Silent Hill 2 (2024)
Memory frights the colours of my mind

The Silent Hill 2 remake delivers an immersive, spine-tingling experience that not only honors the 2001 classic but enhances it in ways that make it essential for both longtime fans and newcomers to the series. Developed by Blooper Team, this remake captures the unsettling atmosphere and psychological horror that made the original a masterclass in suspense while adding modern technical advancements and gameplay refinements.

Pros:
1. Graphical and Audio Upgrades
The remake’s visuals are nothing short of breathtaking. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the graphics enhance Silent Hill ’s fog-drenched environments, with photorealistic character models, stunning lighting, and richly detailed textures. Fog and shadows are used brilliantly, making you feel genuinely trapped in a haunted, living town. The audio has also been modernised, with Akira Yamaoka's iconic soundtrack remastered, giving it an atmospheric punch that complements the game's eerie world.

2. Enhanced Character Depth and Storytelling
Silent Hill 2's storyline was already a benchmark for psychological horror, and the remake has done a fantastic job expanding on it without detracting from the original’s emotional weight. Voice acting, motion capture, and subtle tweaks in dialogue and character interactions add layers of depth. James Sunderland’s character feels more human, making his journey through grief, guilt, and fear even more relatable and compelling.

3. Improved Combat and Exploration Mechanics
The original is sometimes critiqued for its clunky controls, combat and dutch camera angles by modern audiences, and the remake aims to address this by introducing a smoother, more intuitive style of combat and movement. The controls are responsive and enhance immersion, making the gameplay flow better and exploration more satisfying. The camera system has been overhauled to provide a more cinematic, close-up experience while avoiding disorienting angles. Encounters with creatures like Pyramid Head and the Lying Figures feel visceral and terrifying due to the improved mechanics.

4. Faithful to the Original's Atmosphere
The remake understands that the real horror of Silent Hill is in the details. Whether it’s the ambient sounds, unsettling silence, or disturbing visuals, Blooper Team keeps true to the haunting, oppressive atmosphere. The fog, abandoned buildings, and grotesque creatures all contribute to a palpable sense of dread that keeps players on edge without over-relying on jump scares.

5. Replay value with Enhanced Endings
With updated visuals and new animations, the multiple endings offer new perspectives and subtle narrative shifts. This keeps players invested and offers fresh incentives to replay the game to experience every twist and turn. Easter eggs and new hidden items in certain locations also encourage exploration and reward meticulous players with additional lore.

Cons:
1. High System Demands
The Unreal Engine 5 graphics look stunning but come at a cost. Players with older hardware might experience performance drops, especially in high-fidelity settings. On consoles, though optimised, occasional frame dips can be noticed in intense foggy areas.

2. Pacing Adjustments May Not Appeal to Everyone
Some fans might feel that certain pacing tweaks in the remake reduce the slow-burn tension of the original. While these changes streamline exploration for modern audiences, they can make sections feel slightly faster, which could disappoint players who loved the deliberate pacing of the classic. In other areas, like the puzzles, have been expanded on significantly which could lead longtime fans and newcomers alike believing that the game is deliberately lengthening its running time but the puzzles are so much more detailed and satisfying to solve this time around.

3. Familiarity May Impact the Surprise Factor for Veterans
Although the remake stays faithful to the original, this means that returning players may anticipate scares and narrative twists. The remake does add some new elements, but those deeply familiar with the original might find fewer surprises than they hoped. Some veterans may also be surprised at the significant amount of combat the player will have to experience in order to get through this story. While many enemies can be run past and avoided, there are situations in the game where combat is unavoidable so temper your expectations.

Final Verdict
For me personally, this Silent Hill 2 remake is a triumph and my personal GOTY for 2024, beautifully blending nostalgia with modern innovation. Blooper Team’s remake has set a new standard for psychological horror remakes, showcasing that a faithful recreation can still feel fresh and exhilarating not to mention completely anxiety-inducing (the new Toluca Prison section is going to shred even the hardest of nerves). This remake doesn’t just rely on high-definition graphics; it revitalises the emotional core of Silent Hill 2 while amplifying its horror and immersiveness for a new generation. For fans and newcomers alike, Silent Hill 2 (2024) is a haunting, unforgettable experience that cements itself as a new horror classic that sits comfortably alongside the original.

One word or phrase to sum up the experience
Anxiety-inducing and nerve-wracking

Astergios: Curse of the Stars
Curse of the bland and repetitive

Astergios: Curse of the Stars has its moments but falls short. Boring story with way too much repetition and quest log that is way too convoluted for its own good. While the game brings some enjoyable elements to the table, it is ultimately hindered by repetitive gameplay and a really lackluster narrative.

Pros:

Decent Visuals: The world is visually appealing, with detailed environments and a vibrant color palette that captures the mythical Greek environments. However, visually it's no Immortals : Fenyx Rising but then it wouldn't be fair to compare an indie game's graphics with that of a AAA budgeted game.

Decent Combat System: "Souls-lite" combat that offers a range of weapon styles and abilities, allowing for some variety in playstyles. The mix of melee, ranged, and magic keeps things interesting for a while.

Mediocre Exploration: The open areas are fun to explore initially, with some hidden paths and secrets that reward players who like to search every corner but convoluted quest design and no workable map makes later quests a slog to get too.

Cons:

Repetitive Combat: Despite the initial excitement, combat quickly becomes repetitive with limited enemy variety and uninspired boss fights that rely more on frustrating mechanics than skillful play.

Weak Storyline: The plot lacks depth and engaging characters. It feels like a missed opportunity to really immerse players in the game's mythological setting. I really didn't care for the outspoken protagonist who uses modern language and jargon that irritates more than it delights.

Clunky Controls: The controls can be unresponsive at times, making combat feel less fluid and causing unnecessary difficulty during fast-paced battles.

Overall, Astergios: Curse of the Stars is a decent, but flawed, action-RPG. While it offers some enjoyable exploration and visuals, its repetitive gameplay and underwhelming story prevent it from standing out.

Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree
No Shadow of a Slouch for this former beauty Queen

Look I have been on the FromSoftware fanboy tour since the original Demons' Souls came out on the PS3 all those years ago but Shadow of the Erdtree has been the most enjoyable DLC FromSoftware has ever released more than offering the 16-20 hours previous games DLC has offered.  This DLC is more like an entirely new game than an expansion. I poured more than 150 hours into it. While a lot of it is a joy to experience (exploration is stunning in this one from its verticality and gorgeous world and art design), combat varies wildly, from manageable to downright difficult. But then Shadow of the Erdtree is end game content that really should only be attempted after clearing the base game as it swings from left to right like a blood soaked pendulum.

As much as I love this DLC from a level design and art direction and boss standpoint, and the experience of it will forever be etched in my mind (pretty much like the base game), I can see why some people simply got very frustrated and irritated with it. The new levelling system isn't made very clear to the player from the get go, so those coming in and expecting the traditional level system from the base game, even though that system is still implemented here and very much in place since you will often get valuable runes from many of the games elite enemies and stronger foes, the problem now is that the player can no longer power level past some of this DLC's late game challenges without diving deep into the games meta game and having to rely on trusted old builds even if that is what you never intended your character.

Past FromSoft titles, you could meet an insurmountable challenge by slowly and gradually overcoming it through levelling up your desired damage output stat (alongside upgrading health and stamina of course) which means you could eventually skimp past a boss (if getting good was simply not in your wheelhouse with those extra little levels to strength/dexterity and vigour/endurance). To an extent this holds true in the base game until you hit the end game (which is horrendously unbalanced), Shadow of the Erdtree does feel like an extension of the base game's difficulty. While you can still get some benefit from vigour and endurance upgrades, unfortunately your damage stat upgrades will make little to no difference so levelling past a boss is becoming an increasingly rare occurrence with the new levelling system they have implemented here (Scadutree and Revered Spirit Ashes Blessings), forcing you to quickly adapt your play-style or spend many moons "getting gud" all over again.

Now I don't have a problem with this system as I enjoy exploring a games world, looking into the games every nook and cranny but for those players who are simply just trying to get through it, they are going to hit a brick wall. I did a lot of exploring so I found most of them but if you are not the kind of player who likes to explore every nook and cranny then you most likely will have an increasingly tough time since a lot of the later bosses use punishing AOE spells or abilities and are hyper aggressive leaving very little room for error. These bosses now also employ endless combos that don't give the player anytime to reapply a buff or a heal so be prepared to die a lot.

Ashes of war, which the base game introduced to help usher along inexperienced players, are now so difficult to summon upon entering a boss arena because the bosses no longer give you any time to call them in before the boss has knocked you out of the summon animation and taken 2/3's of your health along with it. I can see newbies to the formula crying in anguish wondering why they can make no headway. These new bosses also tend to read inputs and deploy tactics based on this making them highly unpredictable to fight.

If the player is not out exploring the world for Scadutree and Revered Spirit Blessings that are this games damage output and damage negation currency for both the player and his/her Ash of War summons, then I can see how some players may reach Consort Radahn (totally under-levelled with a Sadacutree Blessing level of 10 when he requires 18-20) and don't have a hope in hell of defeating him outside of summoning in a player with high skill and reflex checks.

Having said that, you can finally retire Mimic as the DLC now offers an assortment of new Ashes like the Horned Warrior or Jolan and Anna, who when upgraded to max level can solo Maleania: Blade of Miquella in the base game. I had a fantastic time playing this DLC. I loved everything from the world, to the new bosses and lore that accompanies them. It saddens me to see so many players leaving negative reviews because of the game's difficulty.

Beautiful but very difficult

What have you done, Father?
The devil is in the details

What do hunky priests, femme fatales, split-personalities, creepy rectories, some man-on-man action and murder all have in common? Well if you guessed "not much" then you haven't played What have you done, Father? a psychological thriller in the mould of Final Analysis, that sexy pot-boiler from the nineties starring Richard Gere and Kim Basinger, except this time set in an old rectory where forbidden dark yearnings are about to bubble up to the surface and and over into madness and murder.

Players will assume the role of Father Mathias Marton, an Abercrombie & Fitch lookalike model who has found God while a good portion of his regular Sunday flock , including other priests in the parish , would rather find themselves with him inside them. After taking a late night call from the attractive and stylish Maria Constanza, a member of his church who doesn't seem to be too interested in worshipping God, as she asks him to help her with a personal issue. Turns out she is also the wife of the local mob boss. Clearly no good can come from this?

The less you know about the story going in the better because it does have its fair share of twists and turns (although granted they certainly are not going to floor you) where our Father Mathias finds himself ensnared in a web of forbidden desires that will eventually spill over in a cycle of madness, murder and mayhem. Is Father Mathias mind simply playing tricks on him and he has conjured up this series of unfortunate events or is this the work of Deacon Josiah - another young priest with a troubled mind who was recently sent to the rectory by the Church's Bishop and whose flame burns a little too high for Father Mathias. Or does this murder tie back to the Maria's husband? Original sin is not so original after all.

What have you done, Father? is a short narrative horror/murder mystery that blends investigation with cinematics, light puzzles and dialog trees. Made by one of the developers of Last Days of Lazarus - another narrative adventure game with a heavy Gothic vibe, a game I have yet to play but currently sits with an 88% user rating. Taken at face values, these guys seems to know what they are doing.

For the most part the game looks good, with stock Unreal 4 assets and character models being used. While the dialog is a bit clunky and the voice acting can be a bit hit or miss (clearly English is not the developers first language), it more than makes up for it in atmosphere, plot, brutality and sex. Considering the game was made entirely by one person, it's a commendable achievement.

If you like your murder mysteries with a dash of horror and a serpentine plot filled with sex, sin and hot priests then you may find much to enjoy here. The game's narrative does come apart towards the end as we are rushed to the game's forgone conclusion (it's a pity there weren't branching endings), but it's a fairly quick and easy game to get through. I clocked in at 3.5 hours with all 10 chapters completed and 100% of the achievements achieved.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series

Delightful remake of the first two Klonoa games, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (from the PlayStation 1 era) and its sequel Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil - which is still one of the PlayStation 2's most highly rated games with a Metacritic score of 94 at launch. I fondly remember playing both at the time so I was delighted that Namco's furry mascot was getting a new lease on life on all modern platforms for his 25th anniversary.

What surprised me the most about both games was how well they both hold up considering they came out between 1997 and 2001. Platformers have seen a creative renaissance over the intervening years thanks to the budding indie scene, so it was surprising to see both hold up so well against the more modern games in the genre.

To say both games in the collection have aged beautifully is an understatement and this is only amplified by the loving restoration done by Monkeycraft on these lost platforming relics so that hopefully an entire new generation can discover them. If sales are buoyant enough, hopefully then there is the possibility we see a third mainline entry into the series. Simple yet delightful to play, Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is gorgeous visually, oozes charm, has clever level design that often allows the player to approach it from various angles, and is a winner for fans of the genre. Recommended.

Tactical misstep

Tactical RPG that lacks depth. Your hero and party move along a board-based grid system automatically attacking enemies and objects as they approach. For a tactical RPG, I found the gameplay far too simple and repetitive and the unimpressive graphics failed to sustain my interest further. Its low price tag should entice some but there just isn't enough meat on this games bones to attract lovers of the genre.

Borealis
Spacedot

A very simple time killer with generated music. You assume the role of a white dot in space and have to carefully manoeuvre your way around a series of comets and meteors without getting hit or its game over. This is the sort of game you would have played on your ATARI 400 back in the day so don't expect detailed graphics or complex game mechanics. Game comes with three modes (survival, time challenge, endless) but I found it too simple and boring to sustain much interest. I guess if you are looking for something zen-like or perhaps a palate cleanser between other games you could try this one but in all honesty there are far better zen games out there to be spending your hard earned dollar and time on.

The Chant
Align those chakras

Cosmic horror, spirituality and new age philosophy meet in the new survival horror / action adventure game The Chant from fledgling studio Brass Token that sees a young woman attend a spiritual retreat in the hopes it will help her deal with her tormented past. This peaceful weekend soon turns to dread after a group chant opens up a portal to a psychedelic dimension of terror known as "The Gloom" that feeds on negative energy. Are you ready to balance your chakras in order to save yourself and the retreats inhabitants?

The Chant is an enjoyable but flawed experience. Dated graphics and some subpar writing are matched by a pulpy and enjoyable plot that moves at brisk and thrilling pace combined with some truly unique and grotesque enemy designs. Combat is serviceable, if a little clunky, but The Chant has promise thanks to 3 different weapon types with different attacks each matching a particular enemy health bar so you will need to switch in and out depending on the different enemies on the screen at once which adds a nice dynamic feel to the combat. As a first game from Brass Token, it's most certainly a step in the right direction.

I had an enjoyable time with the game. In the end I found that despite the many rough edges, it delivered a solid survival horror/action adventure romp and is definitely something I would recommend be played by aficionados of the genre. It exudes great atmosphere, despite the AA level graphics, it has a moody and engaging soundtrack, and while I would be hesitant to call it scary, the various enemies the player must face off with are mostly fun to engage with.

Enjoyable survival horror that is the ideal game to introduce newcomers to the genre

Little Orpheus
Tall tales

Little Orpheus, a former Apple Arcade exclusive, finally makes its way over to PC with mixed results. While the game is visually striking and for the most part looks gorgeous, you can immediately see how its hampered by originally being an exclusive game to mobile devices as Little Orpheus provides very little platforming and puzzle solving challenge (the puzzles in particular are incredibly weak and don't require any brain power to solve). This was no doubt hampered by the original mobile device touch controls.

With a wacky narrative that includes dinosaurs, flying mechanical fish, the innards of a whale, Little Orpheus goes out of its way to be quirky but with mixed results. While I enjoyed seeing what crazy scenario the game would throw me into next, sadly it fizzles out towards the end with a very anti-climatic ending that feels abrupt and doesn't give the story a satisfying conclusion . The game is also incredibly short featuring nine episodes that last 30 min each. Towards the end of the game (particularly episode 8), I experienced a lot of glitches and bugs which forced me to have to shut the game down and restart in order to resolve.

Ultimately Little Orpheus ends up being a mixed bag and proves yet again that games can't skate along on good looks alone, their needs to be something of substance there to hook players, and sadly this is where Little Orpheus falls flat. Recommended but only when on a sale.

Boo Bunny Plague
Down a cringe-inducing rabbit hole

In brief glimmers, I guess the best I can say about Boo Bunny Plague's is that it had some potential to be an interesting and unique experience combining beat-em-up gameplay mechanics with comedy and musical elements (yes there is a series of terrible musical interludes the player must endure), but unfortunately none of what it presents to the player gels cohesively. The game's concept of a bunny seeking revenge in a post-apocalyptic world set as a comedy-musical could have been intriguing (in the right hands), but the execution here is so flawed and all over the place. It's bare-bones basic and ends up representing more of a students group submission project for their game-making course than an actual polished enjoyable retail game.

Pros:

- None

Cons:

- Unrefined Gameplay Mechanics: Despite its creative premise, Boo Bunny Plague suffers from unpolished and clunky gameplay mechanics. Controls are awkward, making basic movements and combat a frustrating experience. The lack of responsiveness diminishes any potential enjoyment.

- Outdated Graphics: Even for its time the game's visuals are notably outdated, lacking the polish and detail expected in contemporary titles. Environments are repetitive, character models lack depth, and overall, the graphics fail to capture the player's attention or immerse them in the game world.

- Poor Storytelling: While the concept holds promise, the execution of the narrative is terrible. The plot is so basic and unrefined that it fails to engage players.

- Humorous Elements: Boo Bunny Plague's humour thinks that being crass and loud is funny. It's clear that some inspiration was taken from Gearbox's Borderlands series with regards to humour but nothing here is funny. Boo Bunny Plague is that annoying kid at school who is loud and obnoxious and thinks that every word that comes out of his/her mouth is hysterical when the reality is that they don't have a single funny bone in their entire body.

In conclusion, Boo Bunny Plague falls short of its potential due to a combination of unrefined gameplay mechanics, outdated graphics, poor storytelling, horrendous humour with super annoying characters. Quite frankly, as a sane and intelligent adult human, there is nothing enjoyable here.

Annoying, a game that constantly thinks its funny when its not.
