Drunk tourist rams car into two at Arpora, 1 dead

Calangute: In a hit-and-run accident at Arpora on early Sunday morning, one person was killed while a migrant fisherwoman walking along the road sustained serious injuries. The accident was so serious that the woman's feet were entangled in the front grille of the car and had to be extricated by fire service personnel. The woman is said to be in a serious condition.
The accident occurred at around 7.30am on Sunday when the tourist driver of the speeding SUV, who was allegedly intoxicated lost control of the vehicle, veered on to the wrong side of the Arpora-Nagoa road in front of Viegas supermarket and crashed into a two-wheeler, killing the rider, identified as Amirul Haque, on the spot.
The driver also mowed down a woman, identified as Sheela, 54, who was walking on the side of the road and going to Arpora market with a basket of fish. After knocking the woman, the car driver also knocked down an electricity pole which crashed into the field next to the road.
Amirul Haque, 44, the two-wheeler rider was on his way to deliver chicken from Saligao to a restaurant in Arpora when tragic accident occurred, police said.
The driver of the Margao-registered vehicle allegedly fled from the spot without providing medical assistance or notifying the police. He was later identified as Shubham Singhdeo, a tourist who had rented the vehicle from Mitesh Hadfadkar, police said.
Anjuna police said on Sunday evening they have registered an offence against the driver of the SUV who allegedly lost control and mowed down the two and also knocked down an electricity pole and also against Hadfadkar, the owner of the car. Further investigations are on.
Arpora-Nagoa sarpanch Roshan Redkar, who reached the spot within 15 minutes, said it's unfortunate that onlookers instead of helping extract the woman from the wreckage simply kept taking photos and videos. “Her legs were inside the front of the car and we could only remove her after the fire service personnel came,” he said.
