gear and pull through against anyone but the decent players.

If you really want to get into DS1 multiplayer, I strongly recommend looking up some videos about how latency works in DS1, how to space properly, and various other mechanics (and important counters) that will give you an edge in PvP. DS1 has the highest skill ceiling of all the games by far, and it shows.

Probably the most comprehensive guide at the moment, an all in one (almost) - but definitely covers most things and the important ones.

what this shard of a man said.
ds1 is a slower and more methodical game, so you need to know the methods to succeed.
that goes doubly for pvp.

Your poise matters a LOT in DS1, as it's always active unlike the later games, it's basically passive hyper armor. For this reason, none of the weapons in DS1 have actual hyper armor, your stagger resistance only comes from the poise stat on your armor pieces. (This also means that slow weapons like greathammers and ultra gs are trash as they don't give any extra stagger resistance, but I digress).

When starting a new character, you should always beeline Wolf Ring (+40 poise) ASAP, it makes an immense difference in both PvE and PvP. It can be acquired without fighting any bosses.

If your poise is low you'll be just chain stunlocked by both enemies as well as other players.

And if you have high poise, you just simply walk through the other player's attacks and then backstab them. That's basically DS1 PvP in a nutshell, and why very few people like it, nowadays.

PvP in Dark Souls 1 is pretty whack. I remember when I first got into this game again, a guy summoned me to fight Gargoyles and a low level GiantDad(Dad mask, Cleric Armor, and a Chaos Zweihander) one shots me.
But yeah, all in all, the fighting is slower and mistakes are much more punishing than Dark Souls 3 or Elden Ring.

Getting someone friendly to practice with helps a lot. If you are interested in trying more pvp you can add me.

Man... you actually reminded me of the old days. A friend and I would go to Oolacile arena and practice techniques and timings with each other.

Such nostalgia.
backstabs are an opportunistic move. if you expect to blatantly wheel around me, walk like a boss to my back and make a quick easy crit - there is a child-level counter to that which makes you backstabbed first. instead of moving away from you sidestep towards you and backpedal a bit - that puts me right behind you for a second, enough to take an advantage.

thus way if you getting backstabbed alot - perhaps you are too ambitious about pulling out a cheap backstab and you are getting punished for that. it will proceed to happen this way until you learn to respect the distance

Can recommend. I coop battled with my young son, and tried many of the weapons till we found what worked with our different play styles (he liked the uber swords, me the pokie ones...). He became very good at PvP, with only a little help from the practice dummy, as he called me.

Yes, there is technique to near success with backstabs, just don't fight the fight invaders want. If learning and it comes to it, use environment to cover your back. You get to choose where the fight occurs. Then invaders cry cry cry like the female dogs they are... (ಥ﹏ಥ)

about the damage, at low levels the damage is really trash, you can use +5 weapons for low level invasios, they match with with +0(unupgraded), that's mostly for burg/parish invasions. Or unupgraded fire weapons too, they are equal to +5

If you really wanna try some high level pvp instead of annoying some new players, go to oolacile township and just put your sign down by the bonfire with red soap
