Puyo Puyo has been one of my favorite action-puzzle games for over ten years now—especially for its unique concepts, stories, and designs altogether. The games within the Puyo Puyo franchise without a doubt usually exceed my expectations.

The key word being usually.

PROS:
  1. There are many lessons this game offers you right off the bat—far more than what the previous game/crossover within the franchise—Puyo Puyo Tetris—had to offer.
  2. There's a ton of new characters you may not have seen before if you only played Puyo Puyo Tetris.
  3. There's lots of new artwork added within the game—including some older artwork being up-scaled at a higher resolution
  4. Much like with Puyo Puyo Tetris, there is a large room for modding capability and tutorials on how to get started on doing such within the Steam Community forums and guides

CONS:
  1. Puyo Puyo Champions suffers from MASSIVE FPS drops in comparison to its predecessor, Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Myself—and even others on the forums with high-end PCs far surpassing the recommended technical specifications—have also reported significant dips in performance to a point where the only viable way to play the game is using the Fullscreen Window option instead of the any other Window setting you would expect to be functioning somewhat decently at least in the slightest bit.

NOTE: Even with the above settings, the game is hard-capped at 60 FPS with seemingly random fluctuations to 59 FPS and 61 FPS regardless if you have a 144hz monitor or not.
  2. It runs better on every other console.

Do I even need to say more than that?

NEITHER A PRO NOR A CON:
  1. There's new voice acting for the Japanese voices. I'm not a fan of it personally since I believe it takes away from the iconic attacks that every character, but this is completely subjective and is my personal preference.

CONCLUSION:
Make no mistake: if you're a fan of the Puyo Puyo series and/or if you want to learn the basics on how to actually get better at the game overall, then this Puyo Puyo Champions is absolutely perfect for you.

But for your own sake, get this game on literally any other platform if you are interested in improving your skills without having to deal with abysmal frame drops.
