📢 JOB ALERT | Research Assistant: Land Use, Ecosystems and Sustainable Transitions (SEI Latin America 🇨🇴) Support climate change, land use transitions and environmental policy research in Latin America. Based in Bogota, Colombia, you will contribute to projects on deforestation, nature-based solutions and socio-environmental justice. Key duties: • Conduct research and data collection for sustainability projects. • Apply GIS and remote sensing to assess land use change and ecosystem dynamics. • Assist in writing technical reports, policy briefs, and research publications. • Support stakeholder engagement, including Indigenous communities and policymakers. • Contribute to funding proposals for new research initiatives. 🇸🇪 Sweden must do more to prepare for cascading climate risks. SEI researchers Karina Barquet, Matilda Gunnarsson, Jung-Ching Kan and Marlon Vieira Passos have analysed how interconnected heatwaves, drought and flooding increasingly threaten municipalities – yet local authorities remain unprepared. Through the CrisAct and HydroHazards projects, the team has identified new ways to improve planning and mitigate these emerging risks. Key lessons include prioritizing critical infrastructure nodes, strengthening social equity considerations and embracing nature-based solutions where appropriate. Happy International School Meals Day! 🥦 Schools are more than places of learning - they are hubs for health, sustainability and social justice. By providing healthy meals and food education, we are setting children up for a better future. The #EUChildGuarantee aims to ensure every child has access to at least one nutritious school meal per day - but right now, only 14 out of 27 EU Member States have mentioned school meals in their National Action Plans.  💡 With #SchoolFood4Change, 2892 schools in 22 countries are now serving more sustainable and healthy meals, including increased portions of fruits and vegetables. With the work of SEI Tallinn, this includes 15 Estonian schools and eight kindergartens. 💰 Rising #ClimateRisks: What the US cuts mean for climate action globally Edward Carr, SEI US Centre Director, speaks to Carbon Brief. He noted how previous US administrations had begun to integrate climate sensitivities into a wide range of USAID projects. The United States' role in international climate finance has shifted dramatically over the past decade. Under the Biden administration, annual climate aid surged to $11 billion- accounting for over 8% of global climate finance in 2024. Now, sweeping cuts by the new administration put these funds in jeopardy, with USAID projects and a $4 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund on the chopping block. Carbon Brief’s analysis, reported by Josh Gabbatiss, highlights the consequences of these cuts, from weakened climate adaptation efforts in vulnerable countries to potential setbacks in the global $300 billion climate-finance goal. 🌍 EU legislation might loosen human rights and environmental protection "Mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) rules serve as a crucial tool for addressing the negative impacts of critical raw material supply chains, requiring large companies to identify and mitigate risks associated with their business activities,” said Maria-Therese Gustafsson, Associate Professor at Stockholm University and researcher in Mistra Geopolitics. “To contribute to a real improvement for people and the environment, an ambitious approach is needed for EU's regulation on human rights and environmental due diligence, both in the EU legislation and in Sweden's national transposition,” said Rasmus Kløcker Larsen, Senior Research Fellow and Team Lead at SEI. “Now, the EU is expected to roll back its requirements. This poses a great risk that the sustainability requirements will remain a paper tiger with no practical effect,” Rasmus continued. The authors outline 5️⃣ key messages critical to the EU decision. 🌍 By 2050, nearly 70% of the world's population will live in cities. The way we plan and shape these spaces today will define the future of billions. 🏙️ But who really shapes our cities? Who decides how we move, breathe and live in urban spaces? According to the latest figures from the The World Bank and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), 56% of the global population - about 4.4 billion people - reside in urban areas. This trend is accelerating, with an additional 2.2 billion people expected to live in cities by 2050. We talked to Steve Cinderby from SEI York, who unpacks how co-creating solutions with communities and policymakers can make cities more inclusive, climate-resilient and livable. "Cities are shaped by many voices - residents, businesses, local authorities , all with different agendas. Our job is to bring them together to build a shared vision for the future."
