Catgirl's Questlist
Every Dream must eventually end...

Preclaimer
- This game was gifted to me through Curator Connect. Thanks to the developer for the key!

Considerung how easy it is, I've seen a lot of generic, low effort RPGMaker games out there. Hence, especially when adult content is involved, I usually don't have really high expectation. And so it was greatly refreshing to finally see a proper RPGMaker game again that easily managed to highly surpass those low expectations.

Gameplay & Quality
RPGMaker done right.

Catgirl's Questlis is a classic and simple turn-based 2D RPG. You run around in neatly crafted pixelart areas, solve puzzles, take on quests and fight a wide variety of the weirdest monsters you could dream of. And while you are not doing that you get to enjoy the decision filled multi-route story in a classic Visual Novel fashion.

Most of the time playing as Vera, Charm Witch as profession - or 'Boob Witch' as some of her companions lovingly call her - you can have a party of maximum three characters. The three main fighters which you will spend the majority of the game with each have their unique playstyle, fitting into different roles in battle and highly supporting certain sets of equipment and stat raising. All the characters in your party can be equipped by the player, learn new skills through leveling or story events and Vera herself can even upgrade her learned skills.

A wide variety of puzzles and minigames - like a casino, which for whatever reason even is story mandatory - help spicing up the constant fighting and running around looking for new hidden quests.

The graphical quality of the game is good - the VN parts, spiced up with occasional CGs, alone could make for a great game, the combat sprites are decently animated and even the pixelart of the overworld assets received quite a bit of custom love.

The voice acting too is better than I expected, despite me personally not liking English voice acting even from professionals in general. And the music has a couple awesome tracks fitting into their respective situations.

Though of course, Catgirl's Questlist isn't perfect. Besides generic, everyday flaws like a handful of typos or some minor mistakes here and there, the game is only partially voiced. Only the fixed main story and romance scenes are and even then there are quite a few situations where the intonation seems off, either from the dialogue's italic emphasis itself or what you'd logically expect to hear.

The CG artworks too are devided into the half that is high quality and the one that is far more simplistic, as if they were drawn from two different artists of differing skill levels or had to be rushed for whatever reason. Furthermore, some characters change their style on what feels like every single CG they appear on.

Other than that though, the game is highly enjoyable.

Content & Runtime
What can you expect from this game?
A both silly and comedic yet tragic and dark story about desire and the matters of the heart.

Vera, professional and highly successful Charm Witch who started the thrilling life of an adventurer, becomes witness of an inexplicable phenomenon - a lightning strike directly hitting the Elder Tree in the forest next to her home, in the midst of a bright, sunny day. Rushing over there she finds Téa, a paniced catgirl that mumbles weird stuff about being from another world.

In order to find clues about this phenomenon and a way to bring Téa back home, the two of them recruit new members to officially found a guild so that they may earn the king's respect and access to the royal library. And so their journey began, making their questlist longer and longer while slowly unraveling the mystery behind it all.

If only they knew, that some memories should better stay burried and that going home not always is the desirable option...

Despite its generally lighthearted comedic nature and heavily mature theme, Catgirl's Questlist delivers a captivating and thrilling story across five unique routes that can go into rather dark territory, albeit nothing too bad. All of these routes have two different endings - though which of those are "good" or "bad" endings ultimately is for yourself to decide. Playing all five routes - and in order of character appearance - is highly recommended to view all sides of the story, although the main storyline and events in the background stay mostly linear.

The characters are all well created, have distinct personalities and stories, as well as notable development throughout the events of the story.

Besides the main story there are several side quest stories which change based on your decisions and can be skipped altogether. Based on that, a thorough first playthrough can take between 15h and 30h of time, heavily depending on which of the three difficulties you play on and your commitment to side quests. All but story relevant boss battles can be avoided - but in doing so these forced battles become significantly harder due to your low level and equipment. The settings offer significant battle speed-up though.

After the first playthrough, the remaining runs for the other routes get reduced to 5-10h thanks to the NG+ mechanic, which not only allows you to carry over your level and equipment but also let's you skip the first 12 ingame days simply choosing what you would have to decide while finishing all quests within that time.

The main menu also features a gallery, where you can look at the 35+ CGs of the story (as long as encountered normally before or unlocked via a secret), though you are not able to switch through their variations.

The R18 DLC
Kitty-patootie.

As a bonus - or rather as a mandatory addition, considering the constant highly mature teasing of the base game - you can get the free R18 DLC for the game here on Steam. As stated by the developer, the game can be fully enjoyed without it though, personally speaking, adding it enhances the experience quite a bit instead of just adding dull hentai.

The DLC changes two scenes of the story to their adult version and adds a total of 9 intimate romantic scenes along the progression of the characters' romantic relationships on their routes.

Despite the mentioning of bi-sexuality in some heroines and the prominent existence of normal heterosexual couples outside of the main character cast - which apparently triggers some people - the relevant interaction between the main characters is solely Yuri, that is FxF.

The scenes are rather short but detailed (with a focus on the situation rather than the action) and highly believable, opposite to generic hentai. On the other hand, they are filled with a lot of fetish play too, including bondage, SM (fully consentual of course), food play and (completely refusable) futanari magic.

Conclusion
Is this game worth it?

For what it delivers, considering the asking price, it's a solid 'yes' from me. You get quite an impressive amount of enjoyable playtime out of it and can see a good example for what RPGMaker games can be like.
And if that does not convince you, remember - there will always be another Steam sale!
