sorry, to answer only now. Before I didn't recognize your respond. Probably interesting news for you.
The character I could restore with a trick: the save files are still on your local SSD - as long as the sync with Steam did not overwrite them. So, I opened the respective character with the same name completely new in the game. Afterwards I overwrote the new saving files with the correct old ones. Of course, you need to copy them to a secure point beforehand.
The files are named easily along the character numbers 0, 1, 2, 3. So it was quite simple. And it worked. Yeah!
The other point with the crashes: I faced the same problems like anybody else here. First starting with the fast travel within the game. Somehow I think they worked on that already. Moreover, I recognized that Core i7 is more stable in running the game than Core i9.

This is more concrete than mentioning the troubles only here.
I still like that game very much.
It's just nice and lovely.
