The DLC itself is story heavy but the majority of that story is going to take place outside your save game that you've spent multitudes of hours on. The missions you go on are points in history from the X-Series but give no explanation where in the storyline they fall so someone who doesn't know the lore would be lost. Will a new player know the significance of playing as Gunne? Will they know the story behind the fight with the Kha'ak? Do even returning players know some of the backstory?

The missions you have no control over what ships you have or how they are configured and sometimes you have limited functionality on what the ship can do. To proceed in the story you have to get an average of 2 stars on the missions in a Graph(Chapter) to get the final mission for that Graph. Finishing these missions will result in unlocks in the Open Universe(your main saves).

The issue with these missions is you are required to do them to get the unlocks. If you are unable to complete the missions then you have no way to access these items in your pre-existing saves. Effectively putting all the DLC unlocks behind a skill check. These skill checks are also tied to achievements, something Egosoft has never done before.

In the missions Egosoft brought back racing. They put a race track in the Open Universe but it has no racing associated with. So if you want to do any racing you have to use the ship they gave you without being able to modify it. A missed opportunity if you ask me.

If you do manage to finish the story of the DLC, then what you get is extremely lackluster.
7 S Ships
2 M Ships
2 L Ships
7 Sectors
A faction with a new way of trading, barter. (As of writing this barter appears to be broke as I have not received any new barter options. There also doesn't appear to be a way to automate barter because you have to com your ship to transfer wares when it's in space. This also means no ship production in their space. Three of those unlocked sectors belong to them.)

The ships themselves are a mixed bag.
4 Are limited racers, so you can only have 1 each of them.
1 Is limited but is a combat ship
3 Are just one time finds, no way to research and build them again
The rest are combat ships where once you get them you can research how to make more of them.

(Now this part is subjective but to me only a few of those are worthwhile and most require you to finish Graph 6 or Graph 6 missions. The whole DLC is 6 Graphs long so you have to beat or nearly beat the DLC to get them.)

120 Agility and Astrology provide enough boosters to sell the expansion on their own.
Even on top of those you get tons of amazing items that are useful throughout the game no matter which expansions you own or which game mode / play style you choose to use.

Worth it for Ancient Relics game mode alone.

Cartography is a staple skill/combat booster much like Agility.
Archaeology provides large amounts of useful consumables and other general upgrades to combat and skills.

Barriers are confusing to get your head around at first but provide incentive to use summoning more. As a reward you get BiS gems, and other amazing combat items that are useful even in Throne of Herald expansion.

Unholy prayers used to be very broken, and still are to a certain extent. Even with the new Into the Abyss expansion you can still use your unholy prayer combat items from barrier dungeons to deal incredible damage to the enemies.

Expansion is good. It adds skill trees and other misc items that are of benefit to the base game and other expansions.
Skills are slow at first because it's effectively level 99->100 progression but they speed up once you get into the expansion, allocate skill points towards increased XP gain, and gain items/mastery. The more work you do before you go into the expansion will pay off as a lot of the items and buffs will help in small ways.

As mentioned in the store page, you must beat the base game boss to enter the Abyss.

If you load an outdated mod your game may break in unexpected ways. There is a huge disclaimer at the top of the page telling people this but they still load them and get the NaN error. Despite it not being a base game issue, the developer provided a way to fix the issue.

Game has flaws but is good.

Bad:
Voice Acting - You'll see.
Extraction shooter - Although the genre itself can be fun it's not highly publicized that there are penalties to dying in the game. Operatives(other than the Main Character) can be lost if they die. Equipment not insured can be lost if the person wearing it dies on map. Hours of work put into scavenging loot can be lost if the character dies or the core tower is destroyed during Recovery day. There are no visible backup saves accessible from in game. You have to do file copying/renaming from the backup files the game makes. The devs have gradually cut back penalties that are not widely regarded and I expect this to eventually be cut back some also.
Resource gathering - You have to scavenge maps for random loot or roll the shop and hope to get what you need. I put this as a flaw as the game itself is more advertised as FPS / Base Defense. The devs have improved looting and there are plans to fix the shop issues but right now it's still a mixed bag.
Performance - Multiplayer isn't in a great state with bigger bases and lots of things going on at once.

Good:
Devs - Devs listen to feedback and push out lots of patches to fix issues. I've personally seen many items I've reported get fixes quickly on top of other things I didn't even know were an issue. It's even easier for new players to get into the game now due to many QoL devs added to starting outpost.
Many different ways to play - Although Hellfires may be current endgame and meta(letting the base fight for you), you can also place down many deployable structures, construct mini robot(guardians) armies, fight in a mech, or fight on foot.
Multiplayer - Yes performance can be bad, but having multiple people with different jobs really makes the game. One person in command mode with a birds eye view controlling structures while other people run ammo and fight on the front lines.
Visuals - Seeing hordes of enemies being mowed down by constant gunfire is very satisfying. The turrets just spew shell casings, artillery gives satisfying THUMPS. I typically turn off screen shake but the artillery really sells it for me here.

As with most games, it's not for everyone. Go watch a video or stream. Talk to people. Make informed buying decisions.

I finished everything it had to offer in around 140 hours. There may be flaws but I consider it a fun game for a driving sim.

___

First thing's first. This isn't Snowrunner or Snowrunner 2. This game's premise is a wide open map where you make your own path from point A to point B instead of sticking to roads going from point A to point B. There is no cargo hauling in the same vein as Snowrunner. You can get inventory items and pick up/deliver those but there isn't a risk of losing those items. I feel like I have to say this as there will be a large audience from the previous games.

The game isn't perfect. There are UI/UX decisions that make you scratch your head. There are bugs but nothing major that make you crash to desktop, just minor annoyances that you can work around. If you've tried Snowrunner's multiplayer then you should be familiar with working around minor annoyances.

There is a limited selection of vehicles compared to the previous games. This makes sense as a large portion of the previous games' vehicles were designed with hauling cargo, not rugged terrain. The vehicles that do make it in are old familiars and a few new vehicles. The old vehicles have been changed in how they handle from the previous games. All vehicles now have extra parts so you can store fuel and spare parts. The items actually add crash protection.

Expeditions are the regional missions of this game. Don't get confused and think you have to do them to unlock Free Roam and have freedom to do whatever you want. There is no system that forces you to complete the mission you select. You can take the payment then go do whatever you want, you just won't receive a prepayment again. There is also no system in place that forces you back to the mission select after you finish your Expedition. You're free to keep driving around.

Outposts, gateways, and maps are locked behind Expeditions. Certain tasks and contracts are also locked behind Expeditions. This is the same system as Snowrunner but put in different packaging. You may bounce off it and not like how it's packaged, but should recognize it's a very similar progression path. Many of your upgrades are now locked behind doing Contracts and Tasks. Gone are the days of only getting upgrades off the map and ignoring the optional stuff when it only rewarded money.

Minigames are extremely hit and miss. Taking pictures provides a nice screenshot worthy view in most cases while Sonar missions will make you scream in frustration as you try to find items and don't even know what you're looking for. Quick time events to examine areas are also frustrating . The only other minigame would be flying a drone around from a top down view and having it hover over circles. It's inconsistent in the size of the circles across the game and the handling on the drone is horrible.

Rock crawling is extremely fun and you can make some interesting paths by repelling down a cliff side.

I could probably some up the above better but it should at least give you a better picture of the game. I recognize most people won't read this or this far. Thank you if you did. I hope if you do pick up this game you have fun.

Palworld haters are review bombing this game. Please do your own research before coming to a conclusion.
There are different development teams working on the different games.
This game has received major updates with the most recent being in December.

June: Major game overhaul
August: New tech tier
September: Map functions
Mid December: New Biome

---

The developers are actively working on the game and I'm happy with a lot of the changes they've made. The technology unlocks feel a lot more smoother and a lot of the map changes I wanted to see after that were added in fairly quickly.

First run done with lots of note taking.
Very satisfying watching your stock of books grow as you expand the house and learn about it's history.

At the beginning you can see some pretty fast upgrades. But then it gets to the point where it takes weeks, even months to progress. You could let your game gain "offline" progression but it will never be as rewarding as online while the weeks to months progression refers to online progress. If you decide to do online progress the game is highly un-optimized and takes up WAY too many resources.

The Big Bang system, aka rebirth/ascension, only takes into account how far you've got past your previous progression. So yeah you can rebirth and change the boosts you get to speed up certain aspects of your game. If you do try to progress you're still going to be waiting weeks/months to get back to where you were with the time you "saved" getting back to that point feeling empty due to the extreme grind.
