An all around great game with fantastic desing about a tiny crab and a disproportionately big message concerning our planet

Another Crab's Treasure tells the story of a suddenly homeless hermit crab and his long, cruel journey through the ocean to retrieve his beloved mollusc shell that is worth way too much to the local authorities. As a game of the Soulslike-Genre, the player is put in the role of this unfortunate soul and joins him on the journey of true self-discovery.

The story is being told in a linear way but still leaves space to complete some quests in an unintended (?) sequence, like i did without realising at first. Until now, there is no other game mode, so after completing the story the player is left with the restart button as the only option.

I never played a Soulslike-Game before but got used to the gameplay really quickly. The combat system gets deeper in line with the progress and fortunately reaches a point where it's deep enough to offer a diversified experience. The movement feels mostly smooth, sluggish in only few scenarios. There are little to no bugs that i encountered throughout my playthrough.

The design of the game is one of its Unique Selling Propositions. Much valuable effort went into the creation of all the numerous characters and opponents, regularly offering occasions to smile, laugh and ponder about. Other than that, players get to experience different regions of the ocean in an intriguing art style and with many details. It's easy to notice that the developers put a lot of love into this aspect of the game, which adds much to the overall experience. I deemed it very impressive that they managed to design areas, for example marine garbage dumps and the sinister deep-sea, generally considered as hideous or uncomfortable, in a way that still feels intriguing to explore, leaving the player both shocked and fascinated at the same time.

The atmosphere is overall fitting and well-made by the interplay of the audio, visual pattern, gameplay and storytelling. The latter doesn't seem very deep at first, but gains a lot of profundity the farther it develops. From the beginning on, an inevitable message is being hinted at: The life of the little sea creatures is much more vivid and scintillating than most of us would think, but sadly humanity does its best to ruin all of it, along with vast regions of the planet, just by embracing the abysmal waste culture. Players become witness of how the inhabitants of the sea, unaware of their pitiful fate, are welcoming this unknown change of events and interpret it as something precious, while at the same time the first noxious effects of the pollution begin to occur.

There are only few things that i would allow myself to criticize:

  • The soundtrack fulfills its purpose for scenic accompainment and adds a lot to the atmosphere. But, speaking for myself, i couldn't really identify a pattern or theme that would connect all the tracks. Some of them feel to run a bit off the road, which doesn't need to be something bad.
What in gods name is this

  • When in combat, changing the perspective to a new target sometimes turned out to be tricky, as for doing so, the game will always choose the enemy being closest to the middle of the screen and not calculate between the viewing angle and the distance between each enemy and the player. But maybe that's on me as i played with mouse and keyboard.

  • The ending of the story feels a bit ... weird. Players are left with many open questions and a general feeling of unfulfillment, as the game's end doesn't really finish the inquiries which arose thoughout the story. The ending screen, however, is very emotional and worth commending!

  • My biggest critique: What i like most about the game is the normative message concerning ocean pollution being sent. However, in my opinion, it's really sad that the developers didn't choose to address a broader audience. Just eschew the overly explicit emphasis on violence and cut the unnecessary, edgy sexual innuendos ... There really is not that much to change to make the game child-friendly and thus impart the important morale of this story to younger players as well.

  • The game could be harder. For some reason there are copious options to make it easier - why not also go the other way?

As the developers announced a free update being around the corner, some of these points can be expected to become superfluos.

All in all a very good game, would play it again!

This game does so many things perfectly and leaves you wanting more! Here is why:

En Garde! offers an authentic experience of the good old swashbuckling comedies and brings fresh air to a setting which didn't receive much attention during the last years.

Each of the four adventure episodes is a gem of storytelling and game design done by a small yet talented developer studio. The arena mode provides a lot of the else much needed replayability by setting up various more or less randomly created combat scenarios.

The gameplay feels smooth (apart from very few pathing issues) and doesn't need much to get used to. For me as a melee game enjoyer the combat system could be deeper, but together with the other gameplay elements it is enough for creating a well-rounded experience of both funny and challenging moments. The bugs i experienced were in such little extend that they didn't impact the experience in any significant way.

En Garde! looks visually appealing and invites you to stop by to enjoy the scenery. I really like the art style and think it adds a lot to the overall enjoyment. Warm, bright colours and lovely designs create a romantic atmosphere of the early 17th century Spain. The background and objects in the distance are displayed in the style of watercolor until you get close and they become the new location of interest - an awesome trick to save GPU and make the game look nice at the same time.

The whole audio part is 10/10. The spirit of the swashbuckler setting has been caught on point with the game soundtrack. It creates an authentic feeling of hispanic rhythm and has both epic combat and relaxing background tracks in it. In fact i regularly listen to it in my freetime. Go and buy it now, then return to reading this review with the track Curtain Call in the background! Apart from that the voice acting has been done with much passion and the banter system will invigorate the fights with a wide range of random voicelines which actually fit to what is happening. The humor itself feels natural and genuiley makes you smile.

With all of that En Garde! leaves you with a somewhat strange feeling, because all of what you encountered was of such a quality that you think it would be suitable for a much bigger scaled game. In short: The quality of the game doesn't match the time you actually spend playing it. The arena mode is great, but sadly it doesn't let you change any parameters of the scenarios except the difficulty. There could have been so much more for this game; even for a potential multiplayer mode En Garde! already has a good fundament and wouldn't need that big of an overhaul.

If i could wish for anything and should name three things i want the most for En Garde!, it would be ...
  • more content in form of DLCs; i'm sure a big portion of the players feel the same and wouldn't mind paying for more, also the developers deserve this kind of monetary support
  • a Spanish synchronisation for an even more authentical experience
  • an autograph of El Vigilante

I know that two out of these three points sound ridiculous, but come on, i really want an autograph of El Vigilante! I would pay a lot! Honestly the best videogame character i had the honor to meet since a very long time ...

Lastly i want to mention that i hope the success of En Garde! will encourage other developers to create more games around the swashbuckler action of the 16th and 17th century. This has to be one of the most underrated settings i can think of. Thank you Fireplace Games for your gorgeous creation! :)

This is a very good game. The concept is innovative; the gameplay is fun and tense; the developers seem to be capable of keeping it alive for a while.

Was fun while it lasted.

Very good idea, fun mechanics, horrible developers, super small playerbase.

New and interesting ways of playing. Game does most of the work for you, for example aiming.

Gameplay not complex enough and skill ceiling too low for a competitive environment.

Outplaying your opponents does not feel satisfying because the techniques are too simple.

Not even talking about the style of the game and the look of the characters.

Terrible servers and other problems (for example the catching not working) create an unplayable experience for a solid amount of time.

Community ranges from very lovely and great individuals that will become your friends to the most degenerate people you will meet in your life.

Since the game went free-to-play, the game only recycles old content.

Different developers could have made it much better.

All in all happy to have played this game, but there is no more motivation to dedicate time to it.

The Soundtrack of the Napoleonic Wars DLC is really great.

Nowadays you won't find a game with such a simple but at the same time competitive combat system.

Great tools for clans, custom servers and community events (and also modifications if you like that).

One of the healthiest competitive scenes i have ever witnessed, still going in 2022. Tournaments are well organised and fun.

Most of the players are guys between 15 and 30 who are interested in history, and that's great between it leads to a common ground.

Sadly the successor Bannerlord is not a viable alternative to Warband.
