Chandigarh: The city experienced its warmest Jan day on record this Thursday, with a maximum temperature of 25.9 degrees Celsius, seven degrees above normal. This is the highest Jan temperature recorded since the Chandigarh meteorological department began maintaining records in 2012.
Since 2012, the all-time highest maximum temperature recorded was 25.8 degrees Celsius on Jan 5, 2021. This record has now been breached. Last year, the highest maximum temperature was 22.4 degrees Celsius on Jan 30. In 2023, it was 25.6 degrees on Jan 24.
With the last few days witnessing sunny weather with no fog or rain, the maximum temperatures have remained on the higher side.
"Frequent western disturbances with no significant rainfall or snowfall resulted in a change in wind direction from the routine northwest to west and south-westerly, resulting in moisture incursion and warming. Fewer foggy days and windy conditions also led to an increase in temperatures," said Surender Paul, director of the city weather department, explaining the reasons for the warmest Jan day.
Meanwhile, the minimum temperature was 10.1 degrees, which is two degrees above normal. The temperatures are not likely to see any major shift over the next five days. Ahead, the next two days are likely to see a partly cloudy sky. However, at the start of the next month, on Feb 2, there is a forecast of thunder and light rain.
So far in Jan, 24.6mm of rainfall has been recorded, which is 32.2% less than normal. "Temperatures are expected to rise further in Feb. There will be warmer days and no harsh cold conditions now," said a weather department official.
