Man had risen up against the vampires, overthrowing them in the lands they once called their own. For many centuries those vampires which survived were left starving, tortured by thirst, choking down dust and hidden away in the darkness. Until now, now it is time to awake, rise from the darkness and quench the thirst which has left you staving for so long.

From the main menu screen selecting Play will give you the options of Online Play, Private Game or Host Dedicated Server. Online Play allows you to join an online realm, Private Game allows you to host your own world where you are able to invite others to play with you or Host Dedicated Server where you can rent or host your own server. I decided to create a Private Game and there are two options on offer to you, PvE (Player versus Environment) or PvP (Player versus Player), I chose PvE option after which there are a bunch of settings you can set for your server but I left them as is as it is my first-time playing V Rising and wanted to play the game in standard format.

After deciding where you want to play it is time for you to create your character, you have the options to choose Skin Tone, Face, Eye and Hair Colour, Hair Style, Features, Accessories, Name and Gender (Male and Female). If you can’t decide any of these options there is a randomising button for character creation and for the naming of your character.

Once you’ve done creating your character the game will begin, you will arise from your coffin into a dark and gloomy place which has been your tomb for centuries. Here you will go over some of the basics of the game as you make your way to the lands which were once yours. Upon reaching the outside world you will start receiving quests to complete which you’ll have to complete in order for you to move forward. These quests are simple to begin, collecting bones to create a Bone Sword, they soon become a bit more difficult as you will need to have reached a certain gear level so that you’re able to perform a necessary action.

You will be required to create some weapons and armour, these will not only protect you but are required for the collection of resources. The types of weapons you can have are Swords, Axes, Maces these weapons are also used for the collection of resources. You can use either weapon but using the correct weapon for the job will give you a few more resources. Swords can be used to collect plant fibers; Axes have greater effect again wood and Maces are better against rock and minerals. There are other weapons you will come across throughout the game Spears, Crossbows, Slashers and Reapers (Scythes). Each weapon has their own benefits and will come will their own abilities giving you plenty of options for your game play.

With these new weapons and having collected the necessary resources you will complete the required quests. This will then unlock the quest Blueprint: Castle Heart and Borders, this will then allow you to put down roots somewhere and build your own castle. The Castle Heart is the centre of what will become your base of operations, if the Castle Heart is destroyed then your castle will also be destroyed. This isn’t a problem when playing solo but on other servers you may have to deal with raiders who’ll want to take what’s yours and destroy everything that you’ve created, on the other hand you can also raider other vampire castles. I’m happy playing solo for the time being, I want to play the game and build my castle without the hassle of wondering when I’m going to get my botty spanked and have my stuff liberated.

Placing the Castle Heart down somewhere you will build out from that point, to do that you have to place Borders down extending out from the Castle Heart. These borders are square tiles, each requiring a number of resources for them to be placed upon the ground. You may have to clear an area from trees, rocks and other obstacles like ruins all depending on where about you choose to build your castle. Ruins are a great source of stone and can be collected quicker than from the boulders scattered around, however your first venture into building your castle will be made out of wood. This will provide you some protection and somewhere that you can place your coffin once you are able to craft one. The wooden walls can be upgraded to stone ones once you’re able to create stone bricks which doesn’t take too long.

In V Rising your character does not gain levels through experience points but rather through Gear Level. Getting better weapons, armour and accessories will increase your Gear Level. You can gain new gear through crafting if you have the right recipes and the right crafting tables such as the Smithy will allow you to create Iron weapons. Recipes can be found in books which can be unlocked at the Research or the Study tables once you have unlocked them. The books can be found throughout the world, dropped by enemies, found in chests and even found while fishing. Some recipes though can only be achieved by defeating a V Blood Boss, defeating a Boss can also unlock new technologies and abilities and are a must if you want to progress.

There are thirty-seven bosses in V Rising and while you can find them as you wander around the world the easiest way is to craft a Blood Alter. This will allow you to select a boss (if you’re strong enough) and track their position through the blood scent each boss gives off indicating the direction in which they can be found. Some bosses move from one destination to another while others stay in one place. Selecting a boss at the blood alter will give you details on what rewards you will gain upon defeating that boss. Each boss has a level and those which are too strong for you at your current gear level will remain greyed out, however you can always try your luck at a higher-level boss at any time if you think your tough enough.

To help you fight against the humans and the bosses you have a range of weapons, each has their benefits and abilities but you also gain magical abilities from defeating the bosses. There are several categories of magical abilities Blood, Unholy, Illusion, Chaos and Frost. There are four slots in which you can add an ability to, one slot for Travel Ability, two slots for Basic Ability and the final slot for the Ultimate Ability. Along with your weapons and their abilities will hopefully overcome the hurdles which await you out in the realm of the humans, although some trial and error may take place until you get the right set up in dealing with the enemy.
