If I had to describe Shadow of Chernobyl, I'd say it's an incredible mash-up of science fiction and horror.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl is loosely based on the movie of the same name (and the Roadside Picnic novels). The premise takes place during a second Chernobyl disaster that opens a strange zone over the area, This zone is populated with all sorts of unnatural phenomena. These consist of anomalies, various artifacts, and mutants of varying shapes and sizes.

The game is part RPG, FPS, and Horror. It's an open world design that does an incredible job of immersing the player in the game world. The music, the sound, the way A.I. interact with one another in the world. The painstakingly detailed levels that really give you that feeling of being trapped in a post-Soviet hell. The shooting mechanics are fairly solid for a game this old. I recommend playing on Master for the best experience. The higher the difficulty, the more damage received by the player and NPC's.

As for some gripes, I don't have many. The game can be notoriously buggy at points. Some NPC's will run in circles, or items glitching and clipping through walls. On lower difficulties, the combat is very poor, hence the need to play on Master.

Overall, Shadow of Chernobyl is an incredible game. It's deeply immersive and terrifying, while at the same time being a satisfying shooter and role-playing game. For the best experience, I highly recommend downloading the L.U.R.K. or Autumn Aurora 2 mods for it. It gives the game a Vanilla+ experience, with many quality of life additions.

Can't wait for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.
