Tamil Nadu to reserve 2% engineering seats for sportspersons from next year

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu will reserve 2% seats in engineering counselling for sportspersons from next academic year (2025-26), higher education minister K Ponmudy announced here on Monday.
As of now, the state government reserves 500 seats for sports quota. But the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions committee receives more than 2,000 applications every year.
After starting the online counselling for special category students, Ponmudy said the reservation would help students excel in sports to join the professional colleges.
He also announced that the tuition fees would remain the same as last year.
There are 2,40,091 seats available in 433 engineering colleges. Of these seats, 1,79,938 seats will be available for counselling under the govt quota.
This year 2,00,005 students will take part in the engineering counselling that will be conducted till September 11.
Nine engineering colleges have been closed and have not taken part in the counselling.
